How much does a stairlift cost for a typical Massillon home?

Will putting in a stairlift damage the stairs or walls?
No, the rail mounts to the stair treads, not the wall, which matters in a lot of Massillon's older houses where the plaster doesn't hold anchors well anyway. With over 13,625 households in the city and a solid share of pre-1960s construction, that question comes up constantly, and it's one of the reasons a stairlift stays the least invasive fix compared to widening a stairwell or building an addition.
Does the Stark County Housing Rehab Program cover a stairlift for a Massillon address?
This is the one people get tripped up on. The county's CDBG/HOME-funded Housing Rehab Program caps projects at $25,000, but Massillon is specifically excluded from its service area, along with Canton, Alliance, Hills & Dales, and Wilmot, so a Massillon street address doesn't qualify no matter your income. Call the Stark County Regional Planning Commission Housing Rehab Office at 330-451-7399 to confirm the current boundaries before you assume you're covered.
What about the City of Canton's Silver Safety Home Repair grant, can Massillon residents apply?
No. It's restricted to City of Canton residency only: a $5,000 lifetime, three-year declining-lien grant for ramps, grab bars, and step repair, administered by Canton for Canton addresses. Massillon homeowners aren't eligible, so don't waste time applying if your address is here.
What funding is actually available to a Massillon homeowner age 60 or older?
PASSPORT, Ohio's Medicaid HCBS waiver, is the strongest option for residents 60-plus who need a nursing-home level of care. It's administered locally through Direction Home Akron Canton (877-770-5558) and funds home modifications under an individualized care plan with no fixed dollar cap, though stairlifts aren't itemized on their published service list, so ask your care manager directly whether one fits your plan. Veterans should check with the VA too: the HISA grant explicitly excludes stair glides from its $6,800/$2,000 caps, but VA Prosthetic and Sensory Aids can prescribe a stairlift outright with no set dollar limit when it's medically justified. The Stark County Veterans Service Commission (330-451-7457) is a good first call to sort out which VA path applies.
