Straight Stairlift

The workhorse of San Francisco’s two-story flats — from Sunset Edwardians to Marina walk-ups to Richmond in-laws.

Roughly 60% of the stairlifts we install in San Francisco are this model. A single straight run, the rail bolts to your stair treads (never into the wall, never into the original Victorian banister), the seat and footrest fold up out of the way, and the battery backup keeps you moving through the next power outage. Most installs wrap in under four hours. CSLB-licensed under C-61/D-34.

Starting at $3,300 installed

What's Included

Sunset District Edwardian — straight rail on original fir hardwood treads

Sunset District, CA Installed March 2026

A classic stacked Edwardian two-flat off Noriega Street in the outer Sunset. Mrs. Wong owns the building and lives in the upper flat — one interior staircase, 13 treads of original Douglas fir. The assessment was conducted through a Cantonese phone interpreter at no charge. We fitted a slim straight rail that bolts into the existing fir treads without touching the original Edwardian wainscoting or the leaded-glass transom at the top of the stair. The rail finish was color-matched to the century-old fir. Install day, 3 hours. Mrs. Wong rode up to her kitchen for dinner that night.

Noe Valley Italianate Victorian — curved rail past a 90-degree upper landing

Noe Valley, CA Installed February 2026

An 1897 Italianate Victorian off 24th Street with the classic SF center-hall plan — front parlor, hall, staircase climbing to a landing with a 90-degree turn, then up to three bedrooms. The original redwood banister with turned spindles had been refinished once in 1984 and the family’s instruction was absolute: do not touch the banister. We laser-scanned the staircase, fabricated a curved rail that threads around the newel post and past the landing turn, and installed in a single afternoon. The rail is bolted entirely into the stair treads. Not a single spindle moved.

Bernal Heights garage-below — compact dual installation on a traditional SF layout

Bernal Heights, CA Installed January 2026

The defining SF layout: a 1948 garage-below home off Cortland Avenue. One-car garage at street level, 12 exterior concrete steps up to the front door, living room one floor up, bedrooms another floor above that. Mr. Ortega, 82, had stopped leaving the house in October. We installed two rails on the same day — an outdoor stoop rail mounted into the concrete treads plus an interior straight rail from the living room up to the bedroom floor. Both rails share a single remote. The interior rail threads through a compact traditional stairway with barely 33 inches of clearance. Consultation in Spanish at Mr. Ortega’s request.

Pacific Heights Queen Anne — 34-foot outdoor rail up a 28-step front stoop

Pacific Heights, CA Installed December 2025

A 1901 Queen Anne Victorian on Broadway near Webster. The front entry sits 28 concrete steps above the sidewalk — a 27% street grade is typical for this block of Pacific Heights. Dr. Hartmann, 84, had been using a cane and a strong banister grip for a year when his cardiologist at UCSF said no more. We spliced a 34-foot exterior rail in two segments, anchored into the existing concrete treads with stainless fasteners, added a marine-grade powder coating because Pacific Heights catches the fog coming across from Ocean Beach on summer afternoons, and sized the battery for extended outages. Ride time, sidewalk to porch: 1 minute 50 seconds.

Richmond District Edwardian — straight rail on carpeted treads for post-surgery recovery

Richmond District, CA Installed November 2025

A 1914 Edwardian flat four blocks from Clement Street in the inner Richmond. Mrs. Chen, 79, had been living on the ground floor for three months because the carpeted staircase had become impossible after a hip replacement at UCSF Parnassus. Her daughter called on a Tuesday. We booked a Mandarin phone interpreter for the Wednesday home assessment, measured Thursday, and installed Monday. The carpet was thick pile over the original fir — we anchored through both layers for a solid mount. The interpreter stayed on the line during the 20-minute user-training walkthrough so every safety feature was explained in Mandarin. Mrs. Chen slept in her own bedroom that night.

Platform Lift

Castro Painted Lady — wheelchair platform lift with high-visibility safety edges

Castro, CA Installed October 2025

A 1903 Stick-style Painted Lady in the Castro, rent-controlled under the SF Rent Ordinance. Mr. Thibault, 71, uses a power wheelchair and had been confined to the ground floor for over a year. His landlord initially resisted the install. We prepared the California FEHA reasonable-accommodation packet under Government Code § 12927, submitted it with a letter from his physician, and the accommodation was granted within 11 days. We then installed a vertical wheelchair platform lift with yellow high-visibility safety edges at the entry landing, a fold-up deck when not in use, and a keyed call station at the lower level. No rent increase. No tenant fee.

Common Questions

Everything San Francisco Homeowners Actually Ask

Straight answers about cost, installation, and funding — no sales fluff. Browse by topic or call us if you have a question that isn't here.

What does a stairlift actually cost in San Francisco right now?

Straight rails inside a standard Edwardian flat or a Sunset two-story run $2,800 to $5,500 installed. Curved rails, common around the original banister of a Victorian Painted Lady in Noe Valley, Alamo Square, or the Castro, run $9,000 to $15,000 because the rail is manufactured to your exact stair geometry. Long exterior runs up a Pacific Heights, Russian Hill, or Telegraph Hill front stoop run $6,500 to $14,000 depending on length. Every quote is written, honored for 30 days, and includes the rail, seat, battery backup, and the first service visit.

Are prices higher in Pacific Heights or the Marina than in the Sunset?

Equipment prices are identical from Bayview to Sea Cliff. We do not inflate quotes for a 94115, 94123, or 94118 ZIP. What varies is labor for unusual site conditions — historic banister preservation on a 1903 Queen Anne, a 35-step exterior run off a Russian Hill sidewalk, a marine-grade coating west of 19th Avenue where the fog and salt arrive together, or an SF DBI electrical permit for a dedicated circuit in a pre-1920s flat. Every line item is on the written quote before you sign, never after.

Do you charge extra for Cantonese, Mandarin, or Spanish service?

No. Our installer Luis is bilingual Spanish and English, so Mission, Excelsior, and Bernal calls are conducted in Spanish on request at no surcharge. For Cantonese and Mandarin-speaking families in the Richmond, Sunset, and Chinatown, we schedule a phone interpreter on the home assessment and on the final user-training session at zero charge. Every printed quote and operating manual is available in Spanish, and the safety card on the chair can be printed in traditional or simplified Chinese.

What does it cost to install two stairlifts in a garage-below home?

The classic San Francisco dual-install — an outdoor stoop rail from the sidewalk to the front door plus an interior rail upstairs — typically runs $7,500 to $12,000 total for two straight runs. We install both on the same day. The outdoor rail gets marine-grade coating and stainless fasteners as standard (required west of 19th Avenue), while the interior rail gets a standard finish. Both share the same battery backup technology. We see this layout weekly across Bernal Heights, Potrero Hill, the Sunset, and the Richmond.

A word from Luis

Most San Francisco families call me after the first near-miss on the interior stair of a Painted Lady in Alamo Square, on the 28 exterior steps up from the street to a Pacific Heights front door, or on the tight 180-degree turn at the top of an Edwardian flat in the Marina. The staircase that has worked for 110 years stops working in a single afternoon.

My job is simple: be at your house within 24 hours, laser-measure the stairs once, and leave you with a written quote that is honored for 30 days. No pressure, no upsells, no "Pacific Heights premium." CSLB-licensed, verify us at cslb.ca.gov. En español si lo prefiere. Cantonese and Mandarin through an interpreter at no charge.
