Stairlift Service Across Honolulu County

Honolulu County, HI

Makakilo stretches from Makakilo Lower — where original 1960s and 70s homes sit closer to the Ewa Plain — up to Makakilo Upper, which includes neighborhoods like Palehua Heights (homes from 1979), Kumulani (custom builds from the 1990s–2000s), and Royal Ridge (1990s). On the eastern slope, Kahiwelo offers newer DR Horton homes built between 2008–2016. West Hills and Anuhea fill out the mid-slope with a mix of single-family homes and townhouses. The elevation gain across Makakilo — roughly 200 to over 1,000 feet — means many homes are split-level or two-story with stairs connecting the main living areas to bedrooms above.

Hardwood Landing Makeover in Kumulani

Kumulani, HI Installed February 2026

The Nakamuras' Kumulani home, built in 2002, has a straight hardwood staircase with dark oak treads leading to the second-floor bedrooms. Mrs. Nakamura was avoiding the stairs after a fall, sleeping on the living room sofa. Luis measured the 14-foot run and installed a beige straight stairlift in one morning — rail bolted to the treads, no wall work. The seat parks at the bottom when not in use, leaving the upstairs hallway clear.

Curved Rail Around a Half-Wall in Palehua Heights

Palehua Heights, HI Installed March 2026

The Petersons' 1982 Palehua Heights home features a staircase with a 90-degree turn at the upper landing, wrapping around a half-wall beneath a chandelier. The curved geometry ruled out a straight lift. After a 1-hour laser measurement session, the custom-bent rail arrived two weeks later and installed in an afternoon. The brown upholstered seat parks at the upper landing, letting Mr. Peterson reach the bedrooms without assistance.

Compact Straight Install in a West Hills Townhouse

West Hills, HI Installed January 2026

The Santos townhouse in West Hills has stone-tile stairs leading up from a narrow entryway near a wooden sideboard. Space was tight — the staircase is only 34 inches wide. Luis used a slim-profile straight rail and positioned the seat to fold up against the wall when parked. The brown upholstery blends with the tile tones, and the lift clears the sideboard cabinet by three inches at the bottom.

Weather-Sealed Outdoor Lift in Kahiwelo

Kahiwelo, HI Installed April 2026

The Yamamotos' Kahiwelo home has an exterior staircase from the driveway to the front entry — a dozen stone-paved steps exposed to full sun, trade winds, and salt air from the leeward coast. Luis installed an IP55-rated outdoor stairlift with marine-grade coating and a weatherproof cover. The cream-colored seat sits on a rail that handles Hawaii's humidity and corrosion conditions without rust. Mr.

Carpeted Staircase Retrofit in Makakilo Lower

Makakilo Lower, HI Installed November 2025

The Garcias' 1978 home in Makakilo Lower has carpeted stairs leading from the tiled ground floor to the upper bedrooms. Mrs. Garcia's arthritis made climbing painful. Luis mounted a straight rail along the carpeted treads — the brown upholstered seat matches the neutral carpet tone. The lift parks neatly at the bottom near the tiled entryway, and the fold-up carriage keeps the stairs passable for the rest of the family.

Platform Lift

Indoor Wheelchair Platform in Royal Ridge

Royal Ridge, HI Installed January 2026

The Kekoas' Royal Ridge home needed a solution for their teenage son, who uses a wheelchair full-time. The staircase is straight but standard stairlifts won't work with a chair. Luis installed an inclined platform lift — a flat black deck with yellow safety edges, a white handrail, and automatic folding ramp at each landing. The platform rides along a reinforced rail bolted to the treads and supports up to 600 lb.

Common Questions

Everything Makakilo Homeowners Actually Ask

Straight answers about cost, installation, and funding — no sales fluff. Browse by topic or call us if you have a question that isn't here.

How much does a stairlift cost in Makakilo?

Straight stairlifts in Makakilo start at $2,800 installed. Curved models, which need a custom rail bent to match your stair turn, start at $9,000. Outdoor lifts for exterior stairs — common on Makakilo hillside homes — start at $4,000 and include IP55 weather sealing for Hawaii's salt air and humidity. Heavy-duty units rated for 600 lb start at $5,050. Every quote includes the assessment visit, rail fabrication, installation, and a 5-year warranty.

Do Makakilo homes typically need straight or curved stairlifts?

Most Makakilo homes — especially in neighborhoods like Kahiwelo, West Hills, and Makakilo Lower — have straight staircases and need a straight rail. In custom-built neighborhoods like Kumulani and Palehua Heights, you sometimes find staircases with a turn or landing, which call for a curved rail. The only way to know is an in-home measurement. Luis checks every stair during the free assessment and tells you exactly what fits.

Are there extra costs to install a stairlift in a hillside Makakilo home?

No. The assessment is free, and the quoted price covers everything — rail fabrication, delivery to Makakilo, installation labor, and testing. Even on steep hillside lots where access can be tight, the install team manages without add-on fees. The only variable is straight vs. curved: curved rails cost more because the rail is custom-bent after a 1-hour laser measurement session on site.

Does homeowners insurance cover stairlift installation in Makakilo?

Most standard homeowners policies in Hawaii do not cover stairlifts, since they're considered home modifications rather than durable medical equipment. Some long-term care riders might contribute. We recommend checking with your insurer — and also looking at the funding options available through VA and Medicaid, which often cover the full cost.

A word from Luis

I've been installing stairlifts in Makakilo since the early 2000s — from the original 1970s homes in Palehua Heights to the newer DR Horton builds in Kahiwelo. The hillside layout here is unlike anywhere else on Oahu. A lot of the older Makakilo Lower homes have split-level designs where the living area is up a half-flight from the entry. In Upper Makakilo, you see more two-story homes where the stairs are the main route to the bedrooms.

Either way, the job is the same: 3 hours, rail bolted to the treads, nothing to patch afterward. The salt air on this side of the island means outdoor lifts need the IP55 coating — I learned that the hard way about 10 years ago on a West Hills install. Now every outdoor unit we put in on the leeward side gets the marine-grade treatment. It costs a little more up front, but I've never had to replace one.

— Luis Ramírez, Makakilo
Your Next Step

Ready to get started? It's simple.

Makakilo's elevation is what makes it special — those panoramic views from Pearl Harbor to Ko Olina are part of why people choose to live on these hillsides. But the same slopes that create those views also mean stairs are unavoidable in most homes here. A stairlift doesn't change the view or the layout. It just means the stairs stop being an obstacle.

Whether you're in a 1970s original in Makakilo Lower, a custom build in Kumulani, or a newer DR Horton home in Kahiwelo, the process is the same: a free assessment, a fixed quote, and installation that's done in a morning. Call Luis at the number above or fill out the form — he'll come out, measure your stairs, and tell you exactly what fits.
