Atlantic Beach is a barrier-island community, the second largest of the Jacksonville Beaches, bounded by the Atlantic Ocean to the east and the Intracoastal Waterway to the west near Mayport Naval Station. It sits essentially at sea level, so more than 70% of its total area is water.

Atlantic Beach's older beach cottages and duplexes, many held by the same families for decades, have staircases from before anyone planned to age in place, and a quarter of residents are 65 or older. We spec marine-grade hardware on every straight rail, since salt air off the Atlantic wears out anything less; ask us out and we'll fit it to your original woodwork, not bolt over it.

What makes Atlantic Beach different
Why a stairlift installed in Atlantic Beach, FL is planned around the way this specific community lives, not stamped out from a one-size-fits-all template.
Atlantic Beach was incorporated in 1926 with its first charter adopted in 1929, and its town hall was rebuilt in 1932 after a fire, marking an established beach town rather than a modern subdivision. Its roughly 6,537 housing units are moderately dense (about 3,671 per square mile), with 29% single-person households.
Source ↗Atlantic Beach is an affluent coastal community with a median household income around $92,000 and per capita income of about $64,000. Its median age of 47.9 and 24.1% of residents aged 65 or older reflect a substantial established retiree population.

We live in a 1960s concrete-block two-story in Selva Marina that my parents bought when Mayport was still a small fishing base. The stairs are poured concrete and two other companies said they could not anchor into them. All American drilled the concrete anchors, installed the rail, and my mother rides it every morning and evening. Rock solid after six months.
I retired from the Navy at Mayport after 24 years and my back is shot. The Jacksonville VA clinic on Jefferson Street wrote the HISA prescription and All American prefilled every form. The grant covered $6,800 and I was riding the lift five weeks after my first call. No runaround, no paperwork headaches.
Our beach house on Ocean Boulevard has a staircase with an L-turn at the upper landing. Two companies wanted to install two separate lifts. All American scanned the whole run and fabricated one curved rail. My husband rides from the entry to the master bedroom without stopping. It has been four months with zero issues and the salt air has not touched the finish.
My father speaks only Spanish and I was worried about communication. Luis came out, conducted the entire visit in Spanish, and walked Papa through every button twice. The Spanish manual is taped next to the controls beside the sideboard. Papa calls it his elevator and uses it six times a day from the cottage downstairs.
Mom needed the lift before the holidays and I live in Orlando. I called Monday, they measured Tuesday morning, and installed Thursday. The outdoor lift handles the flagstone stilt-home entry, ten steps she had not climbed in two months. She was on her own deck watching the sunrise Friday morning for the first time since September.
I use a power wheelchair full-time and a regular stairlift was not going to work. All American installed an inclined platform along the indoor stairway with yellow safety edges so I can see exactly where to roll on. The platform carries 600 lb, chair and rider. SMMC-LTC and HISA together covered the full cost.

Stairlift Service Across Duval County
From the 1950s beach cottages along Seminole Road and Sherry Drive in the original Atlantic Beach grid, to the elevated stilt homes lining Ocean Boulevard and Beach Avenue where salt spray reaches the porch, our crew has measured staircases citywide. Selva Marina south of Mayport Road features 1960s concrete-block two-stories with poured-concrete treads. Selva Tierra and Selva Linkside hold wider 1980s builds with oak treads. Elevated oceanfront homes on 1st Street through 20th Street need outdoor lifts for entry stairs that rise 8-12 feet above flood level. The Mayport fishing village anchors the north end with 1940s wood-frame Navy cottages.

Everything Atlantic Beach Homeowners Actually Ask
Straight answers about cost, installation, and funding, no sales fluff. Browse by topic or call us if you have a question that isn't here.
How much does a stairlift typically cost for a home in Atlantic Beach, FL?
Cost comes down mainly to staircase type and equipment grade rather than anything specific to Atlantic Beach's zip code. A straight-rail lift for one of the area's classic single-story-over-garage beach cottages is the simplest and least expensive install; anything with a landing, a turn, or a spiral stair, more common in the older two-story homes near the historic town core, needs a custom-curved rail, which costs more because the rail itself is built to that staircase.
Does living on a barrier island add to stairlift costs?
Not directly, but it does affect equipment choice. Given how close every home in Atlantic Beach is to the Atlantic Ocean and the Intracoastal, we generally recommend marine-grade hardware and corrosion-resistant rail finishes, which cost a bit more upfront than standard components but avoid the premature wear that salt-air humidity causes over a few years.
Is a stairlift a reasonable investment for the price point of homes in Atlantic Beach?
With a median household income near $92,000 and a well-established retiree population (24.1% of residents are 65 or older), a stairlift is a common and cost-effective alternative to selling the house or taking on a full accessibility renovation, especially in a town where original mid-century construction can make elevator retrofits impractical.
How long does a stairlift installation take in an Atlantic Beach home?
Most straight-rail installs are a few hours to a single day. Homes near the historic core that date closer to Atlantic Beach's 1926 incorporation sometimes take a bit longer because original stair stringers and trim need careful measuring before the rail is fabricated.
Will the installation damage original woodwork in an older beach cottage?
No. The rail mounts to the stair treads themselves, not the wall or the historic trim, which matters in a town where so much of the housing stock predates modern building codes. We walk every job site first specifically to plan around original woodwork rather than over it.
Does the barrier-island location affect permitting or installation requirements?
Atlantic Beach sits essentially at sea level as part of the Jacksonville Beaches, but a stairlift is an interior fixture, not a structural or flood-zone modification, so it doesn't trigger the kind of review that exterior work near the Intracoastal or the ocean would. We handle any Duval County permitting on your behalf.
Does Florida Medicaid cover a stairlift for someone in Duval County?
Possibly, through the Statewide Medicaid Managed Care Long-Term Care (SMMC LTC) Home Accessibility Adaptation benefit. There's no fixed dollar cap in the policy language; coverage is set case-by-case by your managed care organization as part of an individualized care plan, so approval depends on documented need rather than a set amount.
Is there a regional aging-services program that helps with home modifications here?
Yes. ElderSource is the Area Agency on Aging for Planning and Service Area 4, which covers Duval along with Baker, Clay, Flagler, Nassau, St. Johns, and Volusia counties. Their program list includes minor home repair and home modifications, though stairlifts aren't named as a specific line item on their public materials, so it's worth calling their intake line directly to ask what a home-modification referral can cover.
Atlantic Beach is right next to Mayport Naval Station, can a veteran use a VA grant for a stairlift?
Not through the HISA grant specifically. The VA's Home Improvements and Structural Alterations program explicitly excludes stair lifts and porch or platform lifts. That holds for both tiers: the $6,800 service-connected lifetime benefit and the $2,000 non-service-connected version, neither one covers a stairlift. Veterans in Atlantic Beach need to go through the VA Prosthetics/PSAS office or a SAH/SHA grant instead, which are the correct channels for stairlift funding.

I've put lifts in Atlantic Beach homes just blocks from where the town hall was rebuilt back in 1932, and the salt air off the Atlantic changes what I recommend: a straight rail with marine-grade hardware holds up to that humidity a lot better than a bargain unit ever will. This isn't a retirement community that sprang up last year; people here have been in the same 1920s-to-1960s beach houses for thirty or forty years, and they want equipment that respects the house's original woodwork, not a track bolted on top of it. With median household income here running close to $92,000, most of my Atlantic Beach clients aren't looking to cut corners. They want the quieter motor and the better seat, and we spec that from the first visit.
