Into the stair treads, almost always. Modern stairlifts are self-supporting and the rail fastens directly to the wood or concrete of the steps. This means we do NOT touch your wall, your banister, your paint, or your baseboards — and when you eventually remove the lift, you just fill a handful of small holes in the treads. Wall-mounted lifts are a 1990s design we don’t use.
