Stairlift Service Across Alexandria County

Alexandria County, VA

From Old Town's Federal-period row houses — where the Board of Architectural Review governs exterior modifications and narrow 18th-century staircases demand slim-profile rails — to Del Ray's Craftsman bungalows along Mount Vernon Avenue, where a standard straight run installs in three hours. We know which Rosemont blocks are in the National Register historic district, which Seminary Hill colonials have the mid-landing split that requires a curved rail, and which Parker-Gray row houses need outdoor-rated models with BAR approval paperwork. We also cover Huntington, Rose Hill, Belle Haven, Bailey's Crossroads, Lincolnia, and Groveton — your tech is local, not driving from Richmond.

Old Town Federal row house — straight rail on original heart-pine treads

Old Town, VA Installed March 2026

A 1795 Federal row house on the 200 block of Prince Street with original heart-pine treads, horsehair plaster walls, and a staircase steep enough that Mrs. Thornton's physical therapist refused to clear her for independent use after a hip replacement. Luis bolted the rail into the treads only — self-supporting, no wall contact, no plaster damage. The rail finish was selected to complement the dark hardwood, and the seat parks at the bottom landing so it doesn't block the front hallway. The warm, open-tread staircase looks the same as it did before the install.

Seminary Hill colonial — curved rail with 90° upper landing past the newel post

Seminary Hill, VA Installed February 2026

A 1963 colonial on Seminary Road with a 90° turn at the upper landing and a decorative newel post the family wanted preserved. Col. Webb retired from Fort Belvoir twelve years ago, and the bedrooms are all on the second floor. Luis laser-scanned the staircase, fabricated a curved rail that threads past the newel post, and installed a swivel-exit seat at the top so he steps off onto the hallway floor. The seat parks at the upper landing with framed art on the wall behind it. His HISA grant through the Washington DC VA covered $6,800.

Rosemont Craftsman — compact straight rail beside an antique sideboard on original fir treads

Rosemont, VA Installed January 2026

A 1910 Craftsman cottage in the Rosemont Historic District with original fir treads, a stone foundation, and a wooden sideboard at the base of the stairs that Mrs. Nakamura refused to move. Two of the treads had a slight bow from 115 years of use — Luis shimmed the rail brackets to compensate so the chair rides perfectly level. The compact rail fits the cottage-scale staircase without crowding the entry, and the seat parks at the bottom next to the sideboard and a potted plant. The traditional, cozy interior stays intact.

Parker-Gray District — outdoor lift on stone entry steps with BAR approval

Parker-Gray, VA Installed December 2025

A 1920s row house in the Parker-Gray Historic District with a raised stone entry and six exterior steps with natural stone paving that iced over every winter. Because Parker-Gray is a locally regulated historic district, an exterior stairlift visible from the street requires a Certificate of Appropriateness from Alexandria's Board of Architectural Review. Luis prepared the BAR application at no charge and attended the review meeting with Mr. Douglas. The cream-colored weather-resistant seat sits on a powder-coated rail that matches the existing ironwork, with 316-stainless fasteners rated for road salt.

Beverley Hills colonial — straight rail on carpeted stairs, pre-surgery install

Beverley Hills, VA Installed November 2025

A 1955 colonial in Beverley Hills with wide, carpeted stairs and a clean straight run from the foyer to the bedrooms. Mrs. Patterson's orthopedic surgeon at Inova Alexandria Hospital told her she'd need a total knee replacement and shouldn't use the stairs unassisted for eight weeks post-op. Luis used extended mounting bolts that penetrate through the thick carpet pad into the subfloor for a rock-solid mount. The brown upholstery was selected to match the carpet tone, and the seat parks at the landing where the tiled foyer meets the carpeted stairs.

Platform Lift

Del Ray split-level — indoor wheelchair platform lift with yellow safety edges

Del Ray, VA Installed October 2025

A 1952 split-level off Mount Vernon Avenue where Mr. Chen uses a power wheelchair after a stroke. The five-step rise from the garage entry to the main living level made half the house inaccessible. Luis installed an inclined indoor platform lift with a flat black anti-slip platform, bright yellow high-visibility safety edges, and white handrails along the indoor stairway. The orange-toned walls and window light frame the lift naturally. Mr. Chen's HISA grant through the Washington DC VA covered $6,800 — he's a Navy veteran who served at the Pentagon for 22 years. We also filed the Virginia Livable Home Tax Credit application through DHCD, which returned an additional $6,500 on their state taxes.

Common Questions

Everything Alexandria Homeowners Actually Ask

Straight answers about cost, installation, and funding — no sales fluff. Browse by topic or call us if you have a question that isn't here.

What does a stairlift cost in Alexandria right now?

Straight rails in standard Alexandria homes — the Del Ray bungalows, the Beverley Hills colonials, the post-war single-families on Seminary Hill — run $2,800 to $5,500 installed. Curved rails, which you'll need for most Seminary Hill split-levels and some Old Town homes with L-shaped staircases, run $9,000 to $15,000 because the rail is manufactured to your exact staircase geometry. Outdoor models for raised stone entries and front stoops run $4,000 to $7,500 with freeze-thaw and salt-resistant spec included. Every quote is written, honored for 30 days, and includes installation, rail, seat, battery backup, and the first service visit.

Are prices different in Old Town than other Alexandria neighborhoods?

Equipment prices are identical across Alexandria. What can vary slightly is install labor for unusual conditions: fitting a slim-profile rail into a narrow 18th-century row house staircase in Old Town, shimming brackets for century-old treads in Rosemont, or preparing BAR paperwork for an exterior lift in the Old and Historic District or Parker-Gray. We list every line item on the written quote. No Old Town surcharge, no historic-district premium.

Can I combine the HISA grant with the Virginia Livable Home Tax Credit?

Yes — and most Alexandria families should. The VA HISA grant covers up to $6,800 for service-connected disabilities. The Virginia Livable Home Tax Credit through DHCD returns up to $6,500 on your state income taxes for accessibility modifications. They come from different sources and stack. On a $12,000 curved rail install, a veteran with a service-connected disability can recover over $13,000 between the two programs. We file both applications as part of our standard service.

Does insurance ever cover a stairlift in Alexandria?

Traditional Medicare does not cover stairlifts. Virginia Medicaid through CCC Plus does cover them as environmental modifications — see the funding tab. Some long-term care insurance policies and VA benefits cover partial or full cost. If your parent has a long-term care policy, check for 'home modification' or 'durable medical equipment' coverage. We provide the documentation format most insurers require.

A word from Luis

Most Alexandria families call me after someone has already rearranged their life around the stairs — a retired colonel in Seminary Hill sleeping in the study because the bedrooms are upstairs, a widow in a 1790s Old Town row house who hasn't used her second floor since the knee replacement, a daughter at the Pentagon worried about her mother in a Del Ray bungalow she's owned for 40 years.

I drive to your house within 24 hours, measure once, and give you a written price honored for 30 days. No pressure. No upsells. If you're using a VA benefit, I bring the HISA paperwork with me on the first visit.
