Straight Stairlift — Washington, DC

Straight Stairlift

The workhorse of DC wardmans, federal rowhouses, and 1920s Cleveland Park colonials.

More than 65% of the stairlifts we install in DC are straight rails. The rail bolts to your existing stair treads only — never into the wall, never into the plaster, never into the original banister on a pre-war wardman or federal rowhouse. Battery backup keeps you moving through a Pepco outage. Most DC straight-rail installs wrap in under four hours, and the slim-profile version fits the grandfathered narrow treads we see in pre-1900 Victorian rehabs across Shaw, Bloomingdale, Columbia Heights, Mount Pleasant, and Adams Morgan.

Starting at $3,250 installed

What's Included

  • Battery backup for power outages
  • Swivel seat with safety lock
  • Two wireless remote controls

Stairlift Service Across District of Columbia County

District of Columbia County, DC

From Capitol Hill federal rowhouses with their signature limestone front stoops to Georgetown federals where the Commission of Fine Arts reviews only exterior-visible work, from Dupont Circle and Logan Circle Victorian rehabs to the Shaw, Bloomingdale, Columbia Heights, H Street NE, Brookland, and Petworth wardmans — our crew has mapped DC's rowhouse staircase geometry. We know which Adams Morgan Victorians have original newel posts that cannot be touched, which Wesley Heights and Cleveland Park estates take a standard straight rail, and which Palisades craftsmans need a curved rail for tight U-turn landings. We also serve Bethesda, Silver Spring, Chevy Chase, Arlington, Alexandria, and Falls Church with the same crew and no handoff.

Capitol Hill federal rowhouse — straight rail on original oak treads

Capitol Hill, DC Installed March 2026

An 1893 federal on A Street NE inside the Capitol Hill Historic District. The family was concerned about HPRB review — but interior installs are unregulated, so no review was needed. The staircase is a standard 14-foot straight run from the ground-floor entry to the second-floor landing, with original mahogany treads maintained since construction. We bolted the rail brackets into the treads only — the original mahogany newel post and spindles were never contacted. The beige seat folds flat against the wall at the bottom landing, keeping the full tread width clear for other household members. Mrs. Henderson's husband rode it to the second-floor bedroom on install night for the first time in four months.

Georgetown 1820s federal — custom curved rail past the original banister

Georgetown, DC Installed February 2026

An 1824 federal on N Street NW in Georgetown with a 90-degree turn at the upper landing. Two prior contractors incorrectly warned that the Old Georgetown Board would need to approve an interior stairlift — interior work is unregulated under the Old Georgetown Act. We laser-scanned the staircase geometry, fabricated a single continuous curved rail that threads past the original early-19th-century banister post without contact, and installed in one afternoon. The brown-upholstered seat parks flush at the upper landing where the rail curves around the half-wall. Dr. A. said she had almost been scared out of the project by bad information from other companies.

Shaw wardman — compact straight rail in a narrow rowhouse stairwell

Shaw, DC Installed January 2026

A 1912 wardman on T Street NW in Shaw with a narrow interior stairwell typical of DC's early-20th-century rowhouse stock. The staircase runs straight from the ground floor to the second-floor landing with no turns. The compact-profile rail and folding seat leave enough clearance for other household members to pass on the stairs. We bolted the rail into the original hardwood treads using clean-bore brackets — the plaster walls and original trim were never touched. The seat sits at the bottom landing beside the entry console table. Mrs. Okafor told us the tight stairwell was why one previous company had declined the job.

Brookland wardman — outdoor lift for the English basement entry

Brookland, DC Installed December 2025

A 1924 wardman on Newton Street NE in Brookland. James is a retired federal worker and Army veteran who already had a main-floor interior stairlift. He needed a second lift for the 5-step English basement drop to reach the laundry and his daughter's basement apartment. We prefilled VA Form 10-0103, his VA provider at the Washington DC VA Medical Center on 50 Irving Street signed the medical necessity letter at his next appointment, and the HISA grant was approved in five weeks. Every bracket is galvanized, the motor housing is sealed to IP54, and the cold-rated battery held through a January cold snap that dropped to 12 degrees. James does his own laundry again for the first time in two years.

Cleveland Park Tudor — straight rail on carpeted stairs to the upper landing

Cleveland Park, DC Installed November 2025

A 1928 Tudor on Newark Street NW in Cleveland Park with a standard straight staircase running 15 feet from the tiled ground-floor foyer to the carpeted upper hallway. The brown-upholstered seat blends with the warm carpet tones on the treads. The Robinson family's primary concern was top-step safety — their mother had stumbled at the upper landing during a power outage the previous winter. The swivel-exit seat rotates 90 degrees at the top so she steps off onto the hallway floor rather than balancing on the top tread. The battery backup kept the unit operational during a six-hour January outage. The original 1928 oak banister on the opposite wall was never touched.

Platform Lift

Columbia Heights Victorian — indoor wheelchair platform lift for a split-level entry

Columbia Heights, DC Installed October 2025

A late-1890s Victorian on Park Road NW in Columbia Heights where Mrs. Delgado's mother uses a power wheelchair full-time after a stroke and cannot transfer to a seated stairlift. We installed an inclined wheelchair platform lift on the indoor stairway — a flat black anti-slip platform with yellow high-visibility safety edges on all sides and a white handrail along the wall. The platform rides the rail between the entry level and the main living area, carrying the wheelchair and rider without any transfer required. The entire consultation and installation was conducted in Spanish at the family's request. Three companies had told the family that a wheelchair user could not use their split-level stairs. The platform lift proved them wrong.

Common Questions

Everything Washington Homeowners Actually Ask

Straight answers about cost, installation, and funding — no sales fluff. Browse by topic or call us if you have a question that isn't here.

What does a stairlift actually cost in Washington DC right now?

Straight rails in a standard DC wardman or federal rowhouse run $2,800 to $5,500 installed. Curved rails — common in Georgetown federals, Dupont and Logan Circle Victorian rehabs, and the 1920s estates in Wesley Heights and Cleveland Park where the stair turns at a mid-landing — run $9,000 to $15,000 because the rail is custom-fabricated to your exact geometry. Outdoor front-stoop lifts for the signature 3-6 step Capitol Hill or Shaw rowhouse stoop run $4,500 to $8,000, and English basement lifts (another 4-6 steps below grade on many wardmans) run in the same range. Every quote is written, honored for 30 days, and includes installation, rail, seat, battery backup, and the first service visit.

Is there a Georgetown or Capitol Hill historic-district surcharge?

No. Equipment prices are the same whether your home is a 1790s Georgetown federal or a 1925 Brookland wardman. What can add a few hundred dollars in historic districts is the paperwork pathway: inside the Georgetown Historic District the Old Georgetown Act gives the Commission of Fine Arts review authority over exterior-visible work, and in the rest of DC's 60+ historic districts (Capitol Hill, Dupont Circle, Logan Circle, Mount Pleasant, LeDroit Park, Shaw, Strivers Section, Kalorama Triangle, Sheridan-Kalorama, Anacostia, and many more) the DC Historic Preservation Review Board (HPRB) reviews exterior work. Interior stairlifts are not regulated. For exterior stoop lifts we file the HPRB or Old Georgetown Board application on your behalf at no charge — the review typically runs 30-60 days.

How much does a Capitol Hill front-stoop lift cost?

Outdoor inclined lifts for the classic Capitol Hill, Shaw, Columbia Heights, or H Street NE rowhouse front stoop run $4,500 to $8,000 depending on the number of limestone or brick steps (typical DC rowhouse stoop is 3 to 6 steps above the sidewalk, plus another 4-6 steps down to an English basement entry if that's where you want the lift). If the home sits inside the Capitol Hill Historic District or any other DC-designated district, HPRB review is required because the lift is visible from the street. The rail mounts to the stone treads with lead anchors, never into the rowhouse facade. Cold-rated batteries are standard on every DC outdoor install so the lift rides through January lows in the 10-25°F range without a service call.

Do you charge extra for Spanish-language service?

No. Our installer Luis is bilingual and runs DC assessments in Spanish at no surcharge — particularly valuable for the Spanish-speaking senior population concentrated in Columbia Heights, Mount Pleasant, Adams Morgan, and parts of Petworth. Every printed quote, consent form, and operating manual is also available in Spanish. The grown children calling from out of state — we get a lot of those in DC — can join the in-home assessment by FaceTime so they see every measurement in real time.

A word from Luis

Most DC calls start the same way: a federal rowhouse on Capitol Hill with a front stoop the owner can no longer climb, a Georgetown federal where the stairs to the English basement are suddenly impossible, a grown daughter in Bethesda calling about her mother's wardman in Petworth. I have worked every one of these. The Height Act means DC is a rowhouse city — there are no 30-story luxury towers to install in, so almost every conversation I have is about narrow interior stairs, a limestone front stoop, or a dual-level English basement entry.

My job is simple: get to your house inside DC, Arlington, Alexandria, Bethesda, or Silver Spring within 48 hours, hand you a written price honored for 30 days, and if your home is in a historic district — which applies to roughly a quarter of the city — put the HPRB or Old Georgetown Act paperwork in your hand on day one so the review clock starts immediately. Se habla español.
