Will the rail damage my hardwood treads?

No. The rail bolts to the treads, not to the drywall. On the original oak treads still common in older Cold Water Creek homes we use stainless tread-mount fasteners that leave only small holes, easily filled if the lift is ever removed.

Can my husband still walk up the stairs?

Those are nearly always one straight run from the foyer to the second floor: a 14-foot rail, four hours, you're using your bedroom again that afternoon.
