Our Coverage Area

Stairlift Service Across Alameda County

Alameda County, CA

From the Craftsman bungalow belt of North Berkeley — where 1905–1925 brown-shingles line the streets between Shattuck and the hills, and the priority is always preserving original redwood banisters — to the Elmwood district south of campus, where the grandest pre-1920s homes sit on tree-lined blocks, our team has measured in every neighborhood. We know which Thousand Oaks hillside homes have steep exterior stone steps needing an outdoor rail before the interior staircase, which Claremont Tudors have the tight quarter-turn only a custom curved rail can handle, and which Panoramic Hill properties require extra-long outdoor runs past terraced gardens and retaining walls. Northbrae's postwar two-stories near the Albany border round out the coverage.

1911 North Berkeley brown-shingle — straight rail on original redwood treads

North Berkeley, CA Installed March 2026

A 1911 brown-shingle Craftsman on Eunice Street in North Berkeley — original redwood treads, a hand-cut redwood banister with hammered-copper hardware, and a homeowner who spent 40 years in the UC Berkeley English department. Mrs. Tanaka is 79 and had her right hip replaced at Alta Bates Summit four weeks before her daughter called us. We used wide-flange brackets rated for old-growth softwood and bolted the rail so the seat folds flat against the wall at the upper landing.

1926 Claremont Tudor — curved rail past the quarter-turn at the upper landing

Claremont, CA Installed February 2026

A 1926 Tudor Revival on a leafy Claremont street near the Claremont Hotel with a formal entry staircase that curves sharply at the upper landing — a quarter-turn past original plaster walls and a stained-glass window. We laser-scanned the staircase, fabricated a curved rail that threads the quarter-turn without touching the plaster or the window frame, and installed a swivel-exit seat so Dr. Rosenstein steps off onto the hallway carpet instead of the top tread.

1918 Elmwood bungalow — straight rail beside clinker-brick wall on Douglas fir treads

Elmwood, CA Installed January 2026

A 1918 bungalow in the Elmwood district with an interior staircase flanked by a clinker-brick half-wall and original lath-and-plaster — cottage-style construction Berkeley builders favored in the 1910s. The treads are original Douglas fir, softer than oak and prone to splitting under standard brackets. We used wide-flange mounts that distribute the load and bolted the rail so it clears the clinker-brick wall by three inches. Mr. Patel watched every bolt go in.

Outdoor

Thousand Oaks hillside — weather-sealed outdoor rail on stone paving steps

Thousand Oaks, CA Installed December 2025

A 1929 Mediterranean Revival on a Thousand Oaks hillside with 18 exterior stone-paved steps from the street up to the front entry — the kind of approach that becomes dangerous when steps are wet from fog. Mrs. Chen had been entering through the garage for two years to avoid the front steps. We installed a weather-sealed outdoor rail on the stone steps with stainless fasteners rated for coastal salt-air corrosion, sealed the motor housing to IP55, and added a rain cover for the parked seat.

Northbrae carpeted stairs — straight rail installed before knee surgery

Northbrae, CA Installed November 2025

A 1962 two-story near the Albany border in Northbrae with fully carpeted stairs — the wall-to-wall broadloom standard in postwar Berkeley construction. Mrs. Goldberg scheduled a knee replacement at Kaiser Oakland and her daughter wanted the lift working before she came home. The carpet required through-bolting into the subfloor beneath the pad — we pulled back the carpet at each bracket point, drilled through, and re-tucked. She rode the lift from the front entry to her upstairs bedroom seven days after surgery.

Platform Lift

West Berkeley Victorian — indoor wheelchair platform lift between floors

West Berkeley, CA Installed October 2025

A 1905 Victorian in West Berkeley where Mr. Jackson, 71, uses a power wheelchair full-time after a stroke. A seated stairlift was not an option — he needed to ride between floors in his chair. We installed an inclined wheelchair platform lift with a flat black anti-slip platform and yellow high-visibility safety edges along the perimeter. The unit runs on a track mounted to the stairwell wall and carries the wheelchair and occupant between the main floor and upper bedrooms. The yellow edge strips are pressure-sensitive safety sensors that stop the platform instantly on contact.

Common Questions

Everything Berkeley Homeowners Actually Ask

Straight answers about cost, installation, and funding — no sales fluff. Browse by topic or call us if you have a question that isn't here.

What does a stairlift cost in Berkeley right now?

Straight rails in standard Berkeley homes — the North Berkeley Craftsman bungalows, the Elmwood brown-shingles, the flatland foursquares west of Shattuck — run $2,800 to $5,500 installed. Curved rails for the Claremont Tudor quarter-turns, Thousand Oaks hillside multi-landings, and Panoramic Hill split-levels run $9,000 to $15,000 because the rail is manufactured to your exact staircase geometry. Outdoor weather-sealed models for the exterior hillside stairs that Berkeley is known for run $4,000 to $7,500. Every quote is written, honored for 30 days, and includes installation, rail, seat, battery backup, and the first service visit.

Are prices different in Berkeley than Oakland or other East Bay cities?

Equipment prices are the same across Alameda County — we don't inflate quotes for Elmwood or Claremont addresses. What can add cost is unusual conditions: the extra-long outdoor rail runs on Panoramic Hill or upper Thousand Oaks (sometimes 20+ exterior steps), seismic bracket upgrades for soft-story buildings, or a new dedicated circuit in a pre-1920 home with original knob-and-tube wiring. We tell you the line items upfront.

Does Medi-Cal cover any of the cost?

Yes, through the Home and Community-Based Alternatives Waiver (HCBA). Stairlifts qualify as Environmental Accessibility Adaptations. Eligibility requires California residency, Medi-Cal financial qualification, and an assessment at nursing-facility level of care through your regional HCBA waiver agency. We coordinate with the Alameda County agency and handle the EAA paperwork on your behalf. In-Home Supportive Services (IHSS) through Alameda County Social Services often triggers the referral — call 510-577-3530 to start the intake.

Is a used or refurbished stairlift a good option for a Berkeley home?

A factory-refurbished straight rail can save 30–40% over new — typically $1,800 to $3,200 installed for a standard Berkeley Craftsman staircase. We inspect, re-certify, and warranty refurbished units the same as new: 3 years parts, lifetime rail. Curved rails are almost never available refurbished because every curved rail is custom-fabricated to a specific staircase. If your stairs are a clean straight run (most North Berkeley bungalows and Elmwood two-stories qualify), ask about refurbished options during the free assessment.

A word from Luis

Most Berkeley families call me after a near-miss on the stairs — a slip on the steep Craftsman treads in a 1908 North Berkeley brown-shingle, a parent who hasn't been upstairs in weeks after a knee replacement at Alta Bates, a daughter in New York worried about her mother in a Claremont Tudor she's lived in for 45 years.

My job is simple: drive to your house within 24 hours, measure once, and give you a price that's honored for 30 days. No pressure. No upsells. En español si lo prefiere.
