Does the age of the Front Street-area housing change the install?
It can. Several of the two-story homes near the historic Front Street core, the same older buildings that now hold the downtown boutiques and restaurants, were framed with narrower stairwells than newer construction, so I plan on a more careful measurement visit rather than assuming a stock rail fits. The lift attaches to the treads or the adjacent wall, not the structure itself, so it doesn't trigger any kind of preservation review.
Does PASSPORT cover a stairlift for a Fremont senior?
Ohio's PASSPORT waiver runs on individualized care plans with no stated dollar cap, but the program materials covering this region only describe "minor home modifications and adaptive equipment" (grab bars, ramps, transfer benches) without confirming or ruling out a stairlift by name. Call the Area Office on Aging of Northwestern Ohio at 1-800-472-7277 and ask your care manager directly what fits inside your plan.
What about veterans, does the VA cover a stairlift here?
Not through the HISA grant. Its exclusion list names stair glides specifically, so the $6,800 lifetime cap (service-connected) or $2,000 cap (non-service-connected) won't touch a stairlift. Stronger paths are a medically prescribed lift through VA Prosthetics, which carries no set dollar cap, or working it into a Specially Adapted Housing grant (up to $126,526 in FY2026) or a Special Home Adaptation grant (up to $25,350). Is the Veteran-Directed Care program through the Area Office on Aging any help?
Read the fine print carefully here. The program's own materials mention covering "lift chairs" as an extra service, but that means powered recliner lift chairs, not a stairlift. Two different products. Whether a stairlift could be worked into an approved individualized care budget isn't spelled out anywhere public, so that's a question for whoever builds your specific plan, not something to assume either way.
