The standard for Portsmouth’s two-story homes — from Churchland ranches to Olde Towne Victorians. Over 70% of the stairlifts we install across Portsmouth are straight rails. The rail bolts to your stair treads (never into the wall), the seat and footrest fold up out of the way, and the battery backup keeps you moving through the next nor’easter power outage. Every Portsmouth install ships with a sealed motor housing and humidity-rated lubricant as standard because Tidewater air corrodes unprotected components in two seasons. Most Churchland and Brighton installs wrap in under four hours.

Starting at $2,800 installed

Our Coverage Area

Stairlift Service Across Portsmouth County

Portsmouth County, VA

From the colonial-era waterfront houses of Olde Towne — where the Historic Preservation Commission reviews any exterior accessibility modification on a contributing structure — to the 1918 shipyard bungalows of Cradock that were built for Norfolk Naval Shipyard families and still house their grandchildren, our team has mapped every staircase type in the city. We know which Port Norfolk Colonials along the Elizabeth River have the warped treads from 80 years of tidal humidity, which Park View Victorians near Crawford Bay Park need the slim-profile seat to clear the original banister, and which Churchland ranches off Route 17 have the wide 1960s stairs that install in three hours flat.

We also staff dedicated coverage across the full Hampton Roads metro — Norfolk, Chesapeake, Hampton, Suffolk — so you never wait on a tech driving down from Richmond. The Naval Medical Center Portsmouth HISA coordinator knows us by name.

Olde Towne Victorian — straight rail on original hardwood oak treads

Olde Towne, VA Installed March 2026

A 1904 Victorian in Olde Towne with original quarter-sawn oak treads and a turned walnut banister that Mrs. Dawson’s family has maintained for four generations. She called us after a knee replacement at Sentara Norfolk General left her sleeping on the living room couch for three weeks because the bedroom was upstairs. Her one condition: nothing touches the banister. We bolted a slim-profile straight rail directly into the oak treads, color-matched the rail finish to the existing walnut tone, and parked the chair flush against the wall at the bottom landing. The Historic Preservation Commission had no jurisdiction because the install is entirely interior. Her daughter drove down from Alexandria the following weekend and said she couldn’t tell where the rail ended and the original staircase began.

Port Norfolk Colonial — curved rail with upper landing turn past the newel post

Port Norfolk, VA Installed February 2026

A 1938 Colonial Revival in Port Norfolk overlooking the Elizabeth River, with an L-shaped staircase that turns 90 degrees at the upper landing. Mr. Tate is a retired Norfolk Naval Shipyard electrician who spent 32 years walking the same stairs to bed — until a spinal stenosis diagnosis made the top four steps impossible without his wife spotting him from behind. We laser-scanned the full run during the first visit, fabricated a curved rail that threads past the original newel post at the turn, and installed a swivel-exit seat so he steps off directly onto the upstairs hallway. The Elizabeth River humidity had warped two of the upper treads about 3/16 inch over 86 years — we shimmed the brackets to compensate. He rode it the first evening and told his wife he should have called us two years ago.

1918 Cradock bungalow — straight rail on original stone-trimmed cottage stairs

Cradock, VA Installed January 2026

A 1918 bungalow in Cradock — one of the original shipyard worker houses built by the federal government during World War I. The narrow staircase with stone-trimmed cottage detailing and low ceiling clearance required the slim-profile seat that folds nearly flat against the wall. Mrs. Fletcher is 84 and has lived in this house since 1967 when her husband was stationed at the shipyard. The stairs are tight — 28 inches between the wall and the banister — but the slim seat clears with two inches to spare on each side. She walks past the folded chair to get to the kitchen and rides it up to bed every night. Her grandson in the Navy still visits and takes the stairs two at a time around her parked lift without missing a step.

Churchland ranch — outdoor lift on stone-paved front entry steps

Churchland, VA Installed December 2025

A 1962 ranch in Churchland with six stone-paved front entry steps and a covered porch that Mr. Williams built himself in 1985. He’s a retired Navy Senior Chief who qualified for an HISA grant through the Hampton VA Medical Center — we prefilled VA Form 10-0103, and the prescription came back in four weeks. The outdoor lift is bolted into the stone paving with marine-grade anchors, sealed against Hampton Roads humidity and salt air with an IP55-rated motor housing, and has a UV-stabilized seat cover rated for the direct afternoon sun that hits the west-facing entry from April through October. The rail has a leaf-and-debris guard because the mature oaks along his street drop acorns and leaves onto everything below. It’s run through a full hurricane season without a service call.

Brighton split-level — straight rail on carpeted stairs, same-day install

Brighton, VA Installed November 2025

A 1971 split-level in Brighton with wall-to-wall carpeted stairs — the most common staircase we measure in postwar Portsmouth. Mr. Jennings had a stroke eight months prior and his physical therapist at Sentara CarePlex told him flat out: stop using those stairs unassisted or move to a single-story. His daughter called us on a Tuesday, we measured Wednesday morning, and installed Thursday afternoon. The rail bolts through the carpet into the wooden treads underneath — no carpet removal, no exposed subfloor, no re-stretching needed afterward. The chair folds flat at the bottom so the grandchildren still run up and down without squeezing past anything. He told us the PT cleared him to ride it solo the following week.

Platform Lift

Park View home — indoor wheelchair platform lift with yellow safety edges

Park View, VA Installed October 2025

A 1946 Cape Cod in Park View where Mr. Carter, a Korean War veteran with a power wheelchair, needed to access the upper floor without transferring out of his chair. A seated stairlift was not an option — he cannot stand or pivot. We installed an indoor wheelchair platform lift along the staircase wall with high-visibility yellow safety edges on the platform perimeter, automatic ramp fold-out at both levels, and a keyed lockout so the grandchildren can’t operate it unsupervised. The platform is rated for 750 lbs — wheelchair plus occupant plus a margin that matters. The HISA grant through the Hampton VA Medical Center covered the full installation cost for his service-connected disability. He rolls onto the platform at the bottom, presses one button, and rolls off at the top without ever leaving his chair.

Common Questions

Everything Portsmouth Homeowners Actually Ask

Straight answers about cost, installation, and funding — no sales fluff. Browse by topic or call us if you have a question that isn't here.

What does a stairlift cost in Portsmouth right now?

Straight rails in standard Portsmouth homes — the Churchland ranches, the Brighton split-levels, the Cradock bungalows — run $2,800 to $5,500 installed. Curved rails for the Olde Towne Victorians with landing turns or the Park View homes with L-shaped staircases run $9,000 to $15,000 because the rail is manufactured to your exact staircase geometry. Outdoor and humidity-sealed models for raised front porches run $4,000 to $7,500. Every quote is written, honored for 30 days, and includes installation, rail, seat, battery backup, and the first service visit.

Does the Tidewater humidity affect pricing or equipment choice?

Equipment prices are the same statewide — we don’t inflate quotes for waterfront addresses. What changes is spec: every Portsmouth install ships with a sealed motor housing, humidity-rated lubricant, and corrosion-resistant rail brackets as standard. The Elizabeth River salt air and the 80%+ summer humidity in Hampton Roads corrode unprotected components faster than anywhere else in Virginia. These are our default specs here, not add-ons. The line items are visible on every written quote.

Is a curved rail always more expensive than straight?

Yes — because it’s custom-manufactured for your exact staircase. A straight rail is a standard length cut on-site. A curved rail starts with a digital scan of your staircase geometry, gets fabricated to match every turn and angle, and arrives as a one-piece track. The fabrication takes 1–2 weeks and adds $4,000–$8,000 over a straight rail. If your staircase has a mid-landing turn — common in Olde Towne and Port Norfolk older homes — there’s no way around it. We tell you on the first visit, not after you’ve signed anything.

Do you offer financing for families who don’t qualify for HISA or CCC Plus?

Yes — three lending partners with 0% APR for qualified buyers and low fixed-rate plans from $79/month. Application is a soft credit pull (no hit to your score), takes about 4 minutes, and approval is usually instant. Many Portsmouth families combine financing with the Livable Home Tax Credit or a partial HISA grant to bring the effective cost down further. We walk you through the math during the free assessment — on paper, not a tablet screen.

A word from Luis

Most Portsmouth families call me after the same realization — the stairs in a 1920s Olde Towne Victorian or a 1940s Cradock bungalow that worked fine for 40 years stopped working after a hip replacement, a stroke, or a fall that never quite healed. This is a Navy town. Half my calls come from retired shipyard workers or military families who’ve been in the same house since their first duty station.

My job is straightforward: drive to your house within 24 hours, measure your staircase, and hand you a written price good for 30 days. No pressure. No upsells. En español si lo prefiere.
