Stairlift Service Across Richmond County

Richmond County, VA

From the Queen Anne row houses of The Fan District — one of the largest urban Victorian neighborhoods in America — to the Federal-era homes on Church Hill overlooking the James River, from Monument Avenue's Colonial Revival mansions to the narrow 1910 row houses of Jackson Ward, our team has mapped every staircase geometry Richmond produces. We know which Fan District blocks have three-story runs with carved newel posts, which Church Hill homes need outdoor stoop lifts, and which Windsor Farms estates require custom curved rails. Carytown, Byrd Park, Oregon Hill, Ginter Park, Highland Park, Northside, Stratford Hills — we've installed in all of them.

1904 Fan District Queen Anne — rail matched to original oak banister on hardwood treads

The Fan District, VA Installed March 2026

A three-story Queen Anne on Hanover Avenue with an original 1904 oak banister the family had already refinished twice. The Commission of Architectural Review doesn't regulate interiors, but the Pattersons didn't care about regulation — they cared about the wood. We color-matched the rail finish to the existing oak grain, bolted into the hardwood treads only, and parked the chair at the second-floor landing where it folds flat against the wall. Their daughter walked past it three times before she realized it was there.

Monument Avenue Colonial Revival — curved rail with 90° turn at the upper landing

Monument Avenue, VA Installed February 2026

A 1920s Colonial Revival on Monument Avenue — National Historic Landmark district, Commission of Architectural Review oversight on exterior changes, and a homeowner who told us point-blank that a stairlift 'cannot look like hospital equipment.' We specified the slim-profile rail in a brushed bronze finish, neutral linen upholstery, and mounted it so the chair parks flush under the second-floor archway. The curved rail threads past the original balustrade at the 90-degree upper landing turn. Mrs. Ashworth still hosts her garden club in the front parlor. Nobody has mentioned the lift.

1840s Church Hill Federal — compact rail beside original turned newel post

Church Hill, VA Installed January 2026

An 1840s Federal-style home two blocks from St. John's Episcopal with a steep staircase and a prized turned newel post the Jeffersons have maintained for decades. The original ship's-ladder pitch made a compact, slim-profile rail essential. We mounted the rail along the inside wall with a folding footrest so the chair tucks flat when parked beside the antique sideboard at the base. The stone-tile foyer and traditional millwork frame the lift naturally. Mrs. Jefferson's visiting grandchildren still run up and down around her, just like always.

Jackson Ward raised stoop — outdoor lift on front porch entry steps

Jackson Ward, VA Installed December 2025

A 1910 row house on Second Street in Jackson Ward — the historic Black business district — where the raised front porch has eight concrete steps from the sidewalk that iced over every winter. Mrs. Banks had fallen twice on the front steps in the past three years. We installed a weather-sealed outdoor stoop lift with a cream-colored seat, powder-coated rail that matches the existing porch ironwork, and UV-stabilized upholstery rated for Richmond's humid summers. The keyed lockout at the bottom prevents unauthorized use, and the battery keeps running through winter ice events.

Ginter Park colonial — straight rail on carpeted stairs with swivel-exit at top landing

Ginter Park, VA Installed November 2025

A 1940s colonial in Ginter Park with 14 carpeted treads and a landing that opens onto the upstairs hallway. Mr. Coleman's biggest concern wasn't the ride — it was stepping off at the top, where his wife had slipped the previous winter. We used extended mounting bolts that penetrate through the thick carpet pad into the subfloor for a rock-solid mount. The brown upholstery matches the carpet tone, and the power-swivel seat rotates 90 degrees at the upper landing so she steps off onto the hallway floor, not the top step. Their VA HISA grant through McGuire covered $6,800.

Platform Lift

Stratford Hills split-level — outdoor wheelchair platform with yellow safety edges

Stratford Hills, VA Installed October 2025

The Williams's daughter uses a power wheelchair and their Stratford Hills split-level has a raised front entry with six steps — a common layout in Richmond's mid-century neighborhoods south of the James River. We installed an inclined platform lift with high-visibility yellow safety edges, a fold-up deck when not in use, and a keyed call station at the lower landing. It has run through one full Richmond summer and two ice storms without a single service call. The platform is rated to 550 lbs and the enclosed motor handles Richmond's heat and humidity without throttling.

Common Questions

Everything Richmond Homeowners Actually Ask

Straight answers about cost, installation, and funding — no sales fluff. Browse by topic or call us if you have a question that isn't here.

What does a stairlift actually cost in Richmond right now?

Straight rails in standard Richmond homes run $2,800 to $5,500 installed. Curved rails — common in Fan District Queen Annes, Church Hill Federals, and Monument Avenue Colonial Revivals with mid-landing turns — run $9,000 to $15,000 because the rail is manufactured to your staircase geometry. Outdoor models for Richmond's hillside homes with 8- to 15-step exterior runs cost $4,000 to $7,500. Every quote is written, honored for 30 days, and includes installation, rail, seat, battery backup, and the first service visit.

Are prices higher in historic neighborhoods like The Fan or Church Hill?

Equipment prices are the same citywide — we don't inflate quotes for Monument Avenue addresses or Windsor Farms homes. What can vary slightly is install labor when a staircase is unusually steep (common in pre-1850s Church Hill Federals), unusually narrow (Jackson Ward row houses), or when the homeowner needs the rail finish color-matched to original Victorian millwork. Every line item is on the written quote.

Does the Commission of Architectural Review add costs in historic districts?

CAR reviews exterior-visible changes in Richmond's Old and Historic Districts — The Fan, Church Hill, Monument Avenue, Jackson Ward, Shockoe Slip. Interior stairlift installs are not under CAR jurisdiction. Outdoor installs on front-facing stoops may require a Certificate of Appropriateness, which we file at no charge. In 14 years we've never had a Richmond CAR application denied for a stairlift.

Can I combine the HISA grant with the Virginia Livable Home Tax Credit?

Yes — and most Richmond veterans should. The VA HISA grant covers up to $6,800 for service-connected disabilities. The Virginia Livable Home Tax Credit through DHCD returns up to $6,500 on your state income taxes for accessibility modifications. They come from different sources and stack. On a $12,000 curved rail install, a veteran with a service-connected disability can recover over $13,000 between the two programs. We file both applications as standard service.

A word from Luis

Most Richmond families call me after someone has already rearranged their life around the stairs — a retired veteran in Church Hill sleeping on the first floor because the bedrooms are upstairs, a widow in a Fan District row house whose daughter found her crawling up the stairs on her hands and knees, a Monument Avenue couple who stopped hosting because the dining room is on the second floor.

I drive to your house within 24 hours, measure once, and give you a written price honored for 30 days. No pressure. No upsells. If you're using a VA benefit through McGuire, I bring the HISA paperwork with me on the first visit.
