Stairlift Service Across Buchanan County

Buchanan County, MO

From the Gilded Age mansions of Museum Hill — where Queen Anne and Second Empire homes from the 1860s through 1900s line the bluffs with original walnut banisters and staircases untouched since McKinley — to the Hall Street Historic District's palatial homes and Craftsman cottages, our team has measured every staircase type St. Joseph produces. We know which Cathedral Hill homes fall inside the National Register district, which Wyatt Park Foursquares have the central entry stair with original oak, which Hyde Park postwar ranches have the garage step as the only fall risk, and which Belt Highway corridor split-levels from the 1960s have the mid-landing 90-degree turn requiring a custom curved rail. South Side Cape Cods round out our Buchanan County coverage.

Straight

Oak-tread straight rail in Museum Hill Queen Anne

Museum Hill, MO Installed March 2026

An 1889 Queen Anne on Museum Hill with the original walnut banister and carved newel post with a turned finial. The staircase has narrow heart-pine treads — original, slightly worn, and absolutely off-limits for anything but the lightest intervention. The straight rail bolts into the treads on the wall side, self-supporting, never touching the banister, spindles, or plaster. The beige seat parks at the upper landing below the stained glass transom window. Her neighbor across the street called us the following week.

Curved

Curved rail through 90-degree landing in Belt Highway split-level

South Side (Belt Highway), MO Installed February 2026

A 1967 split-level ranch off the Belt Highway — the most common staircase type we measure south of downtown St. Joseph. Six steps from the foyer to the main living level, a mid-landing with a 90-degree turn, then eight more steps to the bedrooms. Two other companies told the Carters they needed two separate lifts. We laser-scanned the staircase, fabricated a single curved rail that rides the full run in one continuous track, and installed a swivel-exit seat at the upper landing so Mrs. Carter steps off onto the hallway floor. The foundation had settled about a quarter inch over 59 years — we shimmed the rail brackets to compensate.

Straight

Straight rail on steep Cape Cod stairs in South Side

Hall Street, MO Installed January 2026

A 1918 Craftsman bungalow on Hall Street with wide oak treads, a tapered column at the newel, and a single straight run from the living room to the upstairs bedrooms. Mr. Lester is 81 and had been sleeping in the recliner downstairs since Thanksgiving after a knee replacement at Mosaic Life Care. The slim-profile straight rail fits on the tread side opposite the banister, the folding footrest keeps the stairs clear for his grandson, and Mr. Lester was back in his own bedroom that evening. The original oak banister remains completely untouched.

Outdoor

Outdoor porch lift on Cathedral Hill limestone steps

Cathedral Hill, MO Installed December 2025

An 1878 Italianate on Cathedral Hill with a raised front porch and seven exterior limestone steps. Mrs. Marsh is 84 and had not used the front door of her own home in over a year because the front steps were too steep — she had been coming and going through the basement. The outdoor rail is sealed against Missouri humidity, UV-coated against summer sun, and fitted with a leaf guard on the track because the mature elm drops leaves onto every surface from September through November. The lift ran through the full spring storm season and a June heat wave without a service call.

Garage stoop lift on concrete steps in Hyde Park ranch

Hyde Park, MO Installed November 2025

A 1955 brick ranch in Hyde Park with the classic St. Joseph layout: one story, attached garage, and three concrete steps from the garage slab up to the kitchen door. Mr. Pittman is a Korean War veteran, 91 years old, and had slipped on those steps twice. A full indoor stairlift was unnecessary because the house is single-story. The short stoop lift is anchored through the concrete tread, every penetration is sealed against snowmelt and Missouri spring rain, and the battery routes to an interior junction inside the mudroom. HISA covered the full cost through the St. Joseph VA Clinic.

Platform Lift

Indoor wheelchair platform lift in Wyatt Park Foursquare

Wyatt Park, MO Installed October 2025

A 1912 American Foursquare on Wyatt Park where Mrs. Reeves uses a power wheelchair full-time after a stroke and discharge from Mosaic Life Care. The classic central entry stair with its wide landing at the top made a seated stairlift impossible — she needed to ride her chair onto the platform and stay in it. The enclosed indoor wheelchair platform lift has bright yellow safety edges on the platform perimeter, automatic gate locks at both levels, and a keyed call station. The platform is rated for the chair plus occupant at 750 lbs combined, and the yellow edge strips are pressure-sensitive — any contact stops the platform instantly. The original quarter-sawn oak banister remains untouched.

Common Questions

Everything St. Joseph Homeowners Actually Ask

Straight answers about cost, installation, and funding — no sales fluff. Browse by topic or call us if you have a question that isn't here.

What does a stairlift actually cost in St. Joseph right now?

Straight rails in a standard St. Joseph home — the Foursquares on Wyatt Park, the Cape Cods on the South Side, the postwar ranches in Hyde Park — run $2,800 to $5,200 installed. Curved rails for Museum Hill Queen Annes with a landing turn and the Belt Highway split-levels with the 90-degree mid-landing run $9,000 to $15,000 because the rail is manufactured to your exact staircase geometry. Outdoor weather-sealed models for raised front porches and garage steps run $4,000 to $7,200. Every quote includes installation, rail, seat, tornado-rated anchor hardware, battery backup, and the first service visit.

Are prices higher in St. Joseph than Kansas City?

No. Equipment prices are identical whether you are on Museum Hill or in Overland Park. We do not add a mileage surcharge for St. Joseph, Savannah, Country Club, or anywhere in Buchanan or Andrew counties. What occasionally adds a line item is older-home electrical work — a dedicated 20-amp circuit in an 1880s Cathedral Hill house still running original knob-and-tube, which requires a locally licensed electrical contractor and a municipal permit. We quote that line item separately so you see it before you sign.

Can I use MO HealthNet to pay for some or all of the cost?

Yes. The MO HealthNet Aged and Disabled Waiver covers stairlifts as environmental accessibility adaptations under a cap of roughly $7,500 per waiver year. Eligibility requires Missouri residency, age 63 or older or adult disability, MO HealthNet-eligible income, and an assessment at nursing-facility level of care by the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services. Your entry point is the local Area Agency on Aging or the statewide DHSS line at 1-866-835-3505. We prepare the modification justification packet for your DHSS Care Coordinator.

Do you offer financing for families on a fixed income?

Yes — three lending partners with 0 percent APR for qualified buyers and low fixed-rate plans from $79 per month. Application is a soft credit pull with no hit to your score, takes about four minutes, and approval is usually instant. MHDC's Home Repair Opportunity Program also offers grants up to $24,999 for homeowners under 50 percent of area median income — stairlifts qualify as accessibility modifications. Many St. Joseph families combine financing with a partial HISA grant or the IRS medical deduction to bring the monthly payment under $50.

A word from Luis

St. Joseph calls split into two categories. One is a pre-1900 home on Museum Hill or Hall Street — original walnut banisters, carved newel posts, stained glass transoms, and an owner who cares about the millwork as much as the mobility. The other is a 1960s split-level off the Belt Highway, where a 90-degree landing turn is the difference between sleeping in the recliner and sleeping in your own bedroom.

I drive out, measure the staircase in person, and leave you with a written quote good for 30 days. No pressure. No upsells. No follow-up calls you did not ask for.

— Luis Ramírez, St. Joseph
