Straight Stairlift

The workhorse of Westland's 1960s ranches — the basement drop in Tonquish Creek, Westland Woods, and Central City.

Over 70% of the stairlifts we install in Westland are this model. The rail bolts directly into the stair treads (never into your wall or paneling), fits the standard 36-inch stair widths in postwar ranches, and the folding seat and footrest tuck flat when parked. For Norwayne's 30-inch cottages, we carry the compact-profile version. Every Westland install ships with the cold-pack battery backup rated to -30°F. Most wrap in under four hours.

Starting at $2,800 installed

What's Included

  • Battery backup for power outages
  • Swivel seat with safety lock
  • Two wireless remote controls
  • Soft start and soft stop motion
  • Fold-up seat, arms, and footrest
  • 10-year motor & gearbox warranty

Stairlift Service Across Wayne County

Wayne County, MI

The Palmer Corridor split-levels — Palmer Road from Wayne Road to Newburgh — are curved-rail territory. These 1965-1975 homes have the six-step-landing-eight-step layout that requires a single continuous curved rail from foyer to bedrooms. We laser-scan on the first visit because no two landing angles match after 55 years of foundation movement.

Tonquish Creek and Westland Woods south of Ford Road are the bread-and-butter straight-rail installs — 1960s brick ranches with finished basements and 12-step runs on 36-inch-wide stairs. Central City near Westland Shopping Center mixes ranches and cape cods, some with original hardwood treads the homeowner wants preserved. We bolt into treads, never into walls or banisters.

Norwayne — the 1942 defense-worker district south of Palmer between Venoy and Wildwood — has cottages built under wartime restrictions: no basements, narrow interior stairs in twin-home configurations. The 30-inch widths require our compact-profile rail.

Basement run in a 1966 Tonquish Creek ranch — original oak treads preserved

Tonquish Creek, MI Installed March 2026

A 1966 brick ranch on Birchwood Street with 12 original oak treads down to the finished basement — the kind of dark hardwood stairs that define Westland's postwar housing stock. Mr. Nowak had been avoiding the basement workshop since a knee replacement in November. We bolted the straight rail into the oak treads (never the wall, never the banister), mounted the beige seat at the bottom landing, and tested every sensor. He was back at his workbench by dinner. The rail practically disappears against the warm wood tones.

90° landing turn in a 1968 Palmer Corridor split-level

Palmer Corridor, MI Installed February 2026

A 1968 split-level on Palmer Road west of Merriman — six steps from the foyer to the living level, a 90° turn at the mid-landing, then eight more steps to the bedrooms. Mrs. Kowalczyk's daughter called us after her mother stopped going upstairs entirely. We laser-scanned the staircase on the first visit, fabricated a curved rail that threads the full run in a single track, and installed a swivel-exit seat at the upper landing so she steps off directly onto the hallway floor. The brown upholstery blends with the original carpet runner. She's back sleeping in her own bedroom for the first time in four months.

Compact straight rail in a 1958 Central City cape cod

Central City, MI Installed January 2026

A 1958 cape cod near Westland Shopping Center with a short, steep staircase to the second-floor bedrooms — stone-tiled treads, a wooden sideboard at the base of the stairs, and barely enough room for Mr. DiNardo's walker at the bottom landing. We fitted the compact straight rail against the wall side, positioned the brown seat to clear the sideboard when parked, and bolted into the tile treads with masonry anchors. The cozy interior — his late wife's potted plants still on the cabinet, family photos on every surface — is completely untouched. He rides past the sideboard twice a day without moving a single picture frame.

Five-step front stoop in Westland Woods — weather-sealed for Michigan winters

Westland Woods, MI Installed December 2025

A 1963 ranch on Hazelwood Street with a raised front stoop — five stone-paved steps up to the front door, no handrail on the right side, and a northern exposure that collects ice from November through March. Mrs. Pearson had fallen twice on the steps the previous winter and stopped using the front door entirely. We installed the outdoor-rated rail with the cream weather-resistant seat, sealed motor housing, cold-pack battery, and a battery blanket for the motor cover. She was back greeting the mail carrier at her front door that afternoon. The stone paving made for solid anchor points — no shimming required.

Narrow carpeted stairs in a 1942 Norwayne twin-home conversion

Norwayne, MI Installed November 2025

A 1942 Norwayne twin-home on Dorsey Street — one of the original defense-worker cottages built for Willow Run bomber plant employees. The second floor was converted to bedrooms in the 1960s with a narrow carpeted staircase, 31 inches wide, brown carpet over plywood treads, and a landing at the top with a tiled hallway floor. Mr. Bowers is 84 and has lived in Norwayne since 1971. We fitted the compact-profile rail, bolted through the carpet into the tread structure, and matched the brown seat to the carpet tones. The folding footrest clears the bottom doorway by an inch and a half. He made us measure it three times — and then rode it up and shook our hands at the top.

Platform Lift

Indoor wheelchair platform lift in an Annapolis Park ranch

Annapolis Park, MI Installed October 2025

A 1962 ranch near Annapolis and Middlebelt where Mr. Carter — a Vietnam-era veteran with a service-connected spinal cord injury — uses a power wheelchair full-time and cannot transfer to a seated stairlift. The finished basement has his physical therapy equipment and a roll-in shower installed by the VA. We mounted an inclined wheelchair platform lift on the indoor basement stairway — flat black anti-slip platform with yellow high-visibility safety edges, white safety rail, and a motor rated for the full weight of the chair plus occupant. The orange-painted basement walls and window at the landing give the space natural light. His VA HISA grant covered the full cost. He rolls onto the platform, rides down, and rolls off into his therapy room without a single transfer.

Common Questions

Everything Westland Homeowners Actually Ask

Straight answers about cost, installation, and funding — no sales fluff. Browse by topic or call us if you have a question that isn't here.

What does a stairlift cost in Westland right now?

Straight rails in standard Westland ranches — the 10-to-12-step basement runs in Tonquish Creek, Westland Woods, and Central City — run $2,800 to $5,500 installed. Curved rails for Palmer Corridor split-levels with the mid-landing 90° turn run $9,000 to $15,000 because the rail is manufactured to your exact staircase geometry. Outdoor models for raised front stoops run $4,000 to $7,500. Every quote is written, honored for 30 days, and includes the rail, seat, cold-pack battery backup, installation, and the first service visit.

Is a Westland install cheaper than, say, Livonia or Plymouth?

Equipment costs are identical — we don't price by zip code. What occasionally adds a line item is an electrical permit when we pull a new dedicated circuit in a home still running the original 60-amp panel from 1965. That's a pass-through at cost, usually $75 to $150, filed under our Michigan-licensed electrical contractor. It shows on the quote before you sign, not on the invoice after.

Do you charge more for Norwayne cottages because they're tight?

No. The compact-profile rail we use in Norwayne's 30-inch stair widths is the same price as the standard rail. What Norwayne installs sometimes need is a folding footrest to clear the bottom doorway in the twin-home and row-house configurations — that's included in the quote, not an add-on. We've done enough Norwayne installs to price them accurately on the first visit.

Any hidden fees for condo or senior-community installs?

Our quote includes the HOA and condo-board paperwork we handle for you. Westland has several 55+ communities and senior apartment complexes — Adams Senior Village, Ashford Court, The Village of Westland — where we've already worked with management on accommodation letters. The Michigan Condominium Act and federal Fair Housing Act require reasonable accommodation. If the board asks for an engineer letter (rare), we tell you upfront.

A word from Luis

Westland is 1960s ranch after 1960s ranch — Ford Road to Cherry Hill, Wayne Road to Merriman — with a finished basement that Mom hasn't been down to in two years and a set of stairs to the bedrooms she's been dreading since the hip replacement. The other call I take a lot is the Norwayne cottage with no basement at all but a narrow set of steps to a converted second floor.

I'll be at your house within 24 hours. One measurement visit, one written price, honored for 30 days. No pressure, no callbacks from a sales floor.
