Expert Stairlift Installation in Union, NJ

Union Township's Ingersoll Terrace is still home to a small cluster of Thomas Edison's experimental poured-concrete houses — solid concrete interior walls and formed concrete plumbing that have outlasted a century of renovations most wood-frame houses never survive. That structural stubbornness runs through Union's 9.08 square miles of suburban stock, and it's a big part of why a stairlift, not a home remodel, is usually the more practical way to keep a second-floor bedroom or bathroom in daily reach for an aging homeowner. Whether the staircase runs through a 1920s house near Ingersoll Terrace or a split-level off Route 22, a rail can be fitted to the existing stair treads without touching load-bearing concrete or opening up walls.

Straight Stairlift

The standard solution for Union Township's postwar colonials — from Connecticut Farms to the Stuyvesant Avenue corridor.

More than 80% of the stairlifts we install in Union, NJ are straight-rail models — the floor plan of the postwar colonial almost always calls for it. The rail bolts into the stair treads, the seat and footrest fold flat for other household members, and battery backup keeps the lift running through the power interruptions that come with northeast ice storms. Most Union Township installs are complete in under four hours.

Connecticut Farms colonial — 14-step straight run with original oak banister preserved

Connecticut Farms, NJ Installed March 2026

A 1957 center-hall colonial in the Connecticut Farms neighborhood with an original painted oak banister the family had refinished two years earlier. The homeowners were explicit: nothing touches the banister. We bolted the rail into the stair treads only, matched the rail trim to the white baluster color, and the seat parks flush against the wall at the lower landing when not in use. Three months after install, Mrs. Sullivan's book group came by and none of them commented on the lift. That was the goal.

Stuyvesant Avenue split-level — dual-segment solution on a single install day

Stuyvesant Avenue corridor, NJ Installed February 2026

A 1963 split-level on Stuyvesant Avenue where Mr. Kowalski needed access to both the upper bedroom level and the lower family room level — two separate stair runs, each five and eight steps respectively. We ran both rail segments in a single install day, with matching seat upholstery on both units and a shared remote fob. The five-step lower run is a straight rail; the eight-step upper run has a 90-degree swivel seat at the top landing for safe step-off onto the hallway floor. Both were installed and tested before dinner.

Vauxhall Road raised ranch — compact rail on a short 9-step run

Vauxhall Road corridor, NJ Installed January 2026

A raised ranch on Vauxhall Road with only nine carpeted steps between the garage entry and the main living level — but those nine steps had become impossible for Mrs. Ogundimu following knee surgery. Short stair runs are deceptively tricky: the rail needs precise positioning at the bottom to keep the seat clear of the entry door swing. We measured the door arc on the first visit, offset the bottom park position by four inches, and fitted a power-fold footrest for extra clearance. Mrs. Ogundimu was using it the same afternoon.

Morris Avenue colonial — slim-profile rail for a narrow but frequently used staircase

Morris Avenue area, NJ Installed December 2025

A busy two-story colonial on Morris Avenue where Mr. Patel's mother lives with the family — the staircase is used constantly by three generations. The family's priority was a lift that folded completely out of the way so teenagers and visiting guests had full stair access. We spec'd the slim-profile rail with a fully folding seat and footrest: when parked at the bottom, it projects less than 11 inches from the wall. Family members walk past it without thinking about it, which was exactly the point.

Kenilworth Road area — JACC-funded install coordinated through Union County AAA

Kenilworth Road area, NJ Installed November 2025

Mrs. Marchetti is an 82-year-old widow who has lived in her Union Township colonial for 47 years. Her JACC care manager at the Union County Area Agency on Aging referred her to us after a falls risk assessment. We submitted the vendor paperwork directly to her care manager, received written authorization within 18 days, and scheduled the install the following week. The 1961 colonial had a textbook straight run — 14 steps, 36-inch tread width, standard overhead clearance. Done in three hours. Mrs. Marchetti called her care manager the same afternoon.

Platform Lift

Route 22 corridor — outdoor platform lift for a four-step raised entry porch

Route 22 corridor, NJ Installed October 2025

A 1968 colonial near the Route 22 corridor with a four-step raised entry porch and a family member returning home in a power wheelchair after a spinal cord injury. The porch setback ruled out a ramp — it would have projected five feet into the driveway. We installed a weatherproofed inclined platform lift on the side entry stair instead, keyed call station at driveway level, fold-up deck to keep the walk clear when not in use. The Nguyen family had the lift operational before their son's discharge date.

Common Questions

Everything Union Homeowners Actually Ask

Straight answers about cost, installation, and funding, no sales fluff. Browse by topic or call us if you have a question that isn't here.

How much does a stairlift cost for a home in Union, NJ?

Price comes down mostly to staircase length and whether it's straight or curved, and Union's housing stock — mainly single-family homes with straight interior staircases — keeps a lot of installs on the more predictable, lower end of that range. With Union's median household income sitting around $73,722, we also see more homeowners here paying out of pocket or financing than chasing the lowest possible bid.

Do the older houses near Ingersoll Terrace cost more to fit a rail in?

Sometimes, yes. The Edison-era poured-concrete houses on Ingersoll Terrace weren't built to any standard modern layout, so a curved or custom-fabricated rail is more likely there than in a newer split-level near Kean University, and custom rail always costs more than a straight run because it's built to the specific staircase rather than off a standard template.

Is a stairlift worth the cost compared to remodeling in a town like Union?

In a premium-affordability market like Union, where median household income runs about $73,722, a stairlift is still a fraction of the cost of converting to single-floor living or moving to a new house — it lets someone keep the upstairs bedrooms and bathroom in a home they already know instead of starting over somewhere else.

A word from Luis
I've measured staircases in Union homes wedged right up against the Garden State Parkway and I-78 interchange, and in the older poured-concrete houses near Ingersoll Terrace — two very different builds, same result: a stairlift bolts to the treads, not the walls, so it doesn't care whether the house dates to the Edison era or went up as a 1980s split-level near Kean University. With close to 17 percent of Union's residents over 65, most of my calls here are from adult children planning ahead for a parent still living independently in Putnam Manor or Brookside Heights, not panicked calls after a fall already happened.
