Stairlift Service Across St. Louis County

St. Louis County, MN

From the steep bungalow blocks of East Hillside and Central Hillside — where 1900s-era fir treads, narrow widths, and 40-degree pitches are the norm — to the Edwardian estates of Congdon Park, where curved rails thread past original quarter-sawn oak without touching the banister. Lincoln Park craftsman rehabs often have subfloor issues requiring shimmed brackets. Park Point's raised-foundation homes need weather-sealed outdoor rails rated for lake-effect spray. Lakeside and Lester Park split-levels from the 1960s commonly have the mid-landing turn that demands custom curved track. We serve Proctor, Hermantown, and Rice Lake with the same 24-hour assessment — no travel surcharge inside St. Louis County.

1918 East Hillside bungalow — straight rail on original oak treads

East Hillside, MN Installed February 2026

A 1918 bungalow on a steep East Hillside block with original oak treads varnished so many times they were glass-smooth in winter socks. Mrs. Koivisto fell on the third step from the top in December and bruised two ribs. We measured a straight 14-foot run with a 38-degree pitch and bolted the rail into the dark hardwood treads only — not the wall, not the original fir wainscoting lining the stairwell. The seat sits at the bottom of the open-tread run in the warm entryway. Cold-pack battery rated to -30°F because the stairwell shares a wall with an unheated enclosed porch.

Congdon Park Edwardian — curved rail past the original walnut newel post

Congdon Park, MN Installed January 2026

A 1912 Edwardian home along London Road in Congdon Park with a sweeping staircase, original walnut newel post, and a 90-degree turn at the upper landing. Mr. Lindquist had been sleeping in the downstairs den for three months after knee replacement surgery. We laser-scanned the entire staircase, fabricated a curved rail that follows the wall side and clears the carved newel by two inches, and added a swivel-exit seat at the upper landing. He parks at the top floor and steps off onto level hallway flooring. The walnut millwork is completely untouched.

Central Hillside cottage — compact rail beside the hall cabinet on stone treads

Central Hillside, MN Installed October 2025

A 1930s cottage in Central Hillside with original stone-capped treads and a compact stairwell. The seat sits at the bottom next to the family's wooden hall cabinet and a potted plant Mrs. Pelto keeps on the landing. We fitted a slim-profile straight rail with a folding seat and footrest that tuck flat, leaving clearance for the cabinet and foot traffic. The traditional stone treads and cozy proportions give the stairwell a warm, cottage feel — the rail fits without changing the character of the space.

Park Point raised entry — outdoor stairlift on stone-paved front porch

Park Point, MN Installed November 2025

The Erickson family's raised-foundation home on Park Point has a stone-paved front entry with seven exterior steps fully exposed to Lake Superior wind, spray, and ice. Mrs. Erickson had been entering through the garage for two winters because the front steps were too dangerous after October. We anchored a weather-sealed outdoor rail directly into the rough stone paving with stainless-steel fasteners, fitted a cream-colored UV-resistant seat, and sealed every electrical connection against lake-driven moisture. She steps off onto the covered porch and through her front door — year-round again.

Lakeside split-level — straight rail on carpeted stairs with matching upholstery

Lakeside, MN Installed September 2025

A 1963 split-level in Lakeside with wall-to-wall carpet on the main staircase — 13 steps from the entry foyer to the upper bedrooms. Mrs. Mattson had been sleeping in the guest room downstairs for six months. We bolted the rail through the carpet into the stair treads beneath — no carpet removal, no re-stretching. The brown-upholstered seat blends with the warm carpet tones at the landing. The folding seat tucks flat against the wall, leaving the full walkway open. She was back upstairs in her own bedroom the same afternoon.

Platform Lift

Central Hillside duplex — indoor wheelchair platform lift for full-time chair user

Central Hillside, MN Installed August 2025

Mr. Zupancich uses a power wheelchair full-time after a spinal cord injury and the interior staircase in his Central Hillside duplex was the only barrier between the ground-floor entry and his upper-floor apartment. A seated stairlift would have required him to transfer twice — not feasible. We installed an inclined wheelchair platform lift inside the stairwell: a flat anti-slip platform with high-visibility yellow safety edges, white handrails on both sides, and a sealed motor housing against the orange-toned interior walls. He rolls onto the platform, presses one button, and rides to the upper floor without leaving his chair.

Common Questions

Everything Duluth Homeowners Actually Ask

Straight answers about cost, installation, and funding — no sales fluff. Browse by topic or call us if you have a question that isn't here.

What does a stairlift cost in Duluth right now?

Straight rails for standard Duluth homes — the East Hillside bungalows, Lakeside split-levels, basement workshop stairs — run $2,800 to $5,500 installed, including the cold-pack battery upgrade that's standard on every Northland unit. Curved rails for Congdon Park Edwardians, Lincoln Park craftsman landings, and split-level mid-landing turns run $9,000 to $15,000 because the rail is laser-scanned and fabricated to your exact geometry. Outdoor rails for Park Point and hillside exterior entries run $4,000 to $7,500 with full weather sealing. Every quote is written, honored for 30 days, and includes installation, rail, seat, cold-rated battery, and the first service visit.

Does the Minnesota Elderly Waiver cover stairlifts in St. Louis County?

Yes. The Elderly Waiver covers stairlifts under the Environmental Accessibility Adaptations (EAA) service category, with a lifetime cap of $20,000 — enough for most curved-rail installs. You need to be 65+, Medicaid-eligible, and clinically assessed at nursing-facility level of care through the MnCHOICES assessment administered by St. Louis County. Start by calling the Senior LinkAge Line at 1-800-333-2433 — they route you directly to St. Louis County's lead agency. Name us as your EAA vendor and we handle the modification justification paperwork.

Are Duluth installs more expensive because of the cold and terrain?

Equipment prices are the same across Minnesota. The cold-pack battery rated to -30°F is included standard on every Northland install — not an upcharge. What can add modest cost is compensating for foundation settlement on pre-1940 hillside homes (common in East Hillside and Central Hillside), or the weather-sealing package for exposed outdoor stairs on Park Point and along the lakefront. We itemize everything on the written quote. No hidden premiums.

Can I combine HISA and the Elderly Waiver?

They serve different populations — HISA is for veterans enrolled in VA health care, and the Elderly Waiver is a Medicaid program for 65+ residents assessed at nursing-facility level. If you qualify for both, we help you stack them. The HISA grant pays up to $6,800 for service-connected disabilities, and the Elderly Waiver can cover the remainder up to its $20,000 lifetime cap. The St. Louis County Veterans Services Office at 218-725-5285 and the Senior LinkAge Line at 1-800-333-2433 are the two starting points.

A word from Luis

Most Duluth calls start the same way — someone slipped on ice-packed front steps, or the basement stairs in a 1920s East Hillside bungalow finally became too steep after a hip replacement. Duluth's terrain is vertical. The city climbs 800 feet from Lake Superior to the ridge, and nearly every home built before 1960 has at least one staircase that was designed for a 25-year-old iron miner, not a retired homeowner with bad knees.

I drive to your house within 24 hours, measure once, and hand you a written quote honored for 30 days. No pressure. No upsells. If you qualify for the Elderly Waiver through St. Louis County, I'll walk you through the MnCHOICES paperwork at your kitchen table.
