Straight Stairlift — New York, NY

Straight Stairlift

The workhorse of Queens two-families, Bronx row houses, and Staten Island split-levels.

Over 65% of the stairlifts we install in the five boroughs are straight rails. The rail bolts to your existing stair treads only — never into the wall, never into the plaster, never into the original banister on a pre-war building. Battery backup keeps you moving through a Con Ed outage. Most NYC straight-rail installs wrap in under four hours, and the slim-profile version fits the grandfathered narrow treads we see in pre-1960 two-families across Astoria, Flushing, Bay Ridge, and the Bronx.

Starting at $3,300 installed

What's Included

  • Battery backup for power outages
  • Swivel seat with safety lock
  • Two wireless remote controls
  • Soft start and soft stop motion
  • Fold-up seat, arms, and footrest
  • 10-year motor & gearbox warranty

Compared to Alternatives

vs Curved: 3x less expensive and installed in one visit. vs Home elevator: 10-15x less cost and no construction. vs Moving bedroom downstairs: Keeps your home exactly as it is.

Stairlift Service Across Queens County

Queens County, NY

From Upper East Side co-ops on Fifth and Park to Park Slope brownstones with 11-step stoops, from Astoria two-families to Riverdale single-family homes, our crew has mapped the staircase geometry of thousands of NYC buildings. We know which Flushing two-family staircases were built in the 1950s with 31-inch tread widths (the slim rail is the only fit), which Brooklyn Heights brownstones fall inside the Landmarks historic district and need a Certificate of No Effect before an exterior stoop lift goes in, and which Bay Ridge and Bensonhurst attached homes share a party wall where the stair framing runs in the direction that makes the rail installation straightforward.

Because the five boroughs are one continuous catchment, we cover every ZIP from Inwood in upper Manhattan to Tottenville at the southern tip of Staten Island — plus the immediate Long Island towns of Bellerose, Bellerose Terrace, and Inwood, NY in Nassau, where the county Home Improvement Contractor license applies instead of the NYC DCWP. We carry both licenses so we don't have to hand your job off.

Pre-war Upper East Side co-op — original mahogany banister untouched

Upper East Side, NY Installed March 2026

A 1927 pre-war co-op on East 78th Street with an original mahogany banister, a 90-degree turn at the mid-landing, and a co-op board that asked for a separate structural engineer's letter on top of our packet. We delivered the engineer letter within 8 days, got board approval in the next Thursday meeting, laser-scanned the staircase for rail fabrication, and installed in a single afternoon twelve days later. The curved rail threads past the original newel post with a half-inch clearance and the chair parks flush at the upper landing. Mrs. Rothstein's housekeeper polishes around it weekly and the banister has not been touched.

Park Slope brownstone stoop — Landmarks-approved exterior inclined lift

Park Slope, NY Installed February 2026

An 1898 brownstone on Carroll Street inside the Park Slope Historic District. Mr. Callahan's hip replacement meant the 11-step front stoop was unusable. We filed a Certificate of No Effect with the Landmarks Preservation Commission on day two — because the rail mounts to the stone treads with lead anchors and does not touch the brownstone facade, LPC approved in five weeks without a hearing. The rail is powder-coated dark bronze to blend with the wrought-iron handrail, the chair folds flush against the building when parked, and the weather enclosure rode out three nor'easters this winter without a service call.

Astoria two-family — slim-profile rail for a 31-inch tread width

Astoria, NY Installed January 2026

A 1952 two-family attached house on 31st Street in Astoria with stair treads only 31 inches wide — narrower than the NYC Building Code minimum for new construction, but grandfathered because the house predates it. A standard-width chair would have blocked the stair entirely for other family members going up around the lift. We specified the slim-profile rail and a compact 17-inch seat. Yiayia rides it up to her second-floor kitchen while her grandchildren still walk past her on the same staircase. The consultation ran half in Greek — Mr. Papadopoulos translated for his mother.

Flushing single-family — full consultation in Mandarin

Flushing, NY Installed December 2025

A 1960s single-family on Kissena Boulevard in Flushing. Mrs. Chen speaks Mandarin and limited English, and her daughter was calling from New Jersey. We sent a Mandarin-speaking installer on the first visit, walked the stairs with Mrs. Chen in her preferred language, FaceTimed the daughter through the measurements, and translated every line of the written quote. Four days later the rail was installed and Mrs. Chen rode it up and down three times before we packed up — insisting each time in Mandarin that her grandson not be told because it was 'for her, not him.'

Riverdale split-level — two 90° turns on a single rail

Riverdale, Bronx, NY Installed November 2025

A 1964 split-level on Independence Avenue in Riverdale with two 90° turns — one at a short mid-landing five steps up, another at the upper landing. Only a curved rail could handle it. We laser-scanned the staircase, fabricated a single continuous curved rail that handles both turns, and installed in one afternoon. Dr. Weinstein is an 82-year-old retired cardiologist who wanted to keep working from his third-floor home office; the lift carries him from the kitchen all the way up without a transfer. He called on a Monday and was riding by the following Thursday, ten days later.

Staten Island split-level — 600 lb capacity for a post-surgery recovery

Great Kills, Staten Island, NY Installed October 2025

A split-level on Hylan Boulevard in Great Kills. Mr. DiMarco was recovering from bilateral knee replacements and his orthopedist in the Staten Island University Hospital system was clear that full weight-bearing on stairs was off-limits for 12 weeks. The standard 300-lb chair was too narrow for him. We specified the reinforced heavy-duty frame with a 22-inch padded seat and a 600-lb capacity. The family called Monday, the assessment was Tuesday, the rail was installed the following Monday. Mr. DiMarco was back sleeping in his own upstairs bedroom the night of install day instead of on the living room couch where he had been for three weeks.

Common Questions

Everything New York Homeowners Actually Ask

Straight answers about cost, installation, and funding — no sales fluff. Browse by topic or call us if you have a question that isn't here.

What does a stairlift actually cost in NYC right now?

Straight rails in a standard NYC walk-up or two-family house run $2,800 to $5,500 installed. Curved rails — common in Park Slope brownstones, Brooklyn Heights townhouses, and Upper West Side duplexes where the stair turns at a mid-landing — run $9,000 to $15,000 because the rail is custom-fabricated to your exact stair geometry. Outdoor brownstone stoop lifts for the classic 8-12 step front stoop run $4,500 to $8,000 depending on rail length and weather enclosure. Every quote is written, honored for 30 days, and includes installation, rail, seat, battery backup, and the first service visit.

Is there a co-op or condo surcharge?

No. Equipment prices are the same whether your building is a Mitchell-Lama rental in the Bronx or a Fifth Avenue co-op. What can add cost in a few buildings is a board requirement we can't predict — an independent structural engineer's letter (some prewar UES boards ask for one, ~$800-$1,200 from the engineer), or an Alt 2 DOB filing if the lift is going on a common stair in a multiple dwelling. We tell you before the contract is signed whether your specific building is likely to trigger either. No phantom 'Manhattan premium.'

How much does a Brooklyn brownstone stoop lift cost?

Outdoor inclined lifts for brownstone front stoops in Park Slope, Cobble Hill, Fort Greene, and Bed-Stuy run $4,500 to $8,000 depending on the number of steps (typical brownstone stoop is 8 to 12), rail length, and whether we need a weather enclosure. If the brownstone is in a designated historic district (most of Park Slope, all of Brooklyn Heights, most of Fort Greene), the Landmarks Preservation Commission requires a Certificate of No Effect or Certificate of Appropriateness before install — we file that paperwork for you and the LPC review is typically 4-6 weeks. The rail mounts to the stone treads with lead anchors, not into the brownstone facade.

Do you charge extra for Mandarin, Cantonese, Russian, or Spanish service?

No. NYC calls get the right installer on the first visit. We have Mandarin and Cantonese capability for Flushing, Sunset Park, and Manhattan Chinatown, Russian for Brighton Beach and Sheepshead Bay, and Spanish across Washington Heights, Inwood, East Harlem, the South Bronx, and Corona. Every written quote, consent form, and operating manual is available in Spanish and simplified Chinese. The grown children calling from out of state (we get a lot of those) can join the in-home assessment by FaceTime so they see every measurement in real time.

A word from Luis

Most New York calls start with a co-op board packet question or a grown child in New Jersey whose mother won't leave her fourth-floor walk-up on West 86th. I've worked every building type this city has — pre-war Upper East Side co-ops, Park Slope brownstones with 11-step stoops, Astoria two-families, Mitchell-Lama rentals in the Bronx.

My job is simple: get to your apartment or house within 48 hours anywhere in the five boroughs, hand you a price that's honored for 30 days, and put the full co-op board documentation packet in your hand on day one so your building doesn't stall the install. Se habla español. 也講中文 — 普通話 and 廣東話 both.
