Straight Stairlift

The workhorse of Topeka's older homes — from Potwin Place Victorians to Highland Crest ranches.

Over 70% of the stairlifts we install across the Topeka area are straight models. The rail bolts into your stair treads — never into the wall or the banister — and the seat and footrest fold flat out of the way. Every Topeka install ships with a 72-hour extended-backup battery and a surge-rated charge module for the voltage sag that hits during Kansas thunderstorms and ice events. Most installs in standard Topeka homes wrap in under four hours.

Starting at $2,400 installed

Stairlift Service Across Shawnee County

Shawnee County, KS

From the Queen Anne Victorians on red-brick streets in Potwin Place — some predating Kansas statehood — to the 1905 colonials near Washburn University in College Hill, the 1930s catalog homes with stone-trimmed treads in Westboro, the bungalows with raised porches in Ward-Meade, the 1950s ranches in Highland Crest, and the split-levels in Likins Foster, our team has measured staircases across every Topeka neighborhood. Each era brings different stair geometry, tread material, and anchoring requirements — and we have installed on all of them across Shawnee County.

1892 Potwin Place Queen Anne — straight rail on original oak treads

Potwin Place, KS Installed March 2026

A Queen Anne Victorian in Potwin Place built in 1892, with 14 original oak treads and an ornamental banister that is the first thing visitors see from the foyer. Mrs. Keller had been sleeping in the parlor since a hip replacement because the stairs were off-limits. We measured the 15-foot straight run, confirmed the century-old oak treads could accept the mounting hardware, and installed the same week. The rail bolts into treads only — the original banister, spindles, and newel post were never drilled or touched. She slept upstairs that night for the first time in two months.

1905 College Hill colonial — curved rail through upper-landing 90° turn

College Hill, KS Installed February 2026

A 1905 colonial near Washburn University in College Hill with 13 steps from the foyer and a 90-degree turn at the upper landing. Two competitors quoted two separate lifts with a transfer at the landing. We laser-scanned the full run, fabricated a single curved rail that carries Mr. Reynolds from the foyer to the bedroom hallway in one continuous ride, and installed a swivel-exit seat at the top. The original longleaf pine risers are untouched — the rail bolts into treads only. One ride, zero transfers.

1930s Westboro cottage — straight rail on stone-trimmed treads

Westboro, KS Installed January 2026

A 1930s Sears catalog home in the Westboro neighborhood with stone-trimmed treads on a narrow 34-inch staircase. The brown-upholstered seat sits at the bottom near a wooden sideboard and potted plant Mrs. Brennan keeps by the landing. We used masonry anchors in the stone trim and shimmed each mount to match the tread angle. Folded, the seat and rail take up 11 inches, leaving 23 inches of clear passage. Her son bought the lift from out of state after a FaceTime walkthrough — Mrs. Brennan had it three days after the first call.

Ward-Meade bungalow — outdoor lift on stone paving entry steps

Ward-Meade, KS Installed December 2025

A bungalow in the Ward-Meade neighborhood with seven raised stone paving steps at the front porch entry. Mr. Henderson is a retired Fort Riley veteran with a service-connected back injury. The outdoor lift carries full weather protection: sealed motor housing rated IP55, cold-rated cells certified to negative 20 degrees, and surge-rated charge modules for Kansas ice-storm outages. The Colmery-O'Neil VA wrote the prescription and the HISA grant covered $6,800. The lift ran through a January ice storm without losing power — the 72-hour battery backup held for the full two-day outage.

1950s Highland Crest ranch — straight rail on carpeted basement stairs

Highland Crest, KS Installed November 2025

A 1950s ranch in Highland Crest with carpeted stairs from the main floor down to the finished basement where Mr. Walsh keeps his workshop. Template jigs marked the anchor points through the carpet — longer bolts drove through carpet and pad into the wood subfloor beneath. No carpet cutting, no damage to the pile. The seat folds flat against the wall and leaves the full staircase width clear. His grandchildren use the stairs every weekend without any interference from the folded rail.

Platform Lift

Likins Foster split-level — inclined wheelchair platform lift with yellow safety edges

Likins Foster, KS Installed October 2025

A 1950s split-level in the Likins Foster neighborhood. Mrs. Weber uses a power wheelchair full-time and a seated stairlift was not an option — she cannot transfer safely. We installed an inclined wheelchair platform lift along the indoor stairway: a flat black anti-slip platform with yellow high-visibility safety edges on all thresholds, white handrails, and a keyed lockout so visiting grandchildren cannot activate it unsupervised. Her occupational therapist from the VA said it cut her morning routine by 15 minutes. She rolls on, presses one button, and rides the incline to the upper level without leaving her chair.

Common Questions

Everything Topeka Homeowners Actually Ask

Straight answers about cost, installation, and funding — no sales fluff. Browse by topic or call us if you have a question that isn't here.

What does a stairlift cost in Topeka right now?

Straight rails in standard Topeka homes — the ranches in Highland Crest, the bungalows in Ward-Meade, the newer builds west of Gage Boulevard — run $2,800 to $5,500 installed. Curved rails for homes with landing turns, common in Potwin Place Victorians and College Hill colonials, run $9,000 to $15,000 because the rail is manufactured to your exact staircase geometry. Outdoor models for raised porches and entries run $4,000 to $7,500. Every quote is written, honored for 30 days, and includes installation, rail, seat, 72-hour battery backup, and the first service visit.

Are prices different in Potwin Place or College Hill than in newer Topeka neighborhoods?

Equipment pricing is uniform across all Topeka neighborhoods. Labor varies slightly for unusual conditions: subfloor settlement in 130-year-old Potwin Place homes, masonry anchors in stone-trimmed Westboro treads, or threading curved rails past original spindles in College Hill colonials. We tell you the line items upfront on the written quote — no surprises after we start.

Why does every Topeka install include a 72-hour battery backup?

Kansas averages 96 tornadoes annually and ice storms cause multi-day power outages across Shawnee County every winter. Standard stairlift batteries last only 8 to 12 hours. Every unit we install in Topeka includes extended-backup batteries rated for 72 hours, surge-rated charge modules, and cold-rated cells certified to negative 20 degrees Fahrenheit. The backup is baseline, not an upgrade.

A word from Luis

Most Topeka families call me after the second near-miss — a slip on narrow treads in a Potwin Place Queen Anne, a father who stopped going upstairs six months ago in a College Hill colonial, a retired airman in Highland Crest whose knees gave out before his mortgage did.

I drive to your house within 24 hours, measure with a laser, and hand you a written quote good for 30 days. If you're a veteran using the Colmery-O'Neil VA, I bring the HISA paperwork with me and we fill it out at your kitchen table. En español si lo prefiere.
