Narrow Smith Hill triple-decker — slim-profile rail on the original 1912 oak stair

Smith Hill, RI Installed March 2026

A 1912 three-family on Chalkstone Avenue where Mrs. Almeida has lived on the second floor since 1978. Original quarter-sawn oak banister runs 13 feet up a 33-inch-wide stair. Slimmest profile rail bolted into tread wood without touching a single spindle, color-matched to the darker oak trim. The Providence VA Medical Center is four blocks up Chalkstone, which factored into the family’s choice — Mrs. Almeida’s husband is a Korean War veteran and the HISA grant covered the balance.

1798 College Hill Federal — curved rail past the original newel on Benefit Street

College Hill, RI Installed February 2026

A 1798 Federal mansion two blocks off Benefit Street with original mahogany staircase — three runs, two mid-landings, and a carved newel post at the base. Interior install required no Providence Historic District Commission Certificate of Appropriateness. Laser-scanned the full run on the first visit, fabricated a curved rail that threads past the newel without contact, installed in a single afternoon.

Federal Hill rowhouse off Atwells Avenue — padded seat for a post-stroke recovery

Federal Hill, RI Installed January 2026

An 1898 brick rowhouse a block off Atwells Avenue. Mr. Ricci, 78 and recovering from a stroke, had not been upstairs in nearly five months. Federal Hill’s narrow urban lots mean the stair is tight and the banister is pressed close to a plaster wall. Slim profile rail with premium padded seat and larger wraparound armrests for his weaker left side, soft-start motor so the ride doesn’t jolt. His granddaughter texted a photo of him at the kitchen table the next Sunday for Ricci family dinner.

West End rowhouse — outdoor stoop lift on salt-pitted granite steps

West End, RI Installed December 2025

A 1905 brick rowhouse near Broadway with a seven-step granite stoop that 120 winters of road salt had pitted and cracked. Cream-colored weather-sealed seat mounted on marine-grade epoxy-coated rail, anchored through the granite treads into the concrete foundation. Every metal component received 316-stainless fasteners as standard for the salt and Narragansett Bay moisture. Seat folds flat against the railing when not in use, keeping the stoop entry clear for the upstairs tenant. Mrs. Tavares uses it twice daily to collect mail and walk to the corner bodega.

Mount Pleasant colonial — straight rail on carpeted stairs blending with warm tones

Mount Pleasant, RI Installed November 2025

A 1936 colonial on Chalkstone with carpeted stairs from the entry to the second floor. Brown-upholstered seat matched the warm carpet tones so closely Mrs. Santos’s visiting sister didn’t notice it on her first walk through. Rail bolted through carpet into subfloor treads, fold-flat seat parks at the top landing near the hallway light switch. Mrs. Santos’s mother, who moved in after a fall last winter, rides it four times a day without assistance.

Platform Lift

Fox Point cottage — indoor wheelchair platform lift for Navy veteran

Fox Point, RI Installed October 2025

An 1895 cottage in Fox Point where Mr. Medeiros, a Portuguese-speaking Navy veteran who served out of Newport, uses a power wheelchair and cannot transfer to a seated stairlift. Installed an inclined wheelchair platform lift with a flat black anti-slip surface and yellow high-visibility safety edges on the indoor stairway between the ground floor and the living quarters. Funded through VA HISA grant ($6,800) — prefilled VA Form 10-0103 and coordinated with the Providence VA on Chalkstone Avenue, approved in five weeks. Entry hallway walls frame the lift near a window overlooking the front garden.

Common Questions

Everything Providence Homeowners Actually Ask

Straight answers about cost, installation, and funding — no sales fluff. Browse by topic or call us if you have a question that isn't here.

What does a stairlift actually cost in Providence right now?

Straight rails in standard Providence homes — a Smith Hill triple-decker, an Elmhurst bungalow, a Silver Lake ranch — run $2,900 to $5,800 installed. Curved rails, which we see constantly in College Hill Federal mansions, Benefit Street colonials, and Hope Village Italianates with their tight mid-landings, run $9,500 to $16,000 because the rail is fabricated to your exact staircase geometry. Outdoor stoop lifts for the granite and brick stoops common across the East Side and Federal Hill run $4,200 to $7,800 with the marine-grade coating standard. Every quote is written, honored for 30 days, and includes installation, rail, seat, battery backup, and the first service visit.

Are prices different in Providence than other Rhode Island cities?

Equipment prices are the same as the rest of Rhode Island — we don’t inflate quotes because you’re on Benefit Street or in Wayland Square. What varies slightly is install labor for unusual conditions: Providence Historic District Commission filings for exterior-visible work on Benefit Street or College Hill, board approval packets for East Side condos, and salt-air marine coating for homes within a mile of Narragansett Bay. We tell you the line items upfront. No surprise ‘East Side premiums.’

Do you charge extra for a Spanish- or Portuguese-language consultation?

No. Every Providence assessment can be conducted in Spanish at your request — our installer Luis is bilingual and has worked consultations in Silver Lake, Olneyville, West End, South Providence, and Central Falls for over a decade. For Portuguese (common in Fox Point and East Providence), Khmer, and Laotian we bring in a phone interpreter at our cost — never yours. Every printed quote, consent form, and operating manual is also available in Spanish. Zero surcharge.

Any hidden fees for an East Side condo or a Benefit Street colonial?

Our quote includes the board paperwork and any Providence Historic District Commission filings we handle for you — we’ve worked with buildings from College Hill down to Wayland Square, so the accommodation packets and PHDC templates are already drafted. What can add cost (rarely) is when a building requires its own engineer’s letter or PHDC asks for photographs and a site visit on an exterior stoop lift. If that happens, we tell you before we start — not after.

A word from Luis

Most Providence families call me after a bad winter — a slip on a salt-pitted granite stoop in Federal Hill, a father who hasn’t been downstairs in a Smith Hill triple-decker since Thanksgiving, a daughter calling from San Diego worried about her mother in an Elmhurst bungalow with steep stairs.

My job is simple: get to your house within 24 hours, measure once, and give you a price that’s honored for 30 days. No pressure. No upsells. En español si lo prefiere.
