Most of Green's split-level homes, built when farmland here turned into subdivisions around 1950, have a landing partway up the stairs that needs a custom-fit rail, not a straight piece off the shelf. That's often what keeps someone in the house, especially with one resident in five here 65 or older; send a photo of your staircase and I'll tell you what yours needs.

Hear It From Your Green Neighbors
Common situations we get called out for across Green's neighborhoods. Drag to scroll, or use the arrows and dots below.
Standard ranch in Greensburg, standard straight rail. Luis quoted $3,100 with no add-ons, came in at $3,100, and the install took three and a half hours. The team rolled out a runner over the carpet, vacuumed when they were done, and walked through the controls twice with my mother. She was riding by lunchtime.
Curved rail for our Massillon Road split-level. The 90° turn at the upper landing was tight: the rail clears the dining room wall trim by exactly an inch. Luis measured three times and the rail dropped in clean. Five weeks from quote to first ride. Worth every day of the wait.
We had a 2008 walk-out basement in Aultman that needed an outdoor lift to the patio. Luis spec'd IP55 sealing because we're an hour from Lake Erie and lake-effect blows in hard here. Two winters in, the motor housing still looks new. The battery held through a February outage without a hiccup.
PASSPORT covered most of the cost. Luis filed the paperwork with Direction Home and the install was scheduled five weeks later. Heavy-duty rail because my husband is 6'2". Battery backup ran the lift through a February power outage that lasted 13 hours. The whole process was handled without us making a single call to Medicaid.
Carpeted treads in our 1995 Boettler Park colonial. Luis color-matched the seat upholstery to the carpet runner so the lift looks like it belongs. The team protected the tile foyer floor with corrugated mats during install. Detail work I did not expect. No mess, no scratches anywhere.
Indoor wheelchair platform for our daughter-in-law in East Liberty. Flat deck, yellow safety edges along the platform, white handrail on the wall side. Luis fitted the rail to our 1985 split without modifying the wall framing. Ohio PASSPORT paid most of it. From call to install was under six weeks.

We install across Green's five historic hamlets: Greensburg, Aultman, Myersville, East Liberty, and Comet, each with its own housing pattern. Greensburg ranches off Mayfair Road have wider mid-century treads ideal for a standard straight rail. The newer subdivisions off Massillon Road and Boettler Park tend toward 1990s and 2000s split-levels with 90° landings, curved-rail territory. Kings Ridge and Arlington Ridge have walk-out basements that need outdoor units rated for lake-effect snow loads. Hyde Park Estates off Massillon has the larger custom builds where we spec reinforced heavy-duty rails. Freeze-thaw protection with battery backup is standard on every outdoor install.

Everything Green Homeowners Actually Ask
Straight answers about cost, installation, and funding, no sales fluff. Browse by topic or call us if you have a question that isn't here.
How much does a stairlift cost in Green?
It comes down to whether your staircase is a straight run or has a landing. A lot of the split-level homes built after the 1950s farm-to-subdivision shift have a switchback staircase, which needs a curved or custom rail and runs higher than a straight-rail lift in a two-story ranch. Get an in-home measurement before trusting a number quoted over the phone; the layout changes the price more than almost anything else.
Does Medicare or private insurance pay for any of it?
No. Traditional Medicare and most private insurance don't cover stairlifts. In Summit County the realistic paths are the Medicaid waivers listed below, the county's home repair program, or paying out of pocket. If you're a veteran, note that the VA's HISA grant specifically excludes stair glides, so that program won't fund the lift itself.
Is a curved staircase more expensive than a straight one?
Yes, and by a meaningful margin. Straight staircases, common in Green's newer construction, take a standard rail. Curved or multi-landing stairs, which show up often in the older subdivisions and in split-levels from the farmland-boom era, need a rail custom-built to that exact staircase, which adds both cost and lead time.
How long does installation actually take?
Most straight-rail jobs in Green are finished in a few hours, same day. Curved-rail installs take longer, because the rail is fabricated off a template of your actual staircase rather than pulled off a shelf. Expect that more often in the split-level homes from the older subdivisions.
Will a stairlift damage my staircase?
No. The rail mounts to the treads of the stairs, not the wall, so it works on the older staircases common in homes built during Green's mid-century subdivision boom without any structural changes.
Do I need an electrician before the install?
Usually not. Stairlifts run on a standard household outlet near the base or top of the stairs. If your home is one of the older ones from that farmland-to-subdivision era and doesn't have an outlet within reach of the staircase, we'll catch that during the in-home assessment before the install date, not after.
What funding is available for a stairlift in Summit County?
If you're 60 or older and need nursing-home-level care to stay safe at home, Ohio's PASSPORT Medicaid waiver covers home modifications including stairlifts, administered locally through Direction Home Akron Canton Area Agency on Aging and Disabilities. There's no fixed per-service dollar cap; it's set by your approved care plan. Call 1-866-243-5678 for the local PASSPORT office or 1-800-266-4346 for the Ohio Department of Aging.
I'm under 60 with a disability. Is there anything for me?
The Ohio Home Care Waiver is the equivalent program for Summit County residents under 60 with a physical disability, also covering home modifications with no fixed cap, funded per your approved plan. Direction Home's Staying Home Program (877-770-5558) does the free in-home assessment and connects you to it.
What about the county rehab program or VA benefits?
Summit County's Housing Rehabilitation Program, through the Dept. of Community and Economic Development, offers 0% interest deferred forgivable loans and lists "ADA Modifications" as an eligible repair category. Call 330-643-2537. For veterans, be careful: the VA's HISA grant ($6,800 for a service-connected disability, $2,000 otherwise) explicitly excludes stair glides by name, so that money goes toward ramps or bathroom work instead. A stairlift for a veteran usually has to go through VA Prosthetics as a medically prescribed item, which carries no set dollar cap.

I've run installs on both ends of Green, near the school district buildings and out toward the quieter lots by Singer Lake Bog. What surprises people is how spread out this city is for its size; a house on one side can have a completely different staircase than one a few miles away. The split-level homes from the old farm-to-subdivision era usually have a landing partway up, which needs a custom-fit rail, not a straight piece off the shelf. That's the first thing I check before I quote a job here.
Ready to get started? It's simple.
Green homeowners stay put because the city was built that way: single-floor ranches, walkable hamlets, and 30 minutes from both Akron and Canton. A stairlift here just keeps the second floor in play.
We measure free, factor in Summit County winters, and quote in writing. Same-week scheduling for veterans through the Summit County VA Clinic at 111 East Voris Street, Akron, and for PASSPORT-enrolled seniors through Direction Home.
