The city stretches along the Gulf of Mexico in the eastern Florida Panhandle with about 9 miles of sugar-white shoreline on the Emerald Coast. It is exposed to dangerous rip currents and major storms, including Category 5 Hurricane Michael in 2018.

Panama City Beach spent the early 2000s tearing down old motels and beach cottages to put up condo towers and bigger single-family houses, and by 2020 the city's housing stock had grown to just over 20,000 units — with nearly six in ten of them sitting empty most of the year as second homes and vacation rentals. A lot of the newer houses went up on pilings or with a raised main floor to meet flood requirements, which means a full flight of stairs just to reach the front door. Out here a stairlift is less about "getting old" and more about keeping a beach house usable once a set of exterior steps stops being a minor annoyance.

What makes Panama City Beach different
Why a stairlift installed in Panama City Beach, FL is planned around the way this specific community lives, not stamped out from a one-size-fits-all template.
An early-to-mid-2000s construction boom transformed Panama City Beach as older homes and motels were replaced by high-rise condominiums and larger houses. Its 2020 stock of 20,052 housing units carried a 59.9 percent vacancy rate, reflecting heavy seasonal and vacation-home use.
Source ↗Panama City Beach is a tourism-driven resort economy and spring-break destination, with a permanent population of 18,094 in 2020. Its median age of 45.7 years and 20.9 percent of residents aged 65 or older point to a notable retiree presence among year-round homeowners.

We cover all of Bay County's beach side. In Laguna Beach, low-density raised-foundation homes near the surf usually need a full-flight straight rail from the entry up to the living level. Lower Grand Lagoon mixes older coastal ranches with newer marina builds, so we see both compact rails and longer runs. Bid-A-Wee beachfront split-levels separate bedrooms by a half-flight that suits a short rail. Sunnyside's 1970s beach cottages have the narrow enclosed stairwells where a wall-hugging rail matters most, and Breakfast Point's single-family homes east of Highway 79 take standard straight installs. We also serve Delwood Beach, West Bay and Gulf Lagoon Beach.

Hear It From Your Panama City Beach Neighbors
Common situations we get called out for across Panama City Beach's neighborhoods. Drag to scroll, or use the arrows and dots below.
Luis came out to our condo in Lower Grand Lagoon two days after I called. My mother had stopped using the upstairs entirely — she was sleeping on the pullout couch. He measured that afternoon and had a straight rail in by Friday. Three and a half hours, no mess, and she's back in her own bedroom.
We bought a raised two-story in Laguna Beach thinking the stairs wouldn't be an issue. Two years later my husband's hip gave out. The curved rail Luis spec'd wraps around the upper landing like it was original to the house. The VA HISA paperwork was two forms and the PCB clinic signed off fast — out of pocket was nothing.
My parents' place in Bid-A-Wee had one of those narrow, steep 1960s staircases. I figured no lift would fit. Luis measured it and said 'tight, but doable.' He was right — the rail sits closer to the wall than I thought possible, and Dad uses it every morning to get down for coffee. The battery backup already kicked in twice during summer thunderstorms.
Called about a stairlift for my mother-in-law's house in Sunnyside. She'd fallen once already and was scared of the stairs after. Luis installed a straight rail on carpeted treads in under three hours, walked her through the controls twice, and left his cell number. That was six months ago and the lift hasn't skipped once.
Our Breakfast Point home has stairs from the garage up to the main floor, and my wife's knee surgery made those steps a daily ordeal. The outdoor-rated lift handles the humidity and the driving rain just fine, and the marine-grade finish still looks new a year later. Luis even handled the HOA paperwork so we never had to deal with the board.
My brother uses a wheelchair, and we'd been told a stairlift couldn't help. Luis showed us the indoor platform lift instead — a flat deck with yellow safety edges that runs the same rail. We put it on the straight staircase in our Delwood Beach place and it folds flat against the wall when nobody's using it.

Everything Panama City Beach Homeowners Actually Ask
Straight answers about cost, installation, and funding, no sales fluff. Browse by topic or call us if you have a question that isn't here.
What does a stairlift cost for a typical Panama City Beach home?
Straight-rail lifts for a single flight generally run in the $2,000–$5,000 range installed. Curved rails — the kind you need for a stairwell with a landing or a turn, which shows up a lot in the larger houses built during the 2000s construction boom here — usually land closer to $10,000–$15,000 or more, since the rail has to be custom-measured for that exact stairway.
Do PCB's condo towers or older motel-conversion buildings need anything different?
Most of the high-rise condo towers have elevators, so a stairlift request in those buildings is usually for a loft-style unit or a townhome-style layout within the complex rather than the main lobby stairs. It's the single-family houses and duplexes — especially ones with a raised first floor — where we quote stairlifts most often.
Does building on pilings or a raised foundation add to the install cost?
Sometimes. An exterior stair run up to the raised main floor is often longer than an interior staircase, and it needs weather-rated components — a covered or all-weather rail and a corrosion-resistant carriage — because of how much salt air and humidity these units take on this close to the Gulf. That pushes the quote up from a bare-minimum straight-rail price, but it's still well under what a curved interior rail costs.
Does hurricane exposure change what kind of stairlift gets installed here?
It changes what we spec, not whether a stairlift is possible. After Category 5 Hurricane Michael hit the Panhandle in 2018, a lot of rebuilt and newer PCB homes sit up higher, so exterior lifts need outdoor-rated tracks, weatherproof seat covers, and hardware that won't corrode from Gulf salt air. We also make sure the lift has a manual lowering option in case of a power outage during storm season.
Can a stairlift go on the exterior stairs of a beach house built on pilings?
Yes — that's actually one of the more common requests along the beach side of town. It needs an outdoor-rated rail system rather than a standard indoor unit, plus regular maintenance checks since salt air and humidity are harder on exposed metal here than in an inland Bay County home.
How long does installation take once I've decided on a stairlift?
A straight-rail lift can often be measured and installed within about a week, sometimes in a single visit once the unit's on hand. Curved or custom outdoor rails take longer because the track has to be fabricated to the exact stairway or exterior stair run, so plan on a few weeks from measurement to installed lift.
Does Florida Medicaid cover a stairlift for someone in Bay County?
It can, but it's not guaranteed. Florida's Statewide Medicaid Managed Care Long-Term Care Program (SMMC LTC) lists "Home Accessibility Adaptation" as a covered service to help someone move safely at home, but stairlifts aren't named specifically — whether one gets approved depends on your managed-care plan and requires prior authorization tied to your plan of care. Start by calling the state's Elder Helpline system at 1-800-963-5337, or Advantage Aging Solutions, the Area Agency on Aging that covers Bay County (PSA 2), to get screened for eligibility.
Will VA benefits pay for a stairlift if I'm a veteran in Panama City Beach?
Not through the HISA grant — the VA's Home Improvements and Structural Alterations program (up to $6,800 lifetime for service-connected veterans, $2,000 for others) specifically excludes stair glides and stairlifts by name. What can cover a stairlift is the VA's Prosthetic & Sensory Aids Service, when a lift is medically prescribed as part of your care — that route doesn't have a fixed dollar cap. The nearest point of contact for Bay County veterans is the Panama City Beach VA Clinic at (850) 636-7000.
What if I don't qualify for Medicaid or VA prosthetics — are there other options in Bay County?
The FAAST New Horizon Loan Program offers low-interest loans, roughly $3,000 to $30,000, that can be used for a stairlift or other home modifications — worth confirming the current cap with FAAST directly. If cash flow is the issue rather than access to credit, Florida's Homestead Exemption plus the Senior Additional Homestead Exemption can reduce your property tax base by up to $50,000 each, which frees up money elsewhere even though it's not a direct grant. The Bay County Council on Aging is also a good local starting point — they administer DOEA-funded home care programs in the county and can point you toward whatever you qualify for.

I've done installs in Panama City Beach where the garage sits at ground level and the actual living floor is a full story up — that's just how a lot of these places got rebuilt after Hurricane Michael came through in 2018 and pushed people to build higher. Salt air off the Gulf eats through cheap hardware fast, so anything within a few blocks of Front Beach Road gets marine-grade brackets from me, no exceptions. Most of my calls here aren't people who've lived in the same house for forty years — they're folks who bought in to actually live here year-round, and stairs weren't on their radar until they were.
Ready to get started? It's simple.
Panama City Beach runs on stairs — raised foundations, split-levels, beach houses on pilings, condos with garage-to-living-room flights. That layout works until a knee or a hip turns it into the day's hardest task. A stairlift puts every room back in reach without a remodel.
