Stairlift Service Across Bremer County

Bremer County, IA

Waverly's five National Register historic districts — Sturdevant Southwest, Harmon & LeValley Northwest, Old Fourth Ward Southeast, the East Bremer Avenue Commercial District, and the Wartburg College Historic District — contain some of the oldest housing stock in Bremer County, with Victorians, Queen Annes, and Craftsman bungalows built between 1857 and 1920. These homes nearly always have steep, narrow staircases with hardwood treads — a straight rail bolted directly to the treads is the standard solution. The First Home Addition, developed just after WWII, has compact Cape Cods and ranches where shorter straight lifts work well. Newer subdivisions like Rolling Hills and Centennial Oaks mix ranch homes with two-story builds — curved rails come into play where stairs have landings or turns.

1902 Queen Anne in Sturdevant Southwest

Sturdevant Southwest Historic District, IA Installed March 2026

The Kesslers' 1902 Queen Anne on 2nd Avenue SW has an original oak staircase — steep, narrow, and beautiful. The straight rail was bolted directly into the treads so the 120-year-old woodwork stayed intact. The beige seat parks at the bottom landing beside the original newel post. Mrs. Kessler, 78, uses the upstairs bathroom independently for the first time in two years.

1910 Craftsman Bungalow in Old Fourth Ward

Old Fourth Ward Southeast Historic District, IA Installed February 2026

Compact Craftsman on 3rd Street SE with a stone-tread staircase — narrow but straight. The brown seat was mounted next to the original built-in sideboard at the bottom landing. Stone treads require carbide-tipped bits for the bracket bolts, which added about 20 minutes to the install. The compact layout meant the seat needed to park exactly at the bottom step to keep the hallway passable.

The Petersens' split-level in Rolling Hills has a six-step stone-paved entry from the driveway. The cream outdoor unit uses an IP55 weather-sealed rail with marine-grade components — built for Iowa freeze-thaw cycles. The rail was mounted a step higher than standard to keep the footplate clear of winter snow accumulation. Mr. Petersen, 76, uses it year-round to bring groceries in from the car.

Common Questions

Everything Waverly Homeowners Actually Ask

Straight answers about cost, installation, and funding — no sales fluff. Browse by topic or call us if you have a question that isn't here.

What does a stairlift cost in Waverly, Iowa?

A straight stairlift in Waverly starts at $2,800 installed. Curved lifts, which need custom rail fabrication after a laser measurement on site, start at $9,000. Outdoor lifts start at $4,000, and heavy-duty units up to 600 lb start at $5,050. Every quote includes the rail, seat, installation, and a 5-year parts warranty plus a lifetime rail warranty. We don't charge extra for homes in Waverly's historic districts — the install time is the same whether your staircase is in a Sturdevant Victorian or a First Home Addition ranch.

Does Medicare cover stairlift costs in Waverly?

Original Medicare (Parts A and B) does not cover stairlifts — they're classified as home modifications, not durable medical equipment. Some Medicare Advantage plans in Iowa offer a home-modification allowance, but coverage varies by plan. The most reliable funding in Bremer County comes from the VA HISA grant (up to $6,800 for service-connected veterans), the Iowa HCBS Elderly Waiver (up to $1,099 lifetime for home modifications), and Able Up Iowa low-interest loans. We also offer $79/month financing directly.

Are there any local Waverly programs that help pay for a stairlift?

Yes. The Northeast Iowa Area Agency on Aging (NEI3A), which serves Bremer County, can connect you to local resources and the Iowa HCBS Elderly Waiver. The Bremer County Veterans Affairs office at 203 1st Ave NE in Waverly helps veterans file for the HISA grant. Able Up Iowa, based in Waterloo, provides low-interest loans for home accessibility equipment — rates are well below credit-card APRs. We walk you through whichever program fits your situation at the free in-home assessment.

Why does a curved stairlift cost more than a straight one in Waverly homes?

Because every curved rail is custom-fabricated to match your exact staircase. In Waverly's older historic homes — especially Harmon & LeValley and Old Fourth Ward houses — staircases often have irregular turns, mid-landings, or odd rise-and-run dimensions that vary from house to house. We spend about an hour laser-measuring every step and turn, then the rail is bent and welded in a factory to those exact specs. A straight rail, by contrast, is a standard off-the-shelf length cut to fit on install day.

A word from Luis

I've put lifts into homes in all five of Waverly's historic districts — Sturdevant Southwest, Harmon & LeValley, Old Fourth Ward, you name it. The Victorians on 2nd Avenue SW have these beautiful oak staircases that are also incredibly steep. A straight rail bolts right into the treads and the wood stays intact. Out in Rolling Hills and Centennial Oaks, I see more split-levels from the 1970s and 80s — those need a different approach entirely.

The Cedar River shapes how we think about outdoor installs here. If the house is in the southeast part of town near the floodplain, we mount the outdoor lift a step higher and use the IP55 weather-sealed rail. Northeast Iowa winters are real — freeze-thaw cycles every March — and the marine-grade components on our outdoor units hold up through all of it. Most Waverly installs, indoors or out, take a single morning.

— Luis Ramírez, Waverly
Your Next Step

Ready to get started? It's simple.

Waverly sits right where the Cedar River bends through Bremer County, about 20 miles north of Waterloo. It's a town where people know each other — you see the same faces at the farmers market on Bremer Avenue, at Kohlmann Park on a summer evening, at a Wartburg Knights game in the fall. When a stairlift goes into a home here, it stays. We warranty the rail for life because we know we'll be back to service it years later and the homeowner will still remember the installer's name.

The funding side matters in a town like Waverly. With the Waterloo VA Clinic just 20 minutes south, the HISA grant — up to $6,800 for service-connected veterans — covers a straight lift outright. For non-veterans, the Iowa HCBS Elderly Waiver includes home modifications, and the Able Up Iowa loan program offers low-interest financing specifically for accessibility equipment. Between those programs and our own $79/month financing, most Waverly families find a path that works. Call Luis at the number above — he'll walk you through which option fits your situation.
