Our 1928 Tudor near Hampton Road has the original dark oak staircase. It's beautiful, but with a landing turn halfway up my mother couldn't manage anymore. Is a stairlift cheaper than remodeling for single-story living?
I can't quote a number without seeing the stairs, but the comparison holds up: retrofitting a 1920s or '30s hillside Piedmont house for single-story living, or adding a residential elevator, runs many times what it costs to fit a rail to the staircase that's already there, and it doesn't touch the original structure.
Can a stairlift be built for a curved staircase in an older Piedmont home?
Yes, it's the more common job around here, not the exception.
