The city lies at about 10 feet elevation on the Caloosahatchee River in Lee County, on extremely flat Southwest Florida terrain, and suffered catastrophic flooding damage from Hurricane Ian on September 28, 2022.

Dean Park's 1930s bungalows in Fort Myers have staircases narrower than anything built today, some barely clearing code, so I measure twice before ordering a rail. Lee County draws so many retirees that I'm rarely the first stairlift install on these blocks. Send a photo of that staircase and I'll tell you exactly what it needs before we order anything.

What makes Fort Myers different
Why a stairlift installed in Fort Myers, FL is planned around the way this specific community lives, not stamped out from a one-size-fits-all template.
Fort Myers grew around a historic downtown waterfront on the Caloosahatchee River, with early stately-home subdivisions such as Edison Park, Dean Park, and Seminole Park developed after 1931 and numerous preserved historic properties downtown.

Hear It From Your Fort Myers Neighbors
How stairlift projects tend to go for homeowners in Fort Myers. Drag to scroll, or use the arrows and dots below.
Our Edison Park bungalow was built in 1926 and every contractor who walked in wanted to drill into the original banister. All American bolted the rail into the stair treads only. They never touched the woodwork, the plaster, or the arched doorframes. The lift parks flat at the top and you'd walk right past it if you didn't know it was there. My mother has used it every day since March without a single problem.
My father had a stroke and couldn't get to the bedroom in their McGregor Boulevard home, a 1935 Mediterranean with a curved staircase that every other company said was too complicated. All American scanned it, built a custom rail that follows the full 180-degree sweep without touching a single wrought-iron baluster, and installed it in one day. Dad rode it upstairs the same evening. My mother cried. I almost did too.
I'm a Navy vet, served out of NAS Key West, and the HISA paperwork had been sitting in a folder on my desk for two years because I couldn't face it. Luis filled out VA Form 10-0103 at my kitchen table, walked it through the Lee County VA Clinic in Cape Coral, and had the grant approved in three weeks. Outdoor lift on my front porch, ran through a full hurricane season without a hitch. I paid almost nothing out of pocket.
My mom lives alone in Seminole Park and I'm 1,200 miles away in Detroit. She had knee surgery and her surgeon said one trip up the stairs per day. That's not a plan for a woman who needs her bedroom. I called All American on a Monday, they installed Wednesday, and she rode it home from PT on Friday. First time I've slept through the night in a month.
After Hurricane Ian rebuilt our Dean Park cottage, the stone entry steps were never quite right: uneven risers, patched stucco, the top two steps slightly higher than before. All American shimmed the rail brackets to level the ride and used stainless fasteners for the salt air. My husband walks from the car to the porch with his cane and rides the last five steps. It works exactly the way they said it would.
I'm in a wheelchair full-time after a spinal injury in Afghanistan. Every company wanted to sell me a seated stairlift I couldn't use. All American installed a platform lift in our garage entry. I roll straight from my truck onto the deck, press one button, and I'm on the main floor. The HISA grant plus Florida SMMC-LTC covered everything. Zero out of pocket. These people know how to work the system for vets.

From the 1920s Craftsman bungalows of Edison Park, where preserving original Dade County pine treads and arched doorframes drives every install decision, to the Mediterranean Revival estates along McGregor Boulevard with sweeping wrought-iron staircases that only a custom curved rail can serve, our team has installed in every neighborhood in Fort Myers. Dean Park cottages have post-Hurricane Ian foundation settling that requires shimmed brackets. Seminole Park homes off McGregor have the narrow 1960s stair widths that need our slim-profile rail. Town & River Estates raised porches face southern exposure that kills standard lubricants in two seasons.

Everything Fort Myers Homeowners Actually Ask
Straight answers about cost, installation, and funding, no sales fluff. Browse by topic or call us if you have a question that isn't here.
How much does a stairlift installation run in Fort Myers?
Straight-rail lifts sit at the lower end of the price range. Curved rails, needed if your staircase has a landing or a turn, which shows up a lot in the older two-story homes around Dean Park and Seminole Park, cost more because the rail is custom-bent to match your exact stairs. Get an in-home quote; the number moves with rail length and whatever custom work an older staircase needs.
Does Fort Myers humidity or hurricane risk change the cost?
Not the base install price, but Southwest Florida's humidity means we typically spec indoor-rated units, and for a porch or exterior application we move to weatherproof models. That's a spec decision, not a big cost jump. Homeowners who rebuilt their ground floor after Hurricane Ian in 2022 sometimes rolled the lift install into the same electrical work already underway, which can trim labor cost versus a standalone job.
Is a stairlift affordable for a retiree here on a fixed income?
We get this constantly, given how many retirees settle in Lee County. Financing plans, VA benefits for veterans, and Florida's SMMC LTC Medicaid program (covered below) can all bring the out-of-pocket number down well under the sticker price.
Can a stairlift go into a historic Fort Myers home like the ones in Edison Park or Dean Park?
Yes, but it takes more planning. Those subdivisions went up after 1931, and staircases from that era often run narrower than today's code minimums, with plaster walls instead of drywall. We check stairway width, headroom, and wall construction before quoting so nothing surprises us on install day.
How long does a stairlift installation take?
A straight staircase is usually a same-day install. Curved or custom rail work, more common in the older downtown homes, takes longer because the rail has to be fabricated to match the specific turn in your stairs.
My house flooded during Hurricane Ian. Does that change the install?
If your ground floor was rebuilt after the 2022 flooding, that's actually in your favor. Fresh drywall and updated electrical near the base of the stairs make mounting and wiring simpler than working around plaster that's original to a 90-year-old house.
Does Florida Medicaid cover a stairlift in Lee County?
Through Statewide Medicaid Managed Care Long-Term Care (SMMC LTC), a stairlift can qualify as an Environmental/Home Accessibility Adaptation under your managed care plan. There's no fixed statewide dollar cap. Approval and the benefit amount are decided case by case by your MCO. Start with the Area Agency on Aging for Southwest Florida at (239) 652-6900; they handle SMMC LTC intake for Lee County.
As a veteran, will the VA pay for my stairlift?
This trips a lot of veterans up. The VA's HISA grant (up to $6,800 for a service-connected condition, $2,000 non-service-connected) specifically excludes stair glides and porch lifts from coverage. A stairlift instead has to go through VA Prosthetics as a medically prescribed item. There's no fixed dollar cap there, but you'll need your doctor's paperwork to get it approved.
Are there low-interest loans for stairlifts in Florida?
FAAST's New Horizon Loan Program offers roughly $3,000 to $30,000 for home modifications including stairlifts. Confirm the current terms directly with FAAST before you apply. Also worth a look: Florida's homestead exemption plus the senior additional homestead exemption can free up to $50,000 plus another $50,000 in property tax base, which doesn't hand you cash for the lift but can make room in the budget for one.

I've worked on lifts in some of those 1930s houses in Dean Park where the staircase width barely clears code, so you measure twice before you ever order a rail. After Hurricane Ian flooded a lot of downtown Fort Myers in September 2022, several homeowners rebuilt their ground floor from the studs out and decided to add a lift while the walls were already open, which is actually an easier job than most retrofits I do. Lee County pulls in so many retirees that I'm rarely the first stairlift install on a street.
