Stairlift Service Across Gogebic County

Gogebic County, MI

Ironwood's neighborhoods carry the names of the mines that built them. Norrie, named after the East Norrie Mine, runs along Norrie Street with 1890s–1910s frame cottages for ore workers — narrow 28–30-inch stairwells, steep pitch. Aurora/Jessieville, named after the Aurora Mine, sits on the hillside; over 58% of homes predate 1939. City Center, along Aurora Street and Suffolk Street, holds the Carnegie Library (1901, NRHP) and the Chicago & Northwestern Depot (1892, NRHP).

Curry and Longyear, south of downtown, have 1950s–1960s brick ranches with standard 36-inch stairs — straight-rail jobs. North Ironwood, bordering Ironwood Township, has newer 1970s–1990s builds with wider stairwells. Norrie and Aurora/Jessieville are where we see the curved and slim-profile rail work.

Common Questions

Everything Ironwood Homeowners Actually Ask

Straight answers about cost, installation, and funding — no sales fluff. Browse by topic or call us if you have a question that isn't here.

How much does a stairlift cost in Ironwood, MI?

Straight rails for a Curry or Longyear brick ranch start at $2,800 installed. Curved rails for the 1890s–1920s frame homes in Norrie and Aurora/Jessieville start at $9,000 — the stairwells run only 28–30 inches wide and need a slim custom rail. Outdoor units start at $4,000; heavy-duty 600-lb units from $5,050. Financing from $79 per month.

Are there state tax credits for stairlifts in Michigan?

Michigan does not offer a dedicated state stairlift tax credit, but a doctor-prescribed stairlift qualifies as a medical expense deduction on your federal Schedule A if total medical expenses exceed 7.5% of AGI. That deduction flows to Michigan taxable income. Keep the physician letter, paid invoice, and install date — all three are required if audited.

Will Medicare pay for my stairlift in Ironwood?

No. Medicare classifies stairlifts as home modifications, not durable medical equipment, so it does not cover them. Some Medicare Advantage plans include a Supplemental Benefit for Chronically Ill (SSBCI) home modification benefit — call your plan administrator and ask whether stair lifts qualify under that specific category in your plan.

What is the cheapest stairlift option for an Ironwood ranch?

A reconditioned straight rail starts around $2,200 installed for the standard 12–14 ft runs in a Curry or Longyear 1950s ranch. Each unit gets a full-load test cycle before delivery, a 1-year parts-and-labor warranty, and the same licensed install crew as a new unit — only the unit's age differs.

A word from Luis

Ironwood's housing stock is among the oldest in Michigan — over half of the homes were built before 1939, most of them frame cottages and Lake Superior sandstone row houses put up for iron-ore miners working the Norrie, Aurora, and Ashland shafts. The stairwells in those pre-war homes run narrow: 28 to 32 inches wide, steep pitch, short tread depth. Every job on Norrie Street or in the Aurora/Jessieville neighborhood starts with a tape measure and ends with a custom-configured rail, not a brochure quote.

The newer Curry and Longyear sections from the 1950s and 1960s have standard 36-inch stairways — textbook straight-rail installs, three to four hours start to finish. Ironwood's lake-effect snow season runs October through April, with a 148-inch annual average. That means any outdoor porch lift on a West Cloverland or Suffolk Street home gets IP55 sealed motor housing and stainless hardware as standard spec — not an option.

— Luis Ramírez, Ironwood
Your Next Step

Ready to get started? It's simple.

Ironwood's pre-war frame homes on Norrie Street and the hillside Aurora/Jessieville cottages are not the same job as a Curry Road brick ranch from 1958. We measure on-site at the Carnegie Library end of town and the Cloverland Drive end alike — never a phone quote for a staircase we have not seen. Most calls come after a close call on the stairs. We can have a unit running within a week of the first visit.

Gogebic County veterans can file HISA grant paperwork directly at the Ironwood VA Clinic, 629 W Cloverland Drive Suite 1 — the clinic is part of the Oscar G. Johnson VA Medical Center system and processes HISA applications on-site. Michigan's MI Choice Waiver covers environmental modifications including stair lifts for qualifying Medicaid enrollees. Call us first and we will help sort funding before anything goes to contract.
