The city lies on both Estero Bay and the Gulf of Mexico, with the Imperial River flowing through its downtown into Estero Bay and Bonita Beach on the barrier island of Little Hickory Island; its elevation of only 10 feet leaves it flood-prone, and Hurricane Irma (2017) caused significant flooding.

More than a third of the housing units in Bonita Springs — 35.5% of them, per the 2020 census — sit empty part of the year, snowbird condos and second homes stacked along Estero Bay and the Gulf. That's a market of aging owners who fly in for a few months at a stretch and need the place ready to go, stairs included, the day they land. With 42.9% of residents past 65 and close to 11% past 80, a stairlift here isn't a someday project — it's often what lets someone keep the condo instead of selling it.

What makes Bonita Springs different
Why a stairlift installed in Bonita Springs, FL is planned around the way this specific community lives, not stamped out from a one-size-fits-all template.
Bonita Springs had 38,577 housing units at the 2020 census with a very high 35.5% vacancy rate, reflecting a large share of seasonal, snowbird and second-home condominiums typical of a Southwest Florida coastal retirement market.

I called from Connecticut because my mother had been sleeping downstairs in her Bonita Bay home since she fell on the stairs last winter. All American had the ARB approval in seven days, installed the following week, and Mom called me from the top of the stairs to say the ride was 'smoother than the elevator at Coconut Point.' That's the first time she's laughed about the stairs in a year.
Our Pelican Landing home has an L-shaped staircase that three companies told us required two separate lifts. All American fabricated one curved rail that rides the full L in a single continuous track. My husband — a retired Marine colonel — declared it 'field-ready' after the first ride. ARB approved in nine days.
My grandchildren visit every school break and I needed a lift they couldn't accidentally ride. All American installed a keyed lockout on the controls — the kids run up and down the stairs without even knowing the lift is there unless I turn the key. The fold-flat seat completely clears the stairway. I finally stopped worrying about them playing near it.
I hadn't slept upstairs since Hurricane Ian — nine days without power and I was trapped on the second floor for the first two. All American installed a high-capacity battery backup rated for 40+ trips without grid power. I slept upstairs that night for the first time in three years. My daughter in Chicago finally stopped worrying.
I'm a Vietnam vet and the Bay Pines VA approved my HISA grant in six weeks. Luis prefilled every form and the outdoor lift on my lanai has survived its first full hurricane season — stainless hardware, sealed motor, not a spot of rust. Every vet at the Bonita Springs American Legion should know about this program.
The four steps from my driveway to the front door had become the most dangerous part of my day. All American installed a compact rail and now I walk to my car, ride up four steps, and enter the house without the cane ever touching a stair. Simple solution I should have done two years ago.

Straight Stairlift
Bestseller
The workhorse of Bonita Springs' gated communities — Bonita Bay, Pelican Landing, Spanish Wells, Brooks. Over 75% of the stairlifts we install in Bonita Springs are this model. Modern construction means standard geometry and fast installs — most wrap in under three hours. The rail bolts to your stair treads (never into the wall), the seat and footrest fold up out of the way, and the hurricane-rated battery backup keeps you moving through the next named storm's power outage.
What's Included
- Battery backup for power outages
- Swivel seat with safety lock
- Two wireless remote controls
- Soft start and soft stop motion
- Fold-up seat, arms, and footrest
- 10-year motor & gearbox warranty
Compared to Alternatives
vs Curved: 3x less expensive and installed in one visit. vs Home elevator: 10-15x less cost and no construction. vs Moving bedroom downstairs: Keeps your home exactly as it is.
Curved Stairlift
Custom-Built
Custom rails for L-shaped staircases, landing turns, and villa duplexes across the gated communities. When your staircase has a turn or an L-shape — common in Pelican Landing, Worthington, and the larger Bonita Bay floor plans — the rail has to be manufactured for your exact geometry. We laser-scan on the first visit, fabricate the curved rail (1-2 weeks), and install in a single afternoon. Tile treads are standard in Southwest Florida; we use masonry anchors rated for the substrate.
What's Included
- Free on-site digital measurement
- Single continuous curved rail
- Handles 90°, 180°, or spiral turns
- Powered swivel at top landing
- Park position out of the walkway
- 10-year warranty on all parts
Compared to Alternatives
vs Straight with landing break: One smooth ride instead of transferring seats. vs Home elevator: Half the cost, no construction permits, no shaft needed. vs Moving: A fraction of what selling and relocating costs.
Outdoor Stairlift
Weather-Tough
Salt air, hurricane-rated, and marine-grade from day one — built for the Southwest Florida coast. Every component is marine-grade coated, stainless-fastened, and sealed against the salt air that reaches every home in Bonita Springs from the Gulf. The motor housing is sealed to IP54 and the battery is rated for multi-day hurricane outages. Perfect for lanai-to-pool-deck access, raised-slab entries, and any exterior stairs exposed to the Southwest Florida climate.
What's Included
- Marine-grade weather cover
- All-weather corrosion protection
- Storm-rated anchor system
- Lockable key power switch
- Sealed IP54 control panels
- 5-year full-weather warranty
Compared to Alternatives
vs Standard stairlift outdoors: Won't rust, seize, or void its warranty. vs Exterior ramp: No permits, no concrete work, no lost yard. vs Home entry renovation: Installed in a single day.
Heavy-Duty Stairlift
400 lb Rated
When comfort and capacity matter more than the standard 300 lb limit. The reinforced frame handles up to 600 lbs with a 22-inch padded seat — wider than any standard model. Popular with Bonita Springs families caring for parents who need more space, and for post-surgery recovery at NCH Baker Hospital, Lee Health, and Physicians Regional where full weight-bearing isn't yet safe. Installs in a single day with the same battery backup and 10-year warranty as our standard lineup.
What's Included
- 400 lb rated weight capacity
- 22-inch wide padded seat
- Reinforced dual-tube rail
- Extended footrest and armrests
- Weight-rated safety harness
- 10-year motor & frame warranty

Everything Bonita Springs Homeowners Actually Ask
Straight answers about cost, installation, and funding, no sales fluff. Browse by topic or call us if you have a question that isn't here.
What does a stairlift cost in Bonita Springs?
The staircase decides the price more than the address does — a straight run costs less than a turn. Curved rail comes up a lot here because so much of the housing stock is condo and villa stairwells with a landing partway up, not a simple open run. Installing during peak snowbird season, roughly October through April, can also mean booking ahead since that's when demand across Lee County peaks.
Is a used or refurbished stairlift cheaper here?
Usually, and with over a third of the city's housing sitting vacant part of the year, there's a steadier-than-average supply of lightly-used lifts coming out of condos that get sold or renovated. A reconditioned straight lift is where the real savings are; curved rail is custom-bent to one specific staircase, so a used curved unit rarely fits a different building.
Does the salt air near Estero Bay push up maintenance costs?
It can, if the unit isn't spec'd for it. Homes and condos close to Bonita Beach and the Imperial River see faster corrosion on standard hardware, so we generally recommend the marine-grade rail and fastener upgrade at install — a small add-on cost that cuts down on service calls down the road.
How does the post-Irma construction here affect installation?
A good number of buildings were rebuilt or elevated after the 2017 flooding, with living space starting on a second floor above a ground-level parking or utility area. That means the actual stair run — and where we anchor the rail — isn't always where a standard single-story install would put it. We measure the real stringer on site rather than assume a layout.
Can a stairlift go into a condo unit, not just a house?
Plenty of our Bonita Springs installs are inside condo buildings along the bay and the Gulf, not detached homes. Interior stairwells in multi-story units take a straight or curved lift fine as long as tread width clears code minimums. HOA approval is usually the bigger hurdle than the stairs themselves, so we build that into the timeline.
How long does installation take?
Straight rail is typically a same-day job. Curved rail has to be measured and fabricated to the exact staircase, which comes up often in this market given how many condo and villa stairwells here aren't simple straight runs — that adds lead time before the crew shows up to install.
Does Florida Medicaid cover a stairlift in Lee County?
It can, through Statewide Medicaid Managed Care Long-Term Care (SMMC LTC) as an Environmental/Home Accessibility Adaptation — stairlifts are named as an example EAA item under that benefit. There's no published statewide dollar cap; the amount depends on your managed care plan. Your local access point is the Area Agency on Aging for Southwest Florida at (239) 652-6900, or the SMMC line at 1-800-963-5337.
Will the VA's HISA grant pay for a stairlift?
Not the HISA grant itself — the VA's own Prosthetics fact sheet excludes porch lifts and stair glides from HISA coverage, even though HISA otherwise pays up to $6,800 for service-connected veterans or $2,000 for non-service-connected. A stairlift usually has to come through VA Prosthetics separately, which has no fixed dollar cap but does require a medical prescription.
What if I don't qualify for Medicaid or VA benefits?
The FAAST New Horizon Loan Program offers low-interest loans, roughly $3,000 to $30,000, for home modifications like a stairlift — worth confirming the current cap directly with FAAST. And if you own your home in Bonita Springs, Florida's Homestead Exemption plus the Senior Additional Homestead Exemption can reduce your taxable value by up to $50,000 each. That's not cash in hand, but it frees up carrying costs some owners redirect toward accessibility work.

I've put lifts in enough of these Bonita Springs buildings to know the stairwells aren't all the same. A fair number went up or got rebuilt after Irma flooded the city in 2017, so living space often starts on a second floor above ground-level parking — that changes where the rail anchors and how much track the job needs. Salt air off the bay is hard on hardware too, so even for units well inland of Bonita Beach I usually point people toward marine-grade fasteners and rail finish up front rather than dealing with corrosion later.
