We live in one of the older homes on Tenth Street, built in the early 1950s with narrow pine treads and a walnut banister my husband installed himself in the 1980s. New Mexico's Turquoise Care Community Benefit covers environmental modifications, including lifts, up to $5,000 every five years for members who meet nursing-facility level of care and financial eligibility. What can work is a stairlift prescribed through the VA's Prosthetic and Sensory Aids Service, which doesn't carry a fixed dollar cap the way HISA does. White Sands Habitat for Humanity runs a House by House rehabilitation program out of their Alamogordo office, 575-437-6562. It's a forgivable grant, no repayment as long as you stay in the home 15 years, for homeowners at or below 60% of Otero County's area median income, and it's aimed partly at seniors needing health-related modifications. One program that won't help: the state's RAMP grant through the Governor's Commission on Disability funds bathroom modifications and ramps only, not stairlifts, so don't count on that one.
