Expert Stairlift Installation in Garfield, NJ

Garfield packs about 32,500 people into just over two square miles, making it one of the more tightly built cities in Bergen County, and a lot of that housing dates back to when the Forstmann Woolen mill off Lanza Avenue, Samuel Hird, and New Jersey Worsted were running full shifts. Those early-1900s mill-town houses were built narrow and stacked multi-story, with steep, close-quartered staircases that were never designed with an aging knee in mind. We put stairlifts into these older Garfield two- and three-families on a regular basis, and the tighter stairwells here usually call for a compact rail rather than the wider units that fit fine in a newer, spread-out suburban build.

About Garfield

What makes Garfield different

Why a stairlift installed in Garfield, NJ is planned around the way this specific community lives, not stamped out from a one-size-fits-all template.

The Local Terrain

Garfield occupies about 2.11 square miles of land at roughly 98 feet elevation, bordered by the Passaic River and Saddle River, with 100% of residents living in urban areas and none rural. The riverfront setting and dense, low-lying urban footprint make it a compact, fully urbanized city rather than a spread-out suburb.

Homes & Housing Stock

Garfield is a densely developed, essentially built-out city of just 2.08 square miles that grew up as a textile-manufacturing town around mills such as the Forstmann Woolen plant off Lanza Avenue, Samuel Hird, New Jersey Worsted, and Phoenix Mills. Its early-20th-century mill-town housing stock is compact and closely spaced, with many older multi-story dwellings where stair access matters for aging residents.

The Community

Garfield's economy has shifted away from its woolen-mill heritage; the big textile mills are largely gone and its longtime largest employer, Garden State Paper on River Drive, closed in 2002, leaving a diversified small-business and service base. As of the 2020 census, 12.8% of residents were 65 or older, a meaningful aging-in-place population within the older housing stock.

Common Questions

Everything Garfield Homeowners Actually Ask

Straight answers about cost, installation, and funding, no sales fluff. Browse by topic or call us if you have a question that isn't here.

What does a stairlift typically cost for one of Garfield's older mill-town homes?

A straight stairlift runs less than a curved one everywhere, and that math works in your favor in a lot of Garfield's housing stock — the mill-era two- and three-families tend to have shorter, single-run staircases rather than the long curved staircases you see in bigger suburban colonials. If your stairs turn at a landing, which is common in the older multi-story units here, expect a custom-bent rail and a higher quote than a straight run.

Does Garfield's dense, built-out layout affect the price?

Not directly through square footage of the town, but indirectly through the housing itself. With homeownership at 45.4% here, a good share of Garfield residents are renting rather than owning, and landlords are often reluctant to pay for a modification even when a tenant needs one — that's a separate conversation from what the equipment itself costs, and worth having with your landlord before you get quotes.

A word from Luis
I've done more jobs in Garfield's older mill housing than I can count — narrow stairwells in the two- and three-family homes closer to the river side of town, where you're measuring twice because there just isn't much wall clearance to work with. The city is built out at a little over two square miles, so nobody's tearing these houses down and starting fresh; people age in place here because that's the housing stock that exists. Shorter rail runs in these tighter stairwells usually keep the job on the lower end of the price range compared to a big single-family with a wide switchback staircase.
