Stairlift Service Across Howard County

Howard County, MD

From Historic Ellicott City on Main Street — the granite and rubble-stone buildings dating to 1772, where interior stairs are steep, narrow, and cut into hillside topography that drops 150 feet from the courthouse to the Patapsco — to the split-foyer colonials of Normandy Heights and Ilchester built in the late 1960s and 1970s along Route 103, our team has mapped every staircase type in this community.

1974 Normandy Heights split-foyer — straight rail on dark hardwood treads

Normandy Heights, MD Installed February 2026

A 1974 split-foyer colonial off Route 103 with dark oak open-tread stairs — the most common staircase layout in Ellicott City. Mr. Kessler needed the upper flight covered after a knee replacement. We bolted a standard straight rail directly into the hardwood treads, running along the right side of the staircase. The seat sits at the bottom landing in warm indoor light, folding footrest keeping the stairs clear for the grandchildren. He was upstairs that evening for the first time in six weeks.

Historic Main Street rowhouse — curved rail bending at the upper landing

Historic Ellicott City, MD Installed March 2026

An 1840s cut-granite rowhouse on lower Main Street. The staircase has a 90-degree curve at the upper landing where the hallway meets the second floor, with a half-wall balustrade and framed art along the stairway. Mrs. Dougherty's daughter called after her mother stopped going upstairs following a hip replacement. We laser-scanned the curve, fabricated the rail to bend precisely around the upper landing turn, and parked the seat at the top floor. She rode upstairs for the first time in nine weeks on install day.

Montgomery Meadows colonial — straight rail in a compact traditional stairway

Montgomery Meadows, MD Installed January 2026

A 1982 center-hall colonial in Montgomery Meadows with a compact, traditional staircase — stone-look tile treads, a wooden sideboard and potted plant at the base, and a cozy cottage feel typical of the neighborhood's older homes. Mrs. Park's mother had moved in and couldn't manage the stairs. We installed a straight rail in the tight space next to the hallway furniture, with the seat folding flush so the narrow passage stays clear. The compact profile was key — no wall modifications needed in this smaller footprint home.

Outdoor

Route 40 raised entry — outdoor lift on stone-paved porch steps

Ellicott City Proper, MD Installed November 2025

A brick colonial along Route 40 with a raised front porch entry — rough natural stone paving at the base, concrete steps up to the front door, and a covered porch overhead. Mrs. Chen had been using the garage side entrance for two years to avoid the front steps. We mounted the outdoor rail with the weather-sealed cream seat and enclosed motor housing rated for Maryland's summer humidity, anchored into the stone paving with marine-grade hardware. The 72-hour battery pack handles the neighborhood's storm outages.

1990s Centennial colonial — straight rail on carpeted stairs with landing

Centennial, MD Installed December 2025

A 1994 center-hall colonial in the Centennial neighborhood with wall-to-wall carpeted stairs and a small landing area. Mr. Okonkwo was scheduled for hip replacement at Howard County General and wanted the lift running before he came home. The brown-upholstered seat blends with the carpet tones on the treads, and the rail bolts through the carpet into the subfloor beneath. The wide carpeted landing at the top gives plenty of room for the swivel-exit dismount. He rode it home from surgery eight days after install.

Platform Lift

Dunloggin ranch — indoor wheelchair platform lift for basement-to-main access

Dunloggin, MD Installed October 2025

A 1980s ranch-style home in Dunloggin where the finished basement is the primary living space and the main-floor bedrooms are up a full flight. Mr. Williams uses a wheelchair after bilateral knee replacement and cannot transfer to a seated stairlift. We installed an inclined wheelchair platform lift with a flat anti-slip surface, yellow high-visibility safety edges, and a white handrail along the indoor stairway. The platform carries the wheelchair directly — no transfers, no standing required. His physical therapist approved the setup on the first ride.

Common Questions

Everything Ellicott City Homeowners Actually Ask

Straight answers about cost, installation, and funding — no sales fluff. Browse by topic or call us if you have a question that isn't here.

What does a stairlift cost in Ellicott City right now?

Straight rails in standard Ellicott City homes — the split-foyer colonials in Normandy Heights, the center-hall colonials in Montgomery Meadows, the 1990s two-stories in Centennial — run $2,800 to $5,500 installed. Curved rails, which you'll need for most historic Main Street properties, split-level half-flight entries, and any staircase with a mid-landing turn, run $9,000 to $15,000 because the rail is manufactured to your exact staircase geometry. Outdoor lifts for raised front entries along Route 40 and rebuilt flood-zone porches run $4,000 to $7,500.

Are prices different in Historic Ellicott City than in the newer subdivisions?

Equipment prices are identical — we don't charge more for a Main Street address than for a Centennial cul-de-sac. What varies slightly is install labor for unusual conditions: curved rail fabrication for 19th-century granite rowhouse staircases with irregular tread depths, Historic District Commission review for any exterior modification on a contributing structure, and flood-hardened mounting for properties rebuilt after the 2016 or 2018 events.

My home was rebuilt after the 2016 or 2018 flood — does that affect installation?

It actually makes things easier for interior installs. Flood-rebuilt homes have new code-compliant framing behind the walls, level treads, and modern wiring — which means the rail bolts in cleaner and the dedicated outlet is already where it needs to be. For exterior lifts on rebuilt porches, we verify the new foundation drainage and anchor into the replacement concrete rather than the original stone. We've installed in half a dozen flood-rebuilt properties on or near Main Street.

Do you charge extra for weekend or evening consultations?

No. A significant share of our Ellicott City calls come from adult children in D.C. or Baltimore who can only visit their parents on weekends. Saturday assessments are scheduled at no additional charge. If you leave a message on Saturday, someone calls you back Saturday.

A word from Luis

Ellicott City families usually call me after a scare on one of two staircases — the steep, narrow run inside a granite-walled rowhouse on lower Main Street, or the carpeted colonial staircase in a 1970s Normandy Heights split-foyer that was fine when the kids were young and isn't anymore.

My job is simple: drive to your house within 24 hours, measure once, and give you a written price honored for 30 days. No upsells. No pressure. If you qualify for Community First Choice or HISA through the Baltimore VA, I walk you through the paperwork at the kitchen table.
