Straight Stairlift — Bellingham, WA

Straight Stairlift

Whatcom County Bestseller

The standard for Bellingham's craftsman foursquares, Sehome cottages, and Columbia ramblers. Over 65% of the stairlifts we install across the Bellingham metro are straight rails. The rail bolts to your stair treads — never into the wall — the seat and footrest fold flat, and the battery backup keeps you moving through the winter windstorm outages that knock out Whatcom County power two or three times a season. Most straight installs complete in three to four hours.

Starting at $3,200 installed

What's Included

  • Battery backup for power outages
  • Swivel seat with safety lock
  • Two wireless remote controls
  • Soft start and soft stop motion
  • Fold-up seat, arms, and footrest
  • 10-year motor & gearbox warranty

Compared to Alternatives

vs Curved: 3x less expensive and installed in one visit. vs Home elevator: 10-15x less cost and no construction. vs Moving bedroom downstairs: Keeps your home exactly as it is.

Stairlift Service Across Whatcom County

Whatcom County, WA

From the hand-milled craftsman foursquares of the Lettered Streets — where the conversation is almost always about preserving century-old Douglas fir treads and threading a rail past original Scandinavian millwork — to the bay-view Victorians of South Hill and the large-lot estates of Edgemoor, our team has mapped every neighborhood in Bellingham. We know which Sehome cottages have the irregular flagstone entries that need bracket shimming, which Columbia ramblers have the deep-pile carpet and split-entry landing that requires a curved rail, and which Fairhaven homes near the waterfront need marine-grade hardware from day one.

1908 Lettered Streets foursquare — straight rail over original fir treads

Lettered Streets, WA Installed March 2026

A 1908 American Foursquare in the Lettered Streets neighborhood with original Douglas fir treads and a quarter-sawn oak banister hand-milled by Scandinavian carpenters. Mrs. Lindgren is 81 and has lived in the house since 1971. We bolted a slim-profile straight rail into the fir treads without touching the oak banister, the plaster walls, or the original newel post. The rail parks flush at the top landing so the upstairs hallway stays clear. Her neighbor couldn't see the stairlift from the front door until Mrs. Lindgren pointed it out.

1924 South Hill Victorian — curved rail with upper-landing exit past original millwork

South Hill, WA Installed February 2026

A 1924 Victorian on South Hill with bay views, a sweeping L-shaped staircase, and original fir millwork maintained for three decades. Mr. Kovach had a total hip replacement at PeaceHealth St. Joseph Medical Center and his surgeon told him to avoid stairs for six weeks. The staircase turns 90 degrees at the upper landing before opening onto the bedroom hallway. We laser-scanned the full run, fabricated a curved rail that threads past the original newel post and spindles without contacting any millwork, and installed a swivel-exit seat at the top so he steps off onto the hallway runner.

Sehome cottage — straight rail over flagstone entry steps

Sehome, WA Installed January 2026

A 1952 cottage-style home in the Sehome neighborhood with flagstone steps leading from the covered entry porch up to the main living level. Mr. Nguyen is a retired Western Washington University professor with Parkinson's disease. The flagstone treads are irregularly surfaced — each one a slightly different height and depth. We mapped the surface variation with a laser level, drilled anchors into the stone substrate with expansion bolts, and shimmed each bracket so the rail runs dead-level despite the uneven treads. The chair folds flat against the cottage wall so the entry doesn't feel clinical.

Edgemoor — marine-grade outdoor rail over front entry stone paving

Edgemoor, WA Installed December 2025

A raised-entry home in Edgemoor with seven exterior stone-paver steps from the driveway to the covered front porch and views of Bellingham Bay. Mr. Olsen is an 82-year-old Navy veteran who served at Whidbey Island Naval Air Station and qualified for the VA HISA grant through the Mount Vernon VA CBOC at 307 South 13th Street. We prefilled VA Form 10-0103, his provider wrote the prescription within three weeks, and the grant covered the full outdoor install. The rail has marine-grade coating and stainless steel hardware rated for the salt air that drifts up from the bay.

Columbia neighborhood — straight rail on carpeted stairs in a 1960s rambler

Columbia, WA Installed November 2025

A 1964 split-entry rambler in the Columbia neighborhood with thick loop carpet on a straight twelve-step run from the entry level to the bedrooms. Mrs. Sorensen had been sleeping in the downstairs den for two months after a fall on the carpeted stairs. Her son drove up from Seattle on a Saturday to meet us. We compressed the carpet pile under each bracket mount and shimmed to level so the rail sits perfectly true despite the plush surface. The seat folds up flush and the footrest tucks flat so her son walks past it on the left side when he visits. She was back in her own bedroom that evening.

Platform Lift

Fairhaven home — indoor wheelchair platform lift with yellow safety edges

Fairhaven, WA Installed October 2025

A 1990s home near Fairhaven Village where Mr. Brennan, a 68-year-old Army veteran and full-time wheelchair user, needed vertical access between the garage-level entry and the main living floor — a half-flight of six steps that a seated stairlift cannot serve. We installed an enclosed indoor wheelchair platform lift with bright yellow safety edges on the platform perimeter, automatic folding ramp at both levels, and key-lock controls. The platform is rated to 750 lbs and fits his power chair with clearance on all sides. His VA HISA grant through the Mount Vernon CBOC covered the majority of the cost.

Common Questions

Everything Bellingham Homeowners Actually Ask

Straight answers about cost, installation, and funding — no sales fluff. Browse by topic or call us if you have a question that isn't here.

What does a stairlift cost in Bellingham right now?

Straight rails in standard Bellingham homes — the craftsman foursquares in the Lettered Streets, the ramblers in Columbia, the cottages in Sehome — run $2,800 to $5,500 installed. Curved rails, which you'll need for L-shaped staircases in South Hill Victorians, split-entry ramblers, and pre-1920 homes with basement stair curves, run $9,000 to $15,000 because the rail is manufactured to your exact staircase geometry. Outdoor models for raised front entries in Edgemoor and stone porches across South Hill run $4,000 to $7,500. Every quote is written, honored for 30 days, and includes installation, rail, seat, battery backup, and the first service visit.

Are prices higher in Edgemoor or South Hill than other Bellingham neighborhoods?

Equipment prices are identical across every Bellingham zip code. We don't inflate quotes based on your neighborhood or bay-view address. What can vary slightly is install labor for unusual conditions: flagstone tread shimming in Sehome cottages, historic millwork clearance in Lettered Streets foursquares, or pulling a dedicated circuit in a pre-1920 home still running knob-and-tube. We itemize every line on the written quote. No surprise premiums.

Does the marine-grade outdoor coating cost extra?

No. Marine-grade rail coating is standard on every Washington outdoor install — not a $400 add-on like the national chains price it. Bellingham sits on the bay with salt air, winter rain, and freeze-thaw cycles that destroy standard zinc-plated hardware within two seasons. Our outdoor installs come with stainless steel fasteners, sealed motor housings, and cold-weather battery spec rated for Whatcom County winters. The 12-month corrosion follow-up call is built into the service plan at no extra charge.

Is there a price difference between a new stairlift and a reconditioned unit in Bellingham?

Reconditioned straight rails start around $2,000 — roughly 30% less than new. We carry factory-reconditioned units with new upholstery, tested motors, and fresh batteries. The rail is always new because every staircase is different. Curved rails cannot be reconditioned because they are manufactured to one specific staircase geometry. If you are comparing quotes, ask whether the price includes installation, the battery backup, and the first service visit — some Whatcom County competitors quote the equipment only and add labor separately.

A word from Luis

Most Bellingham families call me after a close call on a steep set of craftsman stairs — a slip on rain-dampened shoes in a Lettered Streets foursquare, a parent who stopped going upstairs in their South Hill Victorian three months ago, a retired teacher in Sehome whose knees can no longer handle the thirteen-step run to the bedrooms she's climbed since 1988.

My job is simple: drive to your house within 24 hours, measure once, and give you a written price that's honored for 30 days. No pressure. No upsells. En español si lo prefiere.
