The town sits on the north end of Estero Island, a Gulf barrier island, at about 3 feet elevation; Hurricane Ian struck as a Category 4 storm on September 28, 2022, with destructive storm surge.

Fort Myers Beach is still rebuilding after Hurricane Ian, and the storm sometimes left a straight run where a turned staircase used to be. With over half the island's residents 65 or older, installing now beats retrofitting a finished staircase later. Salt air is standard here, so marine-grade hardware is too; send your rebuild plans and I'll fit the lift before drywall goes up.

Luis installed a straight rail in our Laguna Shores home about three months after we finished the post-Ian rebuild. Our staircase is longer now, 16 steps up from the ground-level garage, and the lift fits it perfectly. The seat swivels at the top landing so my husband can step onto the main floor without turning. Three hours, no drywall damage, no mess.
We live in a second-floor condo at Palms of Bay Beach and needed a curved rail: the staircase has a 90-degree turn plus a short landing halfway up. I talked to three companies; only Luis walked in, looked at the geometry, and said 'this is doable.' The rail came back from fabrication in nine days and the crew had it running by lunch.
My mother lives in the Islands End condos on the south end. After Ian she moved back into a rebuilt unit with a staircase she was scared to use. Luis put in a straight lift on her interior stairs: the rail follows the wall, the seat folds up, and the battery backup gives her one less thing to worry about during storm season. She's used it daily for eight months now.
We bought a 1970s cottage near the Mound House and needed an outdoor lift for the exterior stairs from the driveway up to the main level. Luis recommended marine-grade sealing because we're only 200 yards from the bay. Eighteen months in, no rust, no fading. The seat and rail look like they were installed last week.
I'm a veteran and used the HISA grant to cover most of my straight stairlift. Luis's team knew exactly which forms I needed from the Lee County VA Clinic and even called to confirm the medical-necessity statement went in correctly. The grant covered $6,800 and I paid about $400 out of pocket. First call to install was 17 days.
Our Bayside Estates canal-front home has stairs inside and out down to the dock. Luis put a heavy-duty lift on the interior staircase, my husband needs the 600 lb capacity, and an outdoor unit on the dock stairs. Both have held up through two full summers of humidity and salt spray. The outdoor lift's battery backup kicked in twice during afternoon thunderstorms and never stopped working.

We cover all seven miles of Estero Island, from Times Square at the Matanzas Pass Bridge down to Lovers Key. That includes the condo towers along Estero Boulevard, the Indian Creek and Islands End communities on the south end, single-family homes in Laguna Shores, the cottages near the Mound House on Connecticut Street, and the canal-front 55+ homes in Bayside Estates. Most post-Ian rebuilds sit on 12-to-14-foot pilings with long exterior staircases, so we measure for a custom rail and spec marine-grade sealing on anything exposed to Gulf salt air.

Everything Fort Myers Beach Homeowners Actually Ask
Straight answers about cost, installation, and funding, no sales fluff. Browse by topic or call us if you have a question that isn't here.
What does a stairlift typically cost for a Fort Myers Beach home?
Pricing follows the same straight-vs-curved split you'd see anywhere in Lee County, but the rebuild adds a wrinkle. A lot of homes redone after Hurricane Ian came out with different stair configurations: some now have a bend where the old stair was straight, some are taller because of raised construction. A straight-rail lift is the lower-cost option; if your rebuild added a turn or a taller raised entry stair, expect a curved-rail quote instead, priced higher because the rail is custom-measured to that exact run.
Are refurbished or used stairlifts a way to cut cost here?
I'd be cautious recommending a used unit for anything exposed to outdoor air on this island: the hardware has already logged time in salt and humidity you can't fully inspect after the fact. For an interior stair in a rebuilt home, refurbished can still make sense; just ask the installer exactly which model it is and how it was stored before you buy.
Does the town's seasonal, part-time housing pattern change how quotes work?
With 67.2% of Fort Myers Beach housing units sitting vacant part of the year, a good share of the quotes I write are for part-time residents getting a place ready before they move back after their rebuild finishes. That doesn't change the unit price, but it does mean the install date gets scheduled around when the homeowner is actually on the island.
How long does a stairlift installation take?
A straight-rail lift in a home whose stair structure hasn't changed since Ian is usually a same-day job, a few hours start to finish. If the house was rebuilt with a different stair layout, we measure on-site first, because a fair number of the post-storm rebuilds don't match what's still on file with the county.
Can a stairlift go on a newly rebuilt or raised staircase?
Yes, and it's actually easier than retrofitting an old one. On a post-Ian rebuild we can spec the rail directly to the new run instead of working around decades-old wood that's been patched over the years. I've mounted a few of these on freshly framed rebuilt stairs and the clean framing makes for a tighter install.
Does being on a barrier island change what equipment gets installed?
At around three feet above sea level with the Gulf on one side, salt air gets into everything faster than it does inland. I run marine-grade rail and hardware on stairlifts here as the standard spec, and I recommend the same for any lanai or covered-porch stair: regular hardware corrodes noticeably faster this close to the water.
Does Florida Medicaid cover a stairlift for a Fort Myers Beach resident?
It can. Florida's Statewide Medicaid Managed Care Long-Term Care program (SMMC LTC) treats a stairlift as an Environmental/Home Accessibility Adaptation under its HCBS waiver: there's no statewide dollar cap published; your managed care plan approves the amount case by case. For Lee County, the local access point is the Area Agency on Aging for Southwest Florida (PSA 8) at (239) 652-6900, which handles SMMC LTC intake, though it isn't itself the funding source.
I'm a veteran, will the VA pay for my stairlift?
Check the fine print before counting on this one. The VA's HISA grant (up to $6,800 for a service-connected condition, $2,000 if non-service-connected) specifically excludes stair glides and porch lifts, per the official VA Prosthetics fact sheet. A stairlift instead gets covered through VA Prosthetics as a medically prescribed item, with no fixed dollar cap, but it requires a doctor's prescription and VA approval before you order the unit.
Is there a loan option if I don't qualify for Medicaid or VA coverage?
FAAST's New Horizon Loan Program is worth a call: a low-interest loan for home modifications, stairlifts included, generally in the $3,000 to $30,000 range. Confirm the current cap directly with FAAST since loan terms shift. It's a loan, not a grant, but the rate is built specifically for accessibility purchases like this one.

I've handled a handful of installs out here since the rebuild picked up, and what surprises people is how much the storm changed their stairs: new pilings, different interior layouts, sometimes a straight run where there used to be a landing with a turn. Sitting about three feet above sea level on a barrier island, salt air and humidity come up in nearly every consult, so I spec marine-grade hardware on stairlifts here as the default, not as an upsell.
Ready to get started? It's simple.
Fort Myers Beach has been through a rebuild few communities will ever face, and the staircase is often the last thing a homeowner wants to deal with. A stairlift, whether it's a straight rail on an interior oak staircase in Bayside Estates or an outdoor unit running up to a stilt-home deck, settles that piece for good.
Call (800) 965-0350 or use the form on this page. Luis shows up with the right rail, the right hardware for salt-air exposure, and a written quote the same day. Most island installs are scheduled within the week, with no trip charge.
