Straight

Straight Rail on 1920s Oak Treads — Cragmere Park Colonial

Cragmere Park, NJ Installed March 2026

Cragmere Park colonials from the 1920s have some of the best original oak staircases in Bergen County — dark-stained treads, square balusters, and a solid handrail. The Morrisons needed a straight lift for the main staircase: 14 oak treads with the cream seat parked at the bottom near the front hall. The rail bolted directly into the treads with no wall drilling, and the seat tucks neatly against the banister when folded.

Curved Rail Around a Half-Wall — Rio Vista Townhome

Rio Vista, NJ Installed February 2026

This Rio Vista townhome has a modern, upscale staircase with a half-wall at the upper landing — the stairs make a 90-degree turn before reaching the second floor. The Changs needed the brown seat parked at the top so Mr. Chang could ride down first thing in the morning. Luis laser-measured the curve: 16 risers, brown upholstery to match the carpet tones.

Straight

Compact Straight Rail on Stone Treads — Masonicus Cottage

Masonicus, NJ Installed January 2026

This older Masonicus cottage has a compact staircase with stone-tile treads — common in the smaller mid-century builds on the neighborhood's quarter-acre lots. The stairs run between a wooden sideboard on one side and a wall on the other, leaving about 31 inches of width. Luis used the slim-rail system with a fold-up brown seat.

Outdoor

Outdoor Lift on Stone Porch Steps — Fardale Split-Level

Fardale, NJ Installed November 2025

The Hendersons' 1970 split-level in Fardale has an exterior basement entry — five rough-cut stone steps leading from the driveway down to the laundry room door. Mr. Henderson does the laundry and the steps were getting dangerous in wet weather. Luis installed the outdoor stairlift with a galvanized rail and IP55 weather sealing.

Straight

Straight Rail on Carpeted Stairs — West Mahwah Colonial

West Mahwah, NJ Installed May 2026

The Bennetts live in a 1980s expanded colonial in West Mahwah near the Route 17 corridor. The main staircase is fully carpeted — beige berber — with a tiled floor at the base. Luis matched the brown seat upholstery to the carpet tone so the lift blends in. The rail uses taller brackets to clear the carpet pile without compressing it, which keeps the carpet from developing grooves over time.

Platform Lift

Indoor Wheelchair Platform — Ackermans Mills Home

Ackermans Mills, NJ Installed April 2026

The Riveras' home in south Mahwah's Ackermans Mills, off Wyckoff Avenue, has a straight indoor staircase down to a finished basement family room. Their son uses a manual wheelchair and the stairs made the basement inaccessible. Luis installed an inclined platform lift — a flat black deck with yellow safety edges and a white handrail.

Common Questions

Everything Mahwah Homeowners Actually Ask

Straight answers about cost, installation, and funding — no sales fluff. Browse by topic or call us if you have a question that isn't here.

What does a stairlift cost in Mahwah?

A straight stairlift in Mahwah starts at $2,800 installed. Curved units start at $9,000 because the rail is custom-bent to your staircase after a laser measurement. Outdoor stairlifts start at $4,000 — these are weather-sealed for New Jersey winters. Heavy-duty models that carry up to 600 lb start at $5,050. Financing runs from $79/month. The exact price depends on rail length, the number of turns, and whether you need a folding rail at the bottom for doorway clearance.

Why do curved stairlifts cost more in older Mahwah homes?

Homes in Cragmere Park and the Darlington area often have staircases built between 1900 and 1930 — the turns are not standard angles. A curved rail is laser-measured on site and manufactured to match your exact stair geometry. There is no off-the-shelf curved rail. The measurement alone takes about an hour, and then the rail is bent and shipped. Two-person installation typically takes four to five hours on a curved job vs. three hours for a straight rail.

Is there a cheaper option than a full curved stairlift in Mahwah?

If your staircase has a single 90-degree landing turn — common in 1970s colonials around Fardale — a straight rail with a hinge at the landing can sometimes work instead of a full curved rail. This drops the price from $9,000 to roughly $5,500–$6,000. The assessment tells you whether your landing geometry allows it. If the turn is a true curve rather than a flat landing, you need the curved rail.

What does the $2,800 straight stairlift price include in Mahwah?

The $2,800 includes the rail, the seat with safety belt, the DC motor with battery backup, two remote controls, the folding footrest, and installation by Luis and his team. It also includes a demonstration once the unit is in — we run through all the controls with you and any family members who will use it. The warranty is five years on the motor and gear, lifetime on the rail.

A word from Luis

Mahwah has some of the oldest and most varied housing stock in northern Bergen County. I've put curved rails into Cragmere Park colonials from the 1920s where the staircase makes a tight 90-degree turn at the landing — those homes have real oak treads, beautiful but unforgiving if your knees are going. Then you've got the split-levels built in the 1960s and 70s across Fardale and Masonicus, where the stairs are straight but the landing is narrow and the rail usually needs to hug the wall tight. Outdoor installs are common here too — a lot of those split-levels have exterior basement entries with four or five stone steps. We use the weather-sealed units rated for New Jersey winters, because a nor'easter will bury those steps in snow and the lift has to work when the power's out. The battery backup runs it for about six hours, which covers most outages around here.

What I tell families in Mahwah is this: the assessment takes an hour. I measure the stairs, we talk about which side the rail goes on, and I show you exactly where it bolts — into the treads, not the wall. For the Darlington-area homes with wider staircases, we sometimes do a double rail if a caregiver walks alongside. For the tighter Rio Vista townhomes, we go with the fold-up seat that gives you back the stair width when nobody's using it. Most installs finish in three to four hours. The rail comes pre-built for straight stairs. Curved ones get laser-measured on site and the rail is bent to match — takes about two weeks from measurement to install.

— Luis Ramírez, Mahwah
Your Next Step

Ready to get started? It's simple.

Mahwah sits at the northern edge of Bergen County, where the Ramapo Mountains meet the New York state line. The housing here spans more than a century — from the Havemeyer-era mansions near the Ramapo College campus to the split-levels that went up during the 1960s suburban expansion. That variety means no two stairlift installs look the same. A curved rail in a Cragmere Park colonial takes different measurements than a straight unit in a Fardale bi-level, and we carry both.

If your mother or father lives in Mahwah and the stairs are becoming a daily worry, the first step is an in-home assessment. Luis comes out, measures the staircase, checks the tread material and landing space, and gives you a firm number. No pressure, no sales pitch — just a measurement and a quote. Call or fill out the form on this page to schedule it.
