Straight Stairlift

The workhorse of Portland's craftsman and Four Square homes — from Alameda bungalows to Sellwood Four Squares.

Over 65% of the stairlifts we install in Portland are this model. A single straight run, the rail bolts to your stair treads (never into the wall or banister), the seat and footrest fold up out of the way, and the battery backup keeps you moving through the next winter ice storm. Most Portland straight-rail installs wrap in under four hours, finish colors matched to original fir, oak, or heart-pine where it matters — which is basically every craftsman and Four Square in NE and SE Portland.

Stairlift Service Across Multnomah County

Multnomah County, OR

From the 1910s craftsman bungalows of Alameda, Beaumont-Wilshire, and Grant Park to the 1920s Tudor Revivals of Laurelhurst and Eastmoreland, from the diamond streets of Ladd's Addition to the Four Squares of Hawthorne, Richmond, and Sellwood-Moreland, our team has mapped every pre-1930 block in the city. We know which Mount Tabor homes sit on the old volcano grade, which Nob Hill rowhouses still have the original fir banisters, and which Kenton, St. Johns, and Overlook homes need a Vietnamese or Russian interpreter on the first visit.

Because Portland is built against the West Hills and we cover all of Multnomah County, we staff dedicated visits for Council Crest, Healy Heights, Multnomah Village, and Hollywood — so you never wait on a tech driving up from Salem.

1914 Alameda craftsman — straight rail on original heart-fir treads

Alameda, OR Installed March 2026

A 1914 craftsman bungalow two blocks off NE Regents Drive — original heart-fir treads, a fir banister the family's grandfather refinished in 1978, and a narrow front stair running straight off the entry hall. Mrs. Halvorsen's first question was whether we'd have to drill into the banister. We never touch the banister on any craftsman install — the rail bolts into the treads only. We matched the rail finish to the aged fir, left the original millwork completely alone, and walked her through the remote at the kitchen table. The chair parks flush at the landing and is practically invisible from the front sitting room.

1925 Laurelhurst Tudor Revival — curved rail past the original oak newel

Laurelhurst, OR Installed February 2026

A 1925 Tudor Revival on NE Floral Place inside the Laurelhurst Historic District with a tight 90-degree curved stair and an original quarter-sawn oak banister the family was not about to let anyone touch. Because the install is entirely interior, Portland Historic Landmarks Commission had nothing to review — no exterior change, no sign-off required. We laser-scanned the staircase during the first visit, fabricated a curved rail that threads past the oak newel post without grazing a single spindle, and bolted the track into the existing fir treads only. Mr. Bergquist, who hadn't been upstairs in five months after a hip replacement at OHSU, rode it that same afternoon.

Council Crest hillside — 34-step outdoor run from sidewalk to porch, marine-grade rail

Council Crest, OR Installed January 2026

A classic West Hills lot off SW Greenway Avenue where the house sits roughly 26 feet above the street — 34 concrete and wood-stringer steps from the sidewalk to the front porch. We fabricated a long custom outdoor rail, shipped it with marine-grade epoxy coating standard for 36 inches of annual Portland rain and the moss that grows on anything left outdoors longer than a season, and added the anti-slip footpad upgrade because wet fir treads are the single biggest reason Portland seniors fall. The rail anchor depth was spec-checked for the loose volcanic soil on the slope. Keyed call station at the lower landing so the chair can be summoned from the car. Mrs. Iverson uses it twice a day to bring groceries up from the curb.

Sellwood-Moreland Four Square — heavy-duty 600 lb rail, post-surgical recovery

Sellwood-Moreland, OR Installed December 2025

A 1922 Four Square in Sellwood-Moreland — wide treads, a straight 14-step run from the entry hall to the second floor, and a homeowner who needed significantly more than the standard 300 lb capacity following a weight-management surgery at Providence Portland. Mr. Johansson is 6'1" and needed the wider padded seat for a comfortable recovery. We installed the heavy-duty reinforced frame with a 22-inch seat and 600 lb capacity, cold-sealed the motor housing against the Willamette Valley moisture, and had the unit fully operational the same afternoon. He came home from the hospital the following week and rode it from the front door.

Pearl District loft conversion — slim-profile rail on a floating steel stair

Pearl District, OR Installed November 2025

A post-2010 Pearl District loft conversion with a floating steel stair, polished concrete treads, and a homeowner whose first sentence was that she refused to let this look like a hospital. We specified the slim-profile premium rail in matte charcoal that matches the exposed steel, and bolted the rail into the stair stringers rather than the treads themselves to preserve the floating aesthetic. The stair width was tight enough that standard seat width would have obstructed the run — the slim folding seat clears the wall with two inches to spare. The building HOA approved the reasonable-accommodation packet in seven business days under ORS 659A.421. Ms. Ahmadi still hosts her monthly dinner club on the upper level.

Healy Heights — outdoor curved rail with grade-change landing, VA HISA funded

Healy Heights, OR Installed October 2025

A Healy Heights home off SW Council Crest Drive with 24 exterior steps from the driveway to the front door — but not a single straight run. The stair climbs eight steps, breaks left across a concrete landing, then climbs sixteen more at a slightly different grade. A straight outdoor rail couldn't follow the geometry. We fabricated a custom curved outdoor rail with a landing transition, shipped it with marine-grade epoxy coating and the cold-pack battery rated to -20°F for Portland's January ice storms, and anchored the brackets with depth-checked lags into the loose volcanic soil. Col. Whitaker qualified for a VA HISA grant through the Portland VA — we prefilled Form 10-0103, walked it through the prosthetics office, and had the prescription back in three weeks. It rode through the first November atmospheric river without a service call.

Common Questions

Everything Portland Homeowners Actually Ask

Straight answers about cost, installation, and funding — no sales fluff. Browse by topic or call us if you have a question that isn't here.

What does a stairlift actually cost in Portland right now?

Straight rails in standard Portland homes — a Beaumont-Wilshire craftsman, a Sellwood Four Square, a Richmond bungalow — run $2,900 to $5,700 installed. Curved rails, which you'll see in 1920s Laurelhurst Tudors, Eastmoreland Prairie-school homes, and Irvington colonials, run $9,200 to $15,500 because the rail is manufactured to your exact staircase geometry. Outdoor hillside rails for the long runs from sidewalk to porch in Council Crest, Healy Heights, and the West Slope run $4,500 to $8,500 with marine-grade rail coating standard. Every quote is written, honored for 30 days, and includes installation, rail, seat, battery backup, and the first service visit.

Are Portland prices higher than Beaverton or Gresham?

Equipment prices are identical across Multnomah, Washington, and Clackamas counties — we don't inflate quotes for an Alameda or Eastmoreland address. What varies slightly is install labor for unusual conditions: long West Hills outdoor runs (every foot of custom rail adds cost), Portland Historic Landmarks Commission filings when a home sits inside Ladd's Addition, Irvington, or the King's Hill district, and Oregon BCD electrical permit pulls when an older craftsman needs a new dedicated 120V circuit. We list the line items upfront. No surprise Portland premiums.

Do you charge extra for a bilingual consultation?

No. Every Portland assessment can be conducted in Spanish at your request — Luis is bilingual and has handled consultations from the Jade District to outer SE for years. Every printed quote, consent form, and operating manual is also available in Spanish. For Vietnamese along 82nd Avenue, Russian and Ukrainian in outer Southeast, and Cantonese for older Chinese-American families, we bring in a phone interpreter at our cost — never yours. Zero surcharge.

Any hidden fees for a Pearl District condo or HOA building?

Our quote includes the HOA and condo-board paperwork we handle for you — we've worked with buildings from the Pearl District to South Waterfront, so the reasonable-accommodation letters are already templated. Under Oregon's Fair Housing Act (ORS 659A.421) and the federal Fair Housing Amendments Act, HOAs must permit reasonable accessibility accommodations for disabled residents, which removes most of the friction. What can rarely add cost is a Historic Landmarks Commission review if the install is exterior-visible in Ladd's Addition, Irvington, or King's Hill. If that happens, we tell you before we start — not after.

A word from Luis

Most Portland families call me after the same kind of moment — a 78-year-old in a 1912 Alameda craftsman who hasn't been upstairs since Thanksgiving, a West Hills couple staring at the 34-step run from the street up to the front porch in Council Crest, a daughter in Beaverton worried about her father in a Laurelhurst Tudor with an oak banister nobody is allowed to touch.

My job is simple: drive to your house within 24 hours, measure once, and give you a written price that's honored for 30 days. No pressure. No upsells. En español si lo prefiere.
