Straight Stairlift

The workhorse of Brookline's two-families, pre-war condos, and Coolidge Corner walkups.

Over 65% of the stairlifts we install in Brookline are straight rails. A single run, the rail bolts to your stair treads (never into the wall, never into that 1893 oak banister), the seat and footrest fold up out of the way so tenants and family members can pass on a narrow two-family staircase, and the cold-pack battery backup keeps you moving through the next Nor'easter power outage. Most Brookline installs wrap in under four hours.

Starting at $3,250 installed

What's Included

  • Battery backup for power outages
  • Swivel seat with safety lock
  • Two wireless remote controls
  • Soft start and soft stop motion
  • Fold-up seat, arms, and footrest
  • 10-year motor & gearbox warranty

Compared to Alternatives

vs Curved: 3x less expensive and installed in one visit. vs Home elevator: 10-15x less cost and no construction. vs Moving bedroom downstairs: Keeps your home exactly as it is.

Stairlift Service Across Norfolk County

Norfolk County, MA

From the Queen Anne Victorians on Francis Street and Walnut Street in Brookline Village — where original carved banisters and turned spindles mean the rail has to thread past 1880s millwork without touching a single surface — to the Colonial Revivals and Tudors on Fisher Hill and Pill Hill where curved rails navigate 90-degree upper landings in homes built for families, not for the parents still living in them fifty years later, our team has mapped every pocket of Brookline's housing stock. We know which Coolidge Corner two-families have the 33-inch-wide stairs that need our slimmest-profile rail, which Beacon Street condo buildings already have our trustee-accommodation template on file, which Chestnut Hill estates need the longer curved rail run that carries you from the front hall to the upper landing in one continuous ride, and which Washington Square pre-war apartments have the original service staircase that's actually easier to install on than the formal front stair.

Because Brookline sits inside the Greater Boston coverage ring, we also serve Newton, Watertown, Cambridge, Somerville, and Belmont from the same team — so a Brookline consult doesn't wait on a tech driving in from the South Shore.

1924 Pill Hill Colonial — curved rail past a 90-degree upper landing

Pill Hill, MA Installed March 2026

A 1924 Colonial Revival on one of the tree-lined streets inside the Pill Hill historic district, with a formal staircase that turns 90 degrees at the upper landing. Mrs. Whitfield had been sleeping on the first-floor den sofa since Thanksgiving after a fall on the upper landing — her daughter in New York found us online and called on a Wednesday. We laser-scanned the staircase during the first visit, confirmed the interior install needs no Brookline Preservation Commission filing, fabricated a curved rail that carries her from the front hall to the upper bedroom corridor in one continuous ride, and added a swivel-exit seat so she steps off onto the hallway floor instead of the top tread. Her daughter flew in for the install and cried when her mother rode it upstairs for the first time in four months.

Coolidge Corner two-family — slim-profile rail on a 33-inch-wide stair

Coolidge Corner, MA Installed February 2026

A 1910 two-family on a side street off Harvard Street where Mrs. Petrov has lived on the second floor since 1978. The original oak staircase measures 33 inches between the wall and the banister — the upstairs tenant needed to pass with groceries. We spec'd our slimmest-profile rail, bolted into the oak treads without touching a single spindle, and positioned the folding seat so it sits flush against the wall at the upper landing. The upstairs tenant walked past it on move-in day with two bags of groceries and said he barely noticed it. Mrs. Petrov hasn't missed a morning walk to the Coolidge Corner shops since.

Beacon Street brownstone conversion — curved rail through a condo stairwell

Beacon Street corridor, MA Installed January 2026

An 1888 Beacon Street brownstone subdivided into four condos in the 1980s but still carrying the original mahogany staircase from the front hall to the third floor. Dr. Kaplan's unit is on the second level — 18 steps from the entry with a gentle curve at the mid-landing. The condo trustees required an accommodation packet before any work could begin. We submitted the Fair Housing accommodation request, the insurance certificate, the HIC registration, and a detailed installation drawing on a Friday — the trustees approved the following Thursday. The curved rail threads past the original mahogany newel without contact and parks flush against the wall at the upper landing. The building has four units. Three of the other owners have since asked for our card.

1893 Brookline Village Queen Anne — rail color-matched to the original oak

Brookline Village, MA Installed December 2025

A three-story Queen Anne Victorian on a side street off Washington Street with the original quarter-sawn oak banister, turned spindles, and a carved newel post at the base of the stair. Mr. Hogan is 88 and still mows his own lawn — but the stairs had become a twice-daily negotiation with gravity after a knee replacement at Beth Israel Deaconess. We brought oak finish samples to the first visit, matched the rail hardware color to the grain, and mounted the track into the treads only. The newel post, spindles, and wallpaper are untouched. His neighbor on the historical society walked through the front hall the following week and didn't notice the lift until Mr. Hogan pointed it out from the landing.

Chestnut Hill estate — wide stairs, quiet motor, same-week install

Chestnut Hill, MA Installed November 2025

A 1938 Georgian Revival in Chestnut Hill with a wide formal staircase, plaster walls, and an Oriental runner that the family was clear must not be disturbed. Mr. Rearden's son arranged the assessment remotely from California and joined the walkthrough on FaceTime. The staircase was generous — 42 inches wide, 15 treads, no turns — the kind of install that goes fast. We bolted the rail along the outer edge of the runner without moving or cutting a single inch of carpet, spec'd the quiet-motor option so it doesn't interrupt the den below, and had Mr. Rearden riding by Thursday afternoon. His son said he slept through the night for the first time in weeks.

Platform Lift

Washington Square — outdoor stoop lift on salt-pitted granite steps

Washington Square, MA Installed October 2025

A 1915 single-family near Washington Square with a raised front entry, six salt-pitted granite steps, and a history of black ice every winter that had sent Mrs. Sullivan to the ER twice in three years. Her primary concern wasn't the interior stairs — it was getting from the sidewalk to the front door between November and April. We installed a weather-sealed outdoor rail with marine-grade coating against New England salt, a cold-pack battery rated to -10°F, and a non-slip aluminum footplate that doesn't ice over the way granite does. It ran through the entire 2025-2026 winter without a service call. Mrs. Sullivan walked to the Brookline Booksmith in January for the first time in two years.

Common Questions

Everything Brookline Homeowners Actually Ask

Straight answers about cost, installation, and funding — no sales fluff. Browse by topic or call us if you have a question that isn't here.

What does a stairlift cost in Brookline right now?

Straight rails in standard Brookline homes — a Coolidge Corner two-family, a Brookline Village duplex, a Washington Square pre-war apartment — run $2,900 to $5,800 installed. Curved rails, which you'll need for most Pill Hill and Fisher Hill Colonials with upper landings, and for the Beacon Street brownstone conversions with their formal staircases, run $9,500 to $16,000 because the rail is fabricated to your exact staircase geometry. Outdoor stoop lifts for raised granite entries run $4,200 to $7,800 with the cold-weather battery pack standard. Every quote is written, honored for 30 days, and includes installation, rail, seat, battery backup, and the first service visit.

Are prices different in Brookline than in Boston or Newton?

Equipment prices are the same across Greater Boston — we don't inflate quotes for Chestnut Hill or Fisher Hill addresses. What varies slightly is install labor for unusual conditions: condo-trustee filings along Beacon Street and Harvard Street, threading past original Victorian millwork in Brookline Village, and cold-weather scheduling when a Nor'easter moves an install window. We spell out every line item upfront. No surprise "Brookline premiums."

My Beacon Street condo charges an assessment for any building modification. Is that normal?

Common, but negotiable. Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 151B and the federal Fair Housing Act require condo trustees to grant reasonable accommodations for residents with documented disabilities — and a stairlift is about as reasonable as it gets. We've worked with over 30 Brookline condo buildings and have trustee-accommodation packets already templated for many of the Beacon Street and Harvard Street addresses. If a board charges a building assessment or asks for an engineer's letter, we tell you upfront and prepare the paperwork at no charge.

Do you charge extra for a bilingual consultation?

No. Every Brookline assessment can be conducted in Spanish at your request — Luis is bilingual and has worked consultations across the Greater Boston metro for over a decade. Every printed quote, consent form, and operating manual is available in Spanish at no additional cost. For Russian, Mandarin, and other languages spoken in Brookline's diverse community, we bring in a phone interpreter at our cost — never yours.

A word from Luis

Most Brookline calls come from the same pattern — a daughter in New York who just learned her mother hasn't been upstairs in the Coolidge Corner two-family since the last ice storm, or a couple in a Fisher Hill Colonial who realized the master bedroom stairs aren't getting any shorter after a knee replacement at Beth Israel Deaconess.

My job is simple: drive to your house within 24 hours, measure once, and give you a price that's honored for 30 days. No pressure. No upsells. En español si lo prefiere.
