Stairlift Service Across Centre County

Centre County, PA

State College stairlift installations reach every corner of Centre County. In College Heights, National Register Colonials and Tudor Revivals from the 1920s mean narrow staircases with 90-year-old oak treads — straight rails bolt cleanly, but we measure twice. Holmes-Foster bungalows and Georgian Colonials often hide carpeted stairs with tight upper-landing turns. Over in Park Forest Village, 1960s split-levels need rails that bridge the half-flight landing without blocking the hallway. Vallamont architect-designed homes from the early 20th century bring Foursquares with wide treads but steep rises. Newer Orchard Park townhomes and Nittany Hills East two-stories round out the mix.

1920s College Heights Colonial Gets a Straight Rail

College Heights, PA Installed March 2026

Original oak treads in a 1926 Dutch Colonial, preserved by three generations of the Henderson family. The staircase runs straight from the living room to the second floor — 14 treads, 8-inch rise, narrow by modern code at just 32 inches wide. Luis bolted the rail directly to the treads using rubber-gasket mounts to protect the 100-year-old hardwood. The beige seat parks at the bottom landing, folded flat against the rail when not in use. No wall contact, no plaster damage.

Holmes-Foster Bungalow Curved Rail at the Upper Landing

Holmes-Foster, PA Installed February 2026

A 1938 brick bungalow with a 90-degree turn at the upper landing, where the stairs meet a half-wall before opening into the hallway. The curved rail was laser-measured on site, then fabricated to follow the turn within a quarter-inch. The brown seat parks at the top floor, tucked against the half-wall so it doesn't block the bedroom doors. Original hardwood treads meant pre-drilling every bolt hole to avoid splitting the aged oak. Total rail length: 22 feet across two sections.

Vallamont Foursquare with Stone-Tread Staircase

Vallamont, PA Installed April 2026

A 1915 American Foursquare with an unusual feature: stone-and-tile stair treads on the main staircase leading from the foyer. The Peterson family had avoided stairlift installation for years, worried about drilling into the stone. Luis used a carbide-tipped bit and epoxy-anchored bolts that grip the stone without cracking it. The brown seat matches the dark wood trim in the foyer. The rail runs 13 feet straight, bolted at six points, and clears the antique sideboard at the bottom by four inches.

Outdoor

Outdoor Porch Lift on Stone-Paved Entry in Park Forest Village

Park Forest Village, PA Installed October 2025

Eight rough-stone steps from the driveway to the front door of a 1972 split-level, with no space for a ramp due to the retaining wall on one side. The cream outdoor unit uses an IP55-sealed motor and marine-grade aluminum rail — the same spec Luis puts on oceanfront installs, here doing duty against Centre County freeze-thaw cycles. Rail joints were sealed with cold-weather silicone rated to -40°F. The seat cover sheds snow and rain. Still starting on the first try the following March.

Carpeted Staircase in a Greentree Two-Story

Greentree, PA Installed January 2026

A 1980s two-story with wall-to-wall beige carpet on 15 treads leading from the entry to the second floor. The brown seat and rail tone blend with the carpet color so the unit doesn't stand out from the hallway. Luis used longer lag bolts to anchor through the carpet and padding into the pine sub-treads beneath — standard on carpeted Centre County installs. The rail hugs the wall side, leaving the handrail side clear. Fifteen feet of track, four power points, one clean demo at the end.

Platform Lift

Indoor Wheelchair Platform Lift in an Orchard Park Townhome

Orchard Park, PA Installed May 2026

A 2005 townhome where the Collins' teenage daughter uses a manual wheelchair and needed independent access to her second-floor bedroom. The inclined platform lift runs on a straight rail with a flat black deck rated to 600 lb and yellow safety edges that stop the platform on contact. The rail bolts to the carpeted treads, and the platform folds up vertically at the bottom landing, leaving hallway clearance. Wiring ran to a dedicated 20-amp circuit per code. Tested with the wheelchair loaded, empty, and mid-stop.

Common Questions

Everything State College Homeowners Actually Ask

Straight answers about cost, installation, and funding — no sales fluff. Browse by topic or call us if you have a question that isn't here.

What does a stairlift cost in State College?

A straight stairlift in State College starts at $2,800 installed. That gets you a new rail, powered seat, battery backup, and two remote controls — fully installed in about 3 hours. Curved rails start at $9,000 because each rail is bent to match your exact stair turn after a 1-hour laser measurement. Outdoor lifts for porch or deck stairs start at $4,000. Heavy-duty models rated to 600 lb start at $5,050. All prices include the in-home assessment, installation, and a 5-year warranty on the motor plus a lifetime warranty on the rail.

Why do curved stairlifts cost more than straight ones in older State College homes?

A curved rail is custom-fabricated to your specific stairs — not an off-the-shelf part. In State College neighborhoods like Holmes-Foster or College Heights, where homes date to the 1920s-1940s, staircases often have mid-flight turns, angled landings, or odd rise-run ratios that require precise laser measurement. The rail is then bent at the factory to match. That custom fabrication, plus the longer install time (usually 5-6 hours vs. 3 for straight), accounts for the price difference.

Are there hidden fees I should expect with a State College stairlift install?

No. The price we quote is the price you pay — it covers the in-home measurement, the rail and seat unit, installation by Luis and his team, cleanup, and a walk-through demo. The only add-ons some State College homeowners choose are an outdoor cover ($150) for exterior lifts exposed to Centre County snow, or an extended warranty beyond the standard 5-year motor coverage. We itemize everything on a single page before you sign.

Does Medicare cover stairlifts in Pennsylvania?

Original Medicare (Parts A and B) does not cover stairlifts — they're classified as home modifications, not durable medical equipment. However, Pennsylvania's Community HealthChoices (CHC) waiver through the Office of Long-Term Living can cover stairlifts as a home accessibility adaptation for eligible seniors who meet nursing-facility-level-of-care criteria. The PA Accessible Housing Program (PAHP) also provides grants for low- and moderate-income residents with disabilities. We help with the paperwork for both programs during your in-home assessment.

A word from Luis

I've been putting stairlifts into State College homes since 2009. The housing stock here is unlike anywhere else in central Pennsylvania — you have College Heights with National Register Colonials built for Penn State professors in the 1920s, then Park Forest split-levels from the 60s and 70s, then newer builds in Nittany Hills East. Each era brings its own stair geometry.

A straight rail in a College Heights Dutch Colonial goes in differently than one in a Vallamont two-story from the 1980s. I know which treads are oak, which are pine, which are carpeted-over hardwood before I walk through the door. That's what fifteen years in one town gives you.

The one thing I tell every family in Centre County: your house isn't generic, and your stairlift shouldn't be either. Whether you're up near Mount Nittany or over in Boalsburg, we measure every tread and every turn because a half-inch off is the difference between a lift that runs quiet for a decade and one that rattles from day one.

— Luis Ramírez, State College
Your Next Step

Ready to get started? It's simple.

State College isn't like most Pennsylvania towns its size. The university drives everything — the housing stock spans a century of architectural styles, the population turns over every four years with students, and the surrounding ridges mean homes are built into slopes that make single-story living rare. We've installed on Centre County staircases ranging from 1920s College Heights Colonials with original oak treads to 1990s Orchard Park townhomes with carpeted switchbacks.

If your stairs are keeping you from the upstairs bedroom or the basement laundry, call Luis at 814-867-5310. We'll come out to your home — whether you're two blocks from Beaver Stadium or out past Boalsburg — measure everything, and have your rail in within a week. No sales pitch, no high-pressure quote. Just a stairlift that fits your actual stairs.
