Stairlift Service Across Douglas County

Douglas County, WI

We install across every residential pocket of Superior. The East End — with its Victorian houses off East 5th and East 6th streets — has some of the narrowest staircases we work on, often 30 inches wide with hardwood treads. Central Park is the city's oldest platted townsite, where 1880s-era homes mix with mid-century rebuilds and stair geometry varies house to house. Billings Park, west of Tower Avenue near the St. Louis River, is mostly 1960s-to-1990s split-levels and ranches — straight-rail country. Allouez-Itasca, the bayfront neighborhood with railroad roots, holds compact worker-era homes where every inch of floor plan counts. South Superior has newer construction alongside older stock, and North End mixes single-family homes with duplex conversions near the University of Wisconsin–Superior campus.

Straight

Victorian Straight Rail, East End

East End, WI Installed March 2026

The Kowalskis' East End Victorian, built in 1904, had original oak treads worn smooth from 120 years of use. The straight flight climbed 13 feet from the front entry to a narrow second-floor landing. Luis bolted the rail to the treads — not the wall — keeping the plaster crown molding intact. The cream-colored seat tucks to less than 14 inches from the banister when folded.

Curved

Curved Rail at Landing Turn, Central Park

Central Park, WI Installed January 2026

The Olsons' 1895 Central Park home had a staircase that ran eight feet up, turned 90 degrees at a half-wall, then climbed another six feet to the upper hallway. A straight rail was impossible. Luis laser-measured the turn radius on site, sent the scan file to fabrication, and returned three weeks later with a two-section curved rail. The brown seat parks at the top floor, out of the hallway path.

Straight

Compact Straight Fit, Allouez-Itasca

Allouez-Itasca, WI Installed February 2026

The Jorgensens' 1910 worker-era home in Allouez-Itasca had stone-tread stairs only 31 inches wide — built tight for a railroad-town house where space was at a premium. Luis used a slim-rail model with a folding seat that collapses against the wall. A narrow sideboard at the base of the stairs stayed in place; the rail started just above it. The brown seat blends with the dark stone treads.

Outdoor

Outdoor Porch Install, Billings Park

Billings Park, WI Installed October 2025

The Hendricks' Billings Park home had six concrete steps from the driveway up to the side porch — a straight outdoor run exposed to full Lake Superior weather. Luis installed an IP55-rated outdoor rail with a marine-grade coating and sealed motor housing. The cream-colored seat sits at the bottom, and the unit has handled 60-plus inches of snowfall and subzero cold without a single fault.

Straight

Carpeted Straight Rail, South Superior

South Superior, WI Installed April 2026

The Millers' 1978 split-level in South Superior had a carpeted straight flight running from the family room up to the bedroom level — 12 feet with beige berber carpet. The brown leather-look seat matched the carpet tones exactly. Luis installed the rail on the right side to keep the left-hand railing clear for other family members. Tiled entry at the base gave a clean mounting surface for the bottom bracket.

Platform Lift

Indoor Wheelchair Platform, North End

North End, WI Installed February 2026

The Schumachers needed a solution for their North End split-level where Mr. Schumacher — a full-time wheelchair user — couldn't access the main floor. Luis installed an indoor inclined platform lift with a flat black deck and yellow safety edges alongside the existing staircase. The platform carries the wheelchair and rider up to 600 lb. White side rails match the home's existing handrail. Indoor use only, runs on standard 120V with battery backup.

Common Questions

Everything Superior Homeowners Actually Ask

Straight answers about cost, installation, and funding — no sales fluff. Browse by topic or call us if you have a question that isn't here.

What does a stairlift cost in Superior?

Straight stairlifts start at $2,800 installed. Curved lifts, which need a custom-bent rail matched to your stair geometry, start at $9,000. Outdoor units start at $4,000 and include weather-sealed components rated for Lake Superior winters. Heavy-duty lifts (up to 600 lb capacity) start at $5,050. Every quote includes the in-home measurement visit, the rail, the seat, installation labor, and a 5-year warranty with lifetime rail coverage. Financing runs $79/month.

Why do curved stairlifts cost more in Superior?

Curved lifts cost more because the rail is custom-bent off site after a laser measurement of your exact stairs. Superior's older neighborhoods — East End, Central Park, Allouez-Itasca — have a lot of staircases that turn at a landing or wind partway up. Those can't use a straight rail. The measurement visit takes about an hour. The rail is then fabricated to match your turn radius and rise precisely. Installation itself is still a single-day job.

Are there any hidden fees with Superior stairlift installation?

No. The price Luis quotes at the in-home assessment is the price you pay. It covers the rail, seat, delivery, installation labor, and a 5-year warranty. If your stairs need an intermediate landing bracket or a longer-than-standard rail section, that's accounted for in the quote Luis gives you on site. The only thing not included is optional add-ons like the heated seat or powered swivel — and Luis tells you about those upfront so you can decide.

Does insurance cover stairlift costs in Superior?

Medicare doesn't cover stairlifts. Private insurance sometimes covers a portion if you have a long-term care rider — call your provider and ask about "durable medical equipment for home accessibility." Wisconsin's IRIS program (Include, Respect, I Self-Direct) — the state's Medicaid HCBS waiver — covers environmental accessibility adaptations including stairlifts for eligible participants. The Douglas County ADRC at 1316 N. 14th St. can walk you through IRIS eligibility. VA HISA grants cover up to $6,800 for qualifying veterans.

A word from Luis

Superior homes pack a lot of stairway variety into a small city. The East End and Central Park are full of Victorians from the 1880s and 1890s — gorgeous woodwork, but stairs that measure 30 inches wide with a tight turn at the landing. A curved rail bent to that exact geometry gets a homeowner from the second-floor bathroom back without a struggle. Over in Billings Park, I see more split-levels from the 1960s and 70s — straight flights, straightforward bolt-to-tread installs, three hours and done.

The thing people ask about most here is the cold. Lake Superior winters deliver 60-plus inches of snow and weeks where the high stays in single digits. Every lift we install comes with a DC-motor battery backup — it runs the rail for about six hours after the power drops. I've had customers on Tower Avenue tell me the backup kept them moving through a three-day outage in January without a hitch. That's not marketing; that's the spec.

For veterans, the Twin Ports VA Clinic right on Tower Avenue handles HISA grant paperwork on site. Your primary care provider there writes the medical-necessity statement, the clinic submits it, and we coordinate the install once the $6,800 grant clears. It's the same process whether you're in Allouez-Itasca, South Superior, or anywhere else in Douglas County.

— Luis Ramírez, Superior
Your Next Step

Ready to get started? It's simple.

Superior's housing stock tells the story of a port city that grew fast in the 1880s, plateaued, and built again in the mid-20th century. That means staircases here range from ornate Victorian tight-turners in the East End to wide, straight flights in Billings Park split-levels. No two jobs are identical — and after 15 years installing here, Luis has worked on just about every stair configuration Douglas County throws at him.

Call or fill out the form to schedule an in-home assessment. Luis comes out, measures your stairs, checks the tread material and landing space, and gives you a written quote same-day. No pressure, no sales pitch — just a neighbor who knows Superior stairs better than anyone.
