Stairlift Service Across Alameda County

Alameda County, CA

From the Gold Coast Queen Annes along Grand Street — where the conversation is always about preserving original fir banisters and century-old millwork — to the Fernside Colonial Revivals and Craftsman bungalows along Fernside Boulevard, our team has mapped every block on the island. We know which East End bungalows have the narrow 31-inch stairways that require our slimmest profile rail, which West Alameda multi-unit conversions need FEHA accommodation paperwork before we can start, and which Bay Farm Island townhouses have post-2000 wide-tread stairs that install in three hours flat. South Shore's waterfront homes need salt-air sealed hardware as standard. Every staircase on Alameda Island has a geometry we've measured before.

Straight

Gold Coast Victorian — straight rail on original dark oak treads

Gold Coast, CA Installed March 2026

A 1901 Victorian on San Antonio Avenue with dark hardwood open-tread stairs and an original fir banister. The Nakamuras needed a straight rail from the foyer to the second floor. We bolted the track directly into the oak treads on the right side, leaving the original banister untouched. The beige seat parks at the bottom landing, folded flat so it doesn't block the front hallway. Mrs. Nakamura's neighbor from the Alameda Architectural Preservation Society came by the next week and said it blended right in with the warm wood tones.

Fernside Colonial Revival — curved rail bends around the upper landing half-wall

Fernside, CA Installed February 2026

A 1928 Colonial Revival on Fernside Boulevard with a formal staircase that curves 90 degrees at the upper landing around a half-wall balustrade. Mrs. Gillespie's brown-upholstered seat parks at the top floor, right where the hallway begins — she steps off onto level ground instead of a stair tread. The curved rail follows the banister line without touching the original walnut woodwork. With the chandelier above and framed family portraits on the stair wall, the lift fits the home's character.

East End bungalow — compact straight rail past the hallway sideboard

East End, CA Installed January 2026

A 1918 bungalow east of Park Street with stone-tile treads and a compact entryway. The seat sits at the bottom of the stairs next to the Chens' wooden sideboard and potted fern — the cottage feel of these older East End homes means furniture is always close. We mounted the straight rail on the wall side so the folded seat clears the cabinet by six inches. The whole install wrapped in three hours, and the cozy traditional space didn't lose an inch of character.

South Shore raised porch — outdoor lift on stone-paved entry steps

South Shore, CA Installed December 2025

A 1950s ranch on South Shore with a raised front porch and natural stone paving at the entry. Mr. Andersen is a Navy veteran who served at the former Naval Air Station Alameda — he qualified for an HISA grant through the VA Palo Alto system's Livermore campus. The cream-colored weather-resistant seat rides from the stone-paved ground level up to the covered porch landing. Every fastener is stainless steel rated for the salt air blowing in off San Francisco Bay, and the motor housing carries an IP55 weather seal.

West Alameda Victorian — straight rail on carpeted stairs to the second-floor unit

West Alameda, CA Installed November 2025

An 1895 Victorian on Central Avenue converted into four units in the 1970s. The carpeted staircase from the ground-floor entry to Mrs. Dominguez's second-floor unit has brown carpet that matches the brown upholstery of the seat — her daughter picked the color on purpose. We ran a straight rail up the carpet-covered treads, mounted the seat at the landing, and added a swivel exit so she steps off onto the tiled hallway floor. The FEHA accommodation packet took 11 days to approve through the HOA.

Platform Lift

Bay Farm Island townhouse — inclined wheelchair platform for a resident who uses a power chair

Bay Farm Island, CA Installed October 2025

A 2004 townhouse on Bay Farm Island where Mr. Patel uses a power wheelchair full-time after a spinal injury. A seated stairlift was not an option — he needed to ride his chair onto a flat platform. We installed an inclined wheelchair platform lift with a black anti-slip surface and yellow high-visibility safety edges along the indoor stairway. The white handrail locks into position during the ride and folds flat against the wall when not in use. Mr. Patel rolls on at the bottom, rides to the upper floor, and rolls off without ever leaving his chair.

Common Questions

Everything Alameda Homeowners Actually Ask

Straight answers about cost, installation, and funding — no sales fluff. Browse by topic or call us if you have a question that isn't here.

What does a stairlift actually cost in Alameda right now?

Straight rails in standard Alameda homes — a Fernside bungalow, an East End two-story, a Bay Farm townhouse — run $2,900 to $5,800 installed. Curved rails for Gold Coast Queen Annes and Fernside Colonial Revivals with mid-landing turns run $9,500 to $16,000 because the rail is fabricated to your exact staircase geometry. Outdoor lifts for raised porches and front stairs on pre-1920 homes run $4,200 to $7,800 with salt-air sealed housing standard. Every quote is written, honored for 30 days, and includes installation, rail, seat, battery backup, and the first service visit.

Are prices different in Alameda than in Oakland or Berkeley?

Equipment prices are the same across the East Bay — we don't inflate quotes because you live on the Gold Coast or South Shore. What varies slightly is install labor for unusual conditions: historic overlay filings for exterior work on contributing structures, FEHA accommodation packets for converted condo buildings, and compensating rail mounts for foundation-settled treads in pre-earthquake homes. We tell you the line items upfront. No surprise surcharges.

My Victorian was converted into a four-plex. Can the HOA block this?

No. California's Fair Employment and Housing Act (FEHA) and Government Code 12927 require HOAs and condo associations to grant reasonable accommodations for residents with documented disabilities — this is stronger than the federal Fair Housing Act and explicitly covers accessibility equipment. We prepare the FEHA accommodation-request packet at no charge. We've handled trustee approvals across Alameda for converted Victorians in the Gold Coast, multi-unit buildings in West Alameda, and planned communities on Bay Farm Island. Most boards approve in 10-14 business days once the packet is in front of them.

Does the salt air affect the equipment?

It would — if we shipped standard hardware. Alameda sits between the Oakland Estuary and San Francisco Bay, and zinc-plated fasteners pit within 3-4 seasons. Every Alameda install ships with sealed IP54 motor housings, stainless steel fasteners, and marine-grade rail coating as a baseline spec — no upcharge. For outdoor installs on raised porches near the water, we add a desiccant pouch inside the rail cavity and a UV-resistant cover. Our oldest Bay Area coastal install is still running after 11 years without a motor replacement.

A word from Luis

Most Alameda families call me after a near-miss on a steep set of Victorian stairs — a slip on the original fir treads in a Gold Coast Queen Anne, a parent who hasn't been upstairs in their Fernside Colonial Revival since a hip replacement, a son in Portland worried about his mother alone in a two-story East End bungalow she's lived in for 40 years.

My job is simple: drive across the estuary within 24 hours, measure once, and give you a price that's honored for 30 days. No pressure. No upsells.
