Stairlift Service Across Middlesex County

Middlesex County, MA

From the grand Colonials and Tudors of Chestnut Hill — where homes average $2.6M and the historic district commission reviews any exterior modification — to the Victorian streetscapes of West Newton Hill with two National Register historic districts and banisters older than the electrical code, our crew has mapped every village. We know which Newtonville and Newton Corner two-families have the steep back stairs that need a second rail for the in-law unit, which Waban and Oak Hill ranches have the split-level landing that demands a curved track, and which Auburndale and Newton Lower Falls cottages sit on slopes where an outdoor porch lift handles the grade change from driveway to front door.

Because Newton sits at the junction of I-90 and Route 128, we also cover Watertown, Brookline, Needham, Waltham, Wellesley, and Belmont from the same crew — no scheduling delays, no travel surcharges.

Chestnut Hill Colonial — straight rail on original oak treads, banister untouched

Chestnut Hill, MA Installed March 2026

A 1928 Colonial Revival on Hammond Street with wide oak treads, a mahogany banister, and an Oriental runner the family brought back from Istanbul in 1971. Mrs. Whitfield's daughter in San Francisco had been calling every week asking about the stairs — her mother had a partial knee replacement in January and was using the powder room on the first floor rather than climb to the master bath. We measured on a Wednesday morning, confirmed the stair width at 36 inches (plenty of clearance with the chair folded), and bolted a straight rail into the oak treads along the wall side. The banister, the runner, and every spindle stayed exactly where they have been for 96 years. The rail color was matched to the existing oak grain — Mrs. Whitfield's garden club walked past it twice before anyone noticed. Her daughter stopped calling about the stairs.

Curved

West Newton Hill Victorian — curved rail with 90° turn at the upper landing

West Newton, MA Installed February 2026

An 1894 Queen Anne Victorian on Cherry Street in the West Newton Hill Historic District. The staircase rises from the front hall, turns 90 degrees at an upper landing, and delivers you to a second-floor hallway barely 30 inches wide. Two other companies told the Sorensens they would need two separate lifts — one for each run. We laser-scanned the full geometry during the first visit, fabricated a single continuous curved rail that carries Mrs. Sorensen from the front hall to the bedroom hallway in one ride, and added a swivel-exit seat at the top so she steps off onto the hallway floor instead of the top tread. The turned-spindle banister — original to 1894 — was never touched. Every bolt went into the tread, not the wall, not the plaster, not the century-old millwork.

Newton Lower Falls stone cottage — straight rail on fieldstone-walled stairway

Newton Lower Falls, MA Installed January 2026

A 1935 fieldstone cottage near the Charles River with an enclosed stairway flanked by exposed stone on one side and plaster on the other. The stone wall ruled out any wall-mounted bracket — every mount had to go into the treads. The treads themselves were original pine, solid but uneven after 90 years of foot traffic and foundation settling along the riverbank. We shimmed the rail brackets at three points to keep the ride dead level from bottom to top. Mr. Petrakis is a retired civil engineer and checked our measurements with his own level before we left. He confirmed: dead level. The stone character of the stairway is completely preserved — the rail hugs the tread side opposite the stone and folds flat against the wall when not in use.

Outdoor

Newton Highlands raised entry — outdoor lift on bluestone paving

Newton Highlands, MA Installed December 2025

A 1940s Cape on Lincoln Street with a raised front entry — seven bluestone steps from the walkway to the covered porch. Mr. Maguire uses a walker after a stroke and could not clear the entry without his wife lifting him step by step. A ramp was geometrically impossible without extending 20 feet into the front yard. We anchored an outdoor straight rail directly into the bluestone risers, sealed every bracket against New England freeze-thaw cycling, and installed a weather cover that protects the seat and controls from snow load and the salt mist that drifts inland from the Mass Pike. The lift runs on sealed batteries rated for Massachusetts winters down to -15°F. Mr. Maguire rolls his walker onto the porch, rides down to the walkway, and gets to the car without a single step. His wife stopped canceling doctor appointments.

Waban Cape Cod — straight rail on carpeted stairs, same-day install

Waban, MA Installed November 2025

A 1952 Cape Cod on Woodward Street — the kind of house Newton built by the hundreds in the postwar boom. Carpeted stairs, 34 inches wide, straight run from the living room to three upstairs bedrooms. Mrs. Chen's orthopedist at Newton-Wellesley Hospital told her she needed to stop climbing stairs after a second compression fracture in her lower spine. Her son called us on a Tuesday, we measured Wednesday morning, and installed Thursday afternoon. The rail bolts through the carpet into the stair treads beneath — no carpet removal, no re-stretching, no visible damage. The chair folds flush against the wall at the bottom so the grandchildren still run up and down without ducking. Mrs. Chen rides it eight times a day and has not missed a single night in her own bedroom since installation.

Platform Lift

Newtonville two-family — indoor wheelchair platform lift between floors

Newtonville, MA Installed October 2025

A 1920s two-family on Walnut Street where the Adamians live on the first floor and their adult son lives upstairs. Mr. Adamian is a full-time wheelchair user after a spinal cord injury — a seated stairlift was never an option. We installed an indoor vertical platform lift with yellow safety edges along the platform perimeter and an interlocking gate system at both levels. The lift carries Mr. Adamian and his chair from the first-floor hallway to the second-floor landing in about 40 seconds. The platform is rated for 750 lbs, runs on standard 110V household current, and has a manual lowering valve for power outages. The yellow edge markings meet ADA visibility standards and double as a tactile warning strip. Mr. Adamian visits his son upstairs for dinner three nights a week now — something he had not done in two years.

Common Questions

Everything Newton Homeowners Actually Ask

Straight answers about cost, installation, and funding — no sales fluff. Browse by topic or call us if you have a question that isn't here.

What does a stairlift cost in Newton right now?

Straight rails in standard Newton homes — the Capes in Waban, the Colonials in Chestnut Hill, the two-families in Newtonville — run $2,800 to $5,500 installed. Curved rails, which you will need for most West Newton Hill Victorians, Auburndale split-levels, and any staircase with a 90° landing turn, run $9,000 to $15,000 because the rail is manufactured to your exact staircase geometry. Outdoor models for raised porches and bluestone entries run $4,000 to $7,500. Every quote is written, honored for 30 days, and includes installation, rail, seat, battery backup, and the first service visit.

Are prices higher in Chestnut Hill or West Newton Hill because of the historic homes?

Equipment prices are identical across all 13 villages — we do not inflate quotes for Chestnut Hill addresses. What can add cost is unusual install conditions: a curved rail for a Victorian landing turn, extra shimming for foundation-settled treads in pre-war homes, or the rare case where we need to run a dedicated circuit in a house with original 60-amp service. We itemize every line. No village premium.

Does the MassHealth Frail Elder Waiver cover the full cost?

It can. The waiver classifies stairlifts as home accessibility adaptations with a lifetime cap of roughly $10,000 — enough to cover a straight rail and most curved rails. Eligibility requires Massachusetts residency, age 60+, MassHealth Standard qualification, and nursing-facility level of care as assessed by Springwell, Newton's designated ASAP. Call MassOptions at 1-800-243-4636 to start the assessment, name All American as your home modification vendor, and Springwell handles the rest. Typical timeline from assessment to installation: 14-30 days.

Can I deduct the stairlift on my Massachusetts taxes?

If a licensed physician recommends the stairlift in writing (we provide the letter template), the IRS classifies it as a qualified medical expense under Schedule A. Massachusetts conforms to the federal treatment on state returns. For households that itemize, the full installation cost reduces taxable income. In Newton's tax bracket, that is typically worth $700-$2,800 back depending on your filing status. You must itemize rather than take the standard deduction. We walk you through whether itemizing makes sense during the free assessment.

A word from Luis

Most Newton families call after something specific — a parent gripping the banister in a Chestnut Hill Colonial because the oak treads got slippery after waxing, a retired professor in Newton Centre who moved his office to the dining room because he stopped climbing to the study six months ago, a daughter in California who found out her 84-year-old father in Waban has been sleeping on the couch rather than face the stairs.

My job is simple: drive to your house within 24 hours, measure once, and give you a price that's honored for 30 days. No pressure. No upsells. En español si lo prefiere.
