Our Coverage Area

Stairlift Service Across Howard County

Howard County, MD

From the original 1967 Wilde Lake split-levels — where the conversation is almost always about steep, narrow stairs with worn carpet and a single handrail — to the Kings Contrivance townhomes and bi-levels where village association HOA approval is required before any interior modification, our team has mapped every village in Columbia. We know which Owen Brown and Long Reach floor plans have the mid-landing turn that requires a curved rail, which Harper’s Choice condos have the tight stairwell that only fits a slim-profile seat, and which Hickory Ridge and Dorsey’s Search colonials have the wide formal staircase that installs in under three hours. Because Howard County borders Anne Arundel, Baltimore County, and Montgomery County, we also staff dedicated coverage for Ellicott City, Laurel, Savage, and the Route 29 corridor.

Wilde Lake colonial — straight rail on original oak treads from 1969

Wilde Lake, MD Installed March 2026

A 1969 colonial in Wilde Lake — one of Columbia’s original village homes, built the year after James Rouse opened the first model units. The oak treads had been refinished twice but were still solid, and Mrs. Delgado was clear: no carpet runner, no wall anchors, nothing that changes the look of the staircase her late husband built the bookshelf around. Luis bolted a straight rail directly into the dark hardwood treads, color-matched the rail finish to the honey-tone oak, and mounted the beige seat so it parks flush at the bottom landing behind the bookshelf. Three and a half hours from first drill to final walkthrough.

Kings Contrivance bi-level — curved rail with 90-degree upper landing turn

Kings Contrivance, MD Installed February 2026

A 1978 bi-level in Kings Contrivance with the floor plan Columbia builders loved in the late seventies: six steps up from the front door to the kitchen level, a 90-degree turn at the landing, then seven more steps to the bedrooms. Mr. Park had a stroke in December and the rehab team at Howard County General told the family he would not be safe on stairs without assistance. Luis laser-scanned the staircase, fabricated a curved rail that carries him from the foyer around the bend to the bedroom hallway in one continuous ride, and added a swivel-exit seat at the top so he steps off onto level floor. The brown-upholstered seat parks at the upper landing near the framed art on the wall.

Straight

Owen Brown townhome — straight rail on stone-tile entry stairs

Owen Brown, MD Installed January 2026

A 1974 townhome in Owen Brown with stone-tile treads from the ground-level entry up to the main living floor. Mrs. Nguyen’s mother had moved in after a hip fracture, and the compact traditional staircase next to a wooden sideboard with a potted plant was the single biggest fall risk in the house. Luis used masonry anchors rated for ceramic tile, mounted a straight rail with the brown-upholstered seat parking at the bottom landing beside the sideboard. The cozy cottage feel of the entryway barely changed. Mrs. Nguyen’s mother rides it six times a day between the laundry room and the kitchen.

Hickory Ridge front porch — weather-sealed outdoor lift on stone paving

Hickory Ridge, MD Installed December 2025

A 1980 colonial in Hickory Ridge with a raised front porch, eight exterior stone-paving steps, and a mature maple canopy that drops leaves and moisture onto the entry year-round. Mr. Washington is a retired Army sergeant who served at Fort Meade for 22 years — he qualified for a full HISA grant through the Baltimore VA Medical Center, which covered the entire install cost. Luis prefilled VA Form 10-0103, the prescription came from his VA provider in three weeks, and payment was authorized the week after. The cream-colored seat locks at the porch landing on the rough natural stone paving, weather-sealed against Maryland humidity.

Long Reach split-level — straight rail on carpeted stairs, same-day install

Long Reach, MD Installed November 2025

A 1975 split-level in Long Reach with wall-to-wall carpet over plywood treads, a single handrail on the left, and a half-flight from the family room to the bedroom level that Mrs. Fitzgerald had been avoiding since her second knee replacement. Her occupational therapist at Howard County General flagged the stairs as a fall risk during the discharge assessment. Luis used extended-length anchors to reach the plywood substrate through the thick carpet — standard hardware would have pulled loose in six months. The brown-upholstered seat matches the carpet tones and parks at the landing where the tiled floor meets the first carpeted step. CFC covered the full cost after Supports Planner approval.

Platform Lift

Harper’s Choice condo — indoor wheelchair platform lift with yellow safety edges

Harper's Choice, MD Installed October 2025

A ground-floor condo in Harper’s Choice with a three-step interior level change between the living area and the sunken den. Mr. Okafor uses a power wheelchair after a spinal cord injury and needed a platform that could handle the chair’s weight plus his own. Luis installed an indoor inclined wheelchair platform lift with a flat black anti-slip surface and yellow high-visibility safety edges on all four sides, automatic gate locks at both levels, and a white handrail along the track. The platform runs on standard 120V household current with battery backup. The Harper’s Choice Village Board processed the ADA accommodation request in five business days.

Common Questions

Everything Columbia Homeowners Actually Ask

Straight answers about cost, installation, and funding — no sales fluff. Browse by topic or call us if you have a question that isn't here.

What does a stairlift cost in Columbia and Howard County right now?

Straight rails in standard Columbia village homes — the Wilde Lake colonials, the Long Reach split-levels, the Owen Brown townhomes — run $2,800 to $5,500 installed. Curved rails, which you’ll need for most 1970s bi-levels in Kings Contrivance, Owen Brown, and Long Reach where there’s a 90-degree landing turn, run $9,000 to $15,000 because the rail is manufactured to your exact staircase geometry. Outdoor weather-sealed models for raised front porches in Hickory Ridge and Dorsey’s Search run $4,000 to $7,500. Every quote is written, honored for 30 days, and includes installation, rail, seat, battery backup, and the first service visit.

Does the price change depending on which Columbia village I live in?

Equipment prices are the same whether you live in Wilde Lake or River Hill. What varies slightly is install labor for unusual conditions: masonry anchors for stone-tile treads in Owen Brown townhomes, extended-length anchors for thick carpet in Long Reach split-levels, or village association accommodation paperwork that we handle at no charge. We tell you the line items upfront — no surprise add-ons.

Howard County is expensive — are your prices higher than the rest of Maryland?

No. We quote the same equipment at the same price across the state. Howard County’s median household income is among the highest in the country, but that does not mean families should overpay for accessibility equipment. Our straight-rail installed price of $2,800 to $5,500 is identical in Columbia, Baltimore, Annapolis, or Frederick. The only variable is labor for unusual stair conditions, and we show you that line before you sign.

Do you charge for the village association HOA paperwork?

No. Columbia’s ten villages each have their own community association, and most townhome and condo installs require a written accommodation request before work begins. We prepare and file the village board letter at no charge — Kings Contrivance, Owen Brown, Harper’s Choice, Long Reach, and the others. Under Maryland Code Real Property 11-111 and the federal Fair Housing Act, associations must grant reasonable accommodations for residents with documented disabilities. We supply the medical-necessity template along with the request.

A word from Luis

Columbia families usually call after one of two things happens: a parent slips on the carpeted stairs in a Kings Contrivance townhouse after a knee replacement, or an adult child in D.C. realizes their mother in a Wilde Lake split-level hasn’t been upstairs in three weeks.

I drive to your house within 24 hours, measure the staircase, and hand you a written quote honored for 30 days. No upsells. No pressure. If you qualify for CFC or HISA funding, I walk you through the paperwork at the kitchen table. En español si lo prefiere.
