Straight Stairlift

Bestseller in Cranston colonials

The workhorse of Cranston’s colonials, capes, and triple-deckers — slim enough for a 28-inch stairwell. Over 70% of the stairlifts we install in Cranston are straight runs through the narrow triple-decker stairwells of Auburn and Edgewood or the standard colonial staircases in Knightsville and Garden City. The slim-profile rail leaves 17 inches of clear walking width in a 28-inch stairway, the seat and footrest fold flat, and the battery backup runs through nor’easter power outages. Bolts into the treads only — never the plaster, never the century-old woodwork.

Starting at $3,200 installed

What's Included

  • Battery backup for power outages
  • Swivel seat with safety lock
  • Two wireless remote controls
  • Soft start and soft stop motion
  • Fold-up seat, arms, and footrest
  • 10-year motor & gearbox warranty

Compared to Alternatives

vs Curved: 3x less expensive and installed in one visit. vs Home elevator: 10-15x less cost and no construction. vs Moving bedroom downstairs: Keeps your home exactly as it is.

Our Coverage Area

Stairlift Service Across Providence County

Providence County, RI

From the dense triple-decker blocks of Auburn and Edgewood — where nearly 40% of the housing is small multifamily built before 1939 and the staircases are narrow, steep, and worn smooth — to the post-war colonials and capes of Knightsville where a straight 14-step run is the most common measurement we take, our crew knows this housing stock block by block. We have measured the Garden City ranches with split-level entries, the Oaklawn two-families where tenant-accommodation letters under the RI Fair Housing Practices Act are standard, and the Western Cranston raised ranches where the foyer-to-kitchen half-flight is the step nobody planned for.

Cranston borders Providence, Warwick, Johnston, and West Warwick — our crew covers the entire Providence metro from a single dispatch, no travel surcharges.

Edgewood triple-decker — slim-profile rail on original fir treads

Edgewood, RI Installed March 2026

A 1924 triple-decker on Narragansett Boulevard in Edgewood with original Douglas fir treads worn to a polished sheen by a century of foot traffic. The stairwell is 28 inches wide. Two other companies said it was too narrow. We specified the slim-profile rail — 11 inches from wall to outer edge of the folded seat — leaving 17 inches of clear walking width. Every bolt went into the treads, not the plaster walls. The ride is whisper-quiet and Mrs. Venturini’s downstairs neighbor confirmed she cannot hear the motor through the ceiling.

1952 Knightsville colonial — curved rail threading a 90-degree landing turn

Knightsville, RI Installed February 2026

A 1952 colonial in Knightsville with 14 steps, a mid-landing with a 90-degree turn, and an original oak banister the family refused to let anyone touch. Mr. Lombardi’s mother had been sleeping on the first-floor couch for five months. We laser-scanned the full staircase geometry, fabricated a single curved rail that carries her from the foyer to the upstairs hallway in one continuous ride, and added a swivel-exit seat at the top. The oak banister and every spindle remain untouched. She slept in her own bedroom the night we finished.

Garden City cottage — straight rail on stone-tread stairs in a compact colonial

Garden City, RI Installed January 2026

A compact 1950s colonial in Garden City with stone-tiled stair treads and a narrow stairwell next to a wooden sideboard in the front hall. Mr. Patel’s knee replacement in October made the seven stone steps between the entry and the living area a daily risk. We bolted the straight rail directly into the stone treads using masonry anchors, mounted a folding seat that tucks flat against the wall when parked, and matched the rail color to the warm wood tones of the adjacent furniture. The original tile and stone were never cut. Mr. Patel was riding the same afternoon.

Auburn raised porch — weather-sealed outdoor lift on granite steps

Auburn, RI Installed December 2025

A 1930s wood-frame two-family in Auburn with a raised front porch, seven granite steps from the sidewalk, and salt-air corrosion from Narragansett Bay reaching inland. Mrs. Marchand uses a walker and had not left the house independently in four months. We anchored the outdoor rail directly into the stone-paved entry risers, sealed every bracket with marine-grade epoxy rated for Rhode Island’s freeze-thaw cycle, and installed 316-stainless fasteners. The cream-colored weather-resistant seat sits at the porch landing. The lift has run through two nor’easters and a January ice storm without a service call.

Oaklawn two-family — tenant install on carpeted stairs with landlord accommodation

Oaklawn, RI Installed November 2025

A 1948 two-family in Oaklawn where Mrs. Silva rents the second floor. Her landlord initially refused any modifications. We prepared the reasonable-accommodation request under the RI Fair Housing Practices Act (R.I. Gen. Laws §34-37). The install was a standard straight rail on carpeted stairs — 13 feet of track bolted through the carpet into the subfloor at the landing. The brown seat upholstery blends with the carpet tones, and the folding seat tucks flat so other tenants pass without ducking. If Mrs. Silva moves out, we offer flat-fee removal and the only evidence is small pilot holes hidden under the carpet pile.

Platform Lift

Western Cranston ranch — indoor wheelchair platform lift between split levels

Western Cranston, RI Installed October 2025

A 1972 raised ranch in Western Cranston where Mr. Kowalski is a full-time wheelchair user after a spinal injury. The split-level entry made a seated lift impractical. We installed an indoor inclined platform lift with a flat black anti-slip platform, yellow ADA-compliant high-visibility safety edges, and interlocking gates at both levels. The white handrail runs along the terracotta-toned wall of the stairway. Mr. Kowalski rolls his wheelchair directly onto the platform and rides from the garage entry to the kitchen in about 30 seconds.

Common Questions

Everything Cranston Homeowners Actually Ask

Straight answers about cost, installation, and funding — no sales fluff. Browse by topic or call us if you have a question that isn't here.

What does a stairlift cost in Cranston right now?

Straight rails in standard Cranston homes — the colonials in Knightsville, the triple-deckers in Edgewood and Auburn, the ranches in Garden City — run $2,800 to $5,500 installed. Curved rails, which you need for any staircase with a landing turn like the 1950s colonials throughout Knightsville, run $9,000 to $15,000 because the rail is manufactured to your exact staircase geometry. Outdoor models for raised porches and granite steps run $4,000 to $7,500. Every quote is written, honored for 30 days, and includes installation, rail, seat, battery backup, and the first service visit.

Can I get reimbursed through the Rhode Island Livable Home Modification Grant?

Yes. The RI Livable Home Modification Grant, administered by the Governor’s Commission on Disabilities, reimburses 50% of the cost of accessibility modifications up to $5,000. Stairlifts qualify. Eligibility requires RI residency and a household member with a disability or age 60+. The work must be performed by a CRLB-registered contractor, which we are. You pay upfront, then submit receipts and the signed award letter for reimbursement. Contact the Governor’s Commission on Disabilities at 401-462-0100 for application details.

Does RI Medicaid cover the cost through the waiver program?

Yes, through the Home and Community Care program administered by the RI Executive Office of Health and Human Services. Stairlifts qualify as environmental modifications under HCBS with a lifetime cap of roughly $10,000 — enough for a straight rail and most curved installs. Eligibility requires RI residency, age 65 or older or adult disability, Medicaid eligibility, and a nursing-facility level of care assessment. The entry point is the Office of Healthy Aging at 401-462-3000 — headquartered right here in Cranston at 74 West Road. We are a credentialed RI Medicaid home-mod provider. Your Case Manager writes the stairlift into your care plan and we bill EOHHS directly.

Are prices higher in Cranston than in other parts of Rhode Island?

Equipment prices are the same across Rhode Island — we do not inflate quotes based on neighborhood or zip code. What can vary slightly is install labor for unusual conditions: marine-grade hardware for homes in the Edgewood salt-air corridor, shimming brackets on century-old triple-decker treads that have settled unevenly, or the CRLB-registered electrical sub-contractor when an older home needs a new dedicated circuit. We tell you the line items upfront. No surprise surcharges.

A word from Luis

Cranston families usually call after the same moment — a parent grabs the banister in an Edgewood colonial and their hand slips on the worn oak, or a grandmother in an Auburn triple-decker hasn’t been to her own second-floor bedroom since Thanksgiving. The houses here were built in the 1920s through the 1960s, and nobody was thinking about stair safety for the people who would still be living in them 80 years later.

Here is what I do: drive to your house, measure your stairs with a laser, and hand you a written quote good for 30 days. No pressure. No upsells. Just the numbers on paper so you can talk it over with your family.
