Straight Stairlift

The workhorse of Gary's bungalows, ranches, and Calumet Region mid-century homes.

Over 70% of the stairlifts we install across Gary are a single straight run — the narrow basement stairs in a Glen Park bungalow, the second-floor climb in an Ambridge Mann prairie home, the finished-basement run in a Tolleston ranch. The rail bolts to your stair treads (never into the plaster or the wainscoting), the seat and footrest fold up out of the way, and the cold-weather LiFePO4 battery backup keeps you moving through the next lake-effect power outage. Most bungalow installs wrap in three hours.

Starting at $2,400 installed

What's Included

  • Battery backup for power outages
  • Swivel seat with safety lock
  • Two wireless remote controls
  • Soft start and soft stop motion
  • Fold-up seat, arms, and footrest
  • 10-year motor & gearbox warranty

Compared to Alternatives

vs Curved: 3x less expensive and installed in one visit. vs Home elevator: 10-15x less cost and no construction. vs Moving bedroom downstairs: Keeps your home exactly as it is.

Stairlift Service Across Lake County

Lake County, IN

From the 1910s prairie-style homes of Ambridge Mann — original wood treads, art deco millwork, interior stairs walked on for a century — to the mid-century ranches of Glen Park where steep basement stairs and raised front entries are the two most common install calls. Miller Beach split-levels almost always have a mid-landing turn requiring a curved rail, plus lake-proximity corrosion that demands stainless hardware. Tolleston is the 1940s-1960s ranch belt with the same builder patterns from Highland to Griffith. Midtown, centered on Broadway, has the oldest occupied housing and the steepest, narrowest stairs in Lake County.

We also cover Hammond, East Chicago, Whiting, Highland, Griffith, Hobart, Lake Station, and Merrillville at the same rate — no travel surcharges, no state-line fees for Chicago families calling for a parent across the border.

1949 Glen Park bungalow — compact rail down the narrow basement stairs

Glen Park, IN Installed March 2026

A 1949 bungalow in Glen Park with a finished basement and a narrow staircase — 30 inches wide, 12 steep treads, original wood over concrete. Mr. Robinson's television room and recliner are in the basement and he refused to move them upstairs after his knee replacement at Methodist Hospital Northlake. We installed the compact rail with the full folding package — seat, footrest, armrests all tuck flat against the wall. Clear stair width with the lift parked is 23 inches, enough for Mrs. Robinson to walk past carrying laundry. He rides it down every morning and back up before dinner. Three-hour install, done before noon.

Miller Beach split-level — single curved rail over the 90° landing

Miller Beach, IN Installed February 2026

A 1958 split-level in Miller Beach — five steps from the entry to the living level, a 90-degree landing, then eight more to the bedrooms. Mrs. Harris's mother moved in after a stroke and the family needed a lift that handled the full run without a transfer at the landing. Two other companies said it would take two separate lifts. We laser-scanned the staircase, fabricated a single continuous curved rail, and installed a swivel-exit seat at the upper landing so she steps off onto the hallway floor. The family can hear the Dunes surf from the bedroom window. One ride, zero transfers, zero service calls since February.

1918 Ambridge Mann prairie-style — rail preserving original millwork

Ambridge Mann, IN Installed January 2026

A 1918 prairie-style home in Ambridge Mann — one of the homes built for American Bridge Works employees when U.S. Steel was building the city from scratch. Original oak stair treads, art deco millwork on the second-floor landing, plaster walls, and a homeowner who has lived in the house since 1969 and made it clear that no one was drilling into the original woodwork. We bolted the rail into the treads only, color-matched the finish to the dark oak grain, and parked the chair flush against the wall at the bottom landing. Mrs. Jackson's church group from St. Augustine's visits every Wednesday and nobody has said a word about the lift.

Tolleston raised entry — weather-sealed outdoor lift through a Lake Michigan winter

Tolleston, IN Installed December 2025

A 1951 ranch home in Tolleston with seven exterior concrete steps up to a raised front entry that ices over every year by late November. Mr. Williams is a Vietnam veteran who qualified for an HISA grant through the Jesse Brown VA Medical Center in Chicago — we prefilled VA Form 10-0103 and the prescription came back in four weeks through the Gary Area Vet Center. The outdoor lift is sealed against the lake-effect moisture, cold-rated to -20°F, and anchored with stainless hardware that resists the road-salt spray from Grant Street that chews through standard fasteners in two winters. It ran through the entire season — including a lake-effect event that dropped a foot of snow overnight — without a service call.

Carpeted stairs in a Midtown two-story — brown seat matching the warm carpet tones

Midtown, IN Installed November 2025

A 1930s two-story on Broadway in Midtown with 14 carpeted treads rising from a tiled entry hall to the upstairs bedrooms. Mrs. Davis's husband passed last year and she needed a way to reach the second floor without help from her daughter across town. We bolted the rail through the carpet into the stair treads, mounted the brown-upholstered seat that blends with the warm carpet tones, and set the swivel-exit at the upper landing so she steps onto the hallway carpet — not the top step. The rail runs cleanly along the carpeted treads. She's been sleeping in her own bedroom every night since install.

Platform Lift

Indoor wheelchair platform lift with yellow safety edges in a Brunswick ranch

Brunswick, IN Installed October 2025

Mr. Morales uses a power wheelchair after a spinal injury and cannot transfer to a seated stairlift. His Brunswick ranch has an indoor stairway between the main floor and a raised bedroom wing added in the 1970s. We installed an inclined wheelchair platform lift with a flat black anti-slip deck and yellow high-visibility safety edges on all four sides. The platform folds flat against the wall when not in use so the family can walk the stairs freely. Luis conducted the entire consultation and training in Spanish — twice, at Sra. Morales's request. The Indiana A&D Waiver covered most of the cost through the Northwest Indiana Area Agency on Aging.

Common Questions

Everything Gary Homeowners Actually Ask

Straight answers about cost, installation, and funding — no sales fluff. Browse by topic or call us if you have a question that isn't here.

What does a stairlift actually cost in Gary right now?

Straight rails in standard Gary homes — the Glen Park bungalows, the Tolleston ranches, the Miller Beach Cape Cods — run $2,800 to $5,500 installed. That includes the cold-weather LiFePO4 battery and 72-hour backup capacity that is standard on every Lake County install. Curved rails for Miller Beach split-levels and Midtown homes with landing turns run $9,000 to $15,000 because the rail is manufactured to your exact staircase geometry. Outdoor weather-sealed models for the concrete stoops and raised entries that ice over every winter run $4,000 to $7,500. Every quote is written, honored for 30 days, and includes installation, rail, seat, cold-weather battery, and the first service visit.

Are Gary prices different from Hammond, Highland, or the south suburbs?

Equipment prices are identical across the Calumet Region — we don't adjust quotes based on zip code, and we don't charge a state-line premium for families in Chicago calling on behalf of a parent in Gary. What varies slightly is labor when we encounter unusual conditions: foundation-settled treads in pre-1940 Ambridge Mann and Midtown homes, dedicated-circuit electrical work in homes with original 60-amp panels, or multi-point anchoring on concrete stoops where the top tread has frost-heaved. Every line item goes on the written quote before you sign.

Do you charge extra for Spanish-language service?

No. Every Gary assessment can be conducted in Spanish at your request — Luis is bilingual and has walked families in Gary, Hammond, and East Chicago through the entire process in their preferred language. Printed quotes, consent forms, and operating manuals are available in Spanish. Zero surcharge.

Is there a way to bring the cost below $3,000?

For straight-rail installs, yes — by combining funding sources. The Indiana A&D Waiver covers stairlifts up to a $15,000 lifetime cap. The VA HISA grant covers up to $6,800 for service-connected veterans. The IRS medical deduction returns $500-$2,200 depending on your bracket. Many Gary families pay nothing out of pocket after combining one or two of these programs. We walk through the math during the free assessment and tell you exactly which programs you qualify for before you spend a dollar.

A word from Luis

Most Gary families call after a winter when the lake-effect snow turned the front steps into a skating rink — a fall on the concrete stoop of a 1940s Glen Park bungalow, a father in Tolleston who stopped going downstairs in October and hasn't been back since, a daughter on the South Side of Chicago worried about her mother alone in a Miller Beach cottage she's lived in since 1962.

My job is simple: drive to your house within 24 hours, measure once, and give you a price that's honored for 30 days. No pressure. No upsells. En español si lo prefiere.
