Stairlift Service Across Douglas County

Douglas County, MN

From the Silk Stocking Historic District on Cedar and Douglas Streets — where 50+ NRHP-listed late-Victorian and early-1900s homes have steep narrow stairwells with original fir treads that need slim-profile rails and careful bracket shimming — to the 1950s ramblers and Cape Cods near Lake Agnes and Lake Henry where settling foundations and tight half-landings dominate. We work the newer two-story lake homes along Lake Carlos and Lake Le Homme Dieu where curved rails are common, the split-levels in Feltanderson with mid-landing turns, and the older homes along Broadway with L-shaped stairs. We also serve Carlos, Garfield, Osakis, Brandon, Evansville, and Glenwood across Douglas and Pope counties.

Lake Agnes rambler — straight rail on original oak treads with foundation shimming

Lake Agnes, MN Installed March 2026

A 1954 rambler near Lake Agnes with original dark oak treads and a straight 14-foot run from the front hallway to the upper level. The cream-upholstered seat parks at the bottom landing, folded flat against the newel post. The house had settled over seventy winters and two of the treads had a slight bow — Luis shimmed the rail brackets to compensate so the chair rides perfectly level. The rail bolts into the oak treads only. The hardwood finish stays intact and the warm hallway lighting frames the install.

Lake Carlos two-story — curved rail with 90-degree turn at the upper landing

Lake Carlos, MN Installed February 2026

A 1998 upscale two-story lake home on Lake Carlos with a 90-degree turn at the upper landing and a chandelier over the foyer. Sgt. First Class Olson served twenty years in the Army; his care runs through the Max J. Beilke VA Clinic on 22nd Avenue. Luis laser-scanned the staircase, fabricated a curved rail that bends around the upper-floor half-wall, and installed a brown-upholstered swivel-exit seat that parks at the top floor. His HISA grant covered $6,800. Polished hardwood floor at the upper landing, neutral walls behind.

Silk Stocking District cottage — compact rail beside a sideboard on tile-stone treads

Silk Stocking Historic District, MN Installed January 2026

A late-1890s NRHP-listed cottage on Cedar Street in the Silk Stocking District with light-colored stone tile at the base of the stairs and a wooden sideboard at the bottom landing that Mrs. Magnuson refused to move. The brown-upholstered seat parks beside the sideboard. Two of the treads had a slight bow from a century of freeze-thaw — Luis shimmed the rail brackets so the chair rides level. The compact 12-foot rail fits the tight cottage stairwell without crowding the entry. Brick wall, traditional decor, the historic interior stays intact.

Lake Le Homme Dieu porch — outdoor rail on flagstone steps, freeze-thaw rated

Lake Le Homme Dieu, MN Installed December 2025

A 2001 lake home on Lake Le Homme Dieu with eight rough flagstone steps from the back door down to the porch and another twelve down to the dock. Mr. Bjornstad slipped on frost in October. Luis installed a weather-sealed outdoor rail with 316-stainless fasteners rated for Minnesota freeze-thaw cycles, a cream-upholstered IP55-motor seat, and UV-stable powder coating that matches the existing deck railing. Outdoor lifts start at $4,000. The battery backup ran the lift through a full-day Xcel outage during the January blizzard.

Broadway colonial — pre-surgery straight rail on wide carpeted stairs

Broadway, MN Installed November 2025

A 1985 colonial near Broadway with wide carpeted treads in warm-brown tones and a tiled foyer at the base. Mrs. Nordstrom's orthopedic surgeon at Alomere Health on 17th Avenue East scheduled a total knee replacement and told her to stay off the stairs unassisted for eight weeks post-op. Luis used extended mounting bolts that penetrate through the thick carpet pad into the subfloor. The brown upholstery matches the carpet tones, the seat parks near the upper landing, and the rail mounts on the wall side of a standard mid-century residential build.

Platform Lift

Feltanderson split-level — indoor inclined wheelchair platform lift, yellow safety edges

Feltanderson, MN Installed October 2025

A 1978 Feltanderson split-level where Mr. Fischer uses a power wheelchair after a stroke. The five-step rise from the garage entry made half the house unreachable. Luis installed an indoor inclined platform lift with a flat black anti-slip deck, bright yellow high-visibility safety edges, white handrails along the indoor stairway, and 600 lb capacity. Mr. Fischer rolls his power chair onto the deck, presses one button, and rides the incline up — no transfer to a seat. The Minnesota Elderly Waiver through Douglas County Social Services covered the entire cost.

Common Questions

Everything Alexandria Homeowners Actually Ask

Straight answers about cost, installation, and funding — no sales fluff. Browse by topic or call us if you have a question that isn't here.

What does a stairlift cost in Alexandria, MN right now?

Straight rails in standard Alexandria homes — the 1950s ramblers near Lake Agnes, the split-levels in Feltanderson, the lake homes along Lake Carlos — run $2,800 to $5,500 installed. Curved rails for Lake Le Homme Dieu two-stories with mid-landing turns and older Broadway homes with L-shaped staircases run $9,000 to $15,000 because the rail is manufactured to your exact staircase geometry. Outdoor models for raised entries and deck-to-dock stairs run $4,000 to $7,500 with freeze-thaw spec included. Every quote is written, honored for 30 days, includes installation, rail, seat, battery backup, and the first service visit.

Are prices different near the lakes versus in town?

Equipment prices are identical across Douglas County — the Silk Stocking Historic District, the Lake Carlos shoreline, Carlos, Garfield, Osakis. What can vary slightly is install labor for unusual conditions: fitting a slim-profile rail into a narrow 1950s rambler staircase, shimming brackets where a sixty-year-old foundation has settled, or running a longer outdoor rail on a steep lake home deck staircase. Every line item is listed on the written quote. No lake-property surcharge.

Can I combine the Elderly Waiver with the VA HISA grant?

They serve different populations and generally do not overlap — the Elderly Waiver is Medicaid-funded and HISA is VA-funded. However, if you are an Alexandria veteran who also qualifies for Minnesota Medicaid, your Douglas County case manager and the Max J. Beilke VA Clinic benefits coordinator can determine which program covers your specific situation most effectively. In some cases the HISA grant at $6,800 covers the equipment and the Elderly Waiver covers ongoing home modifications separately. We coordinate with both programs.

Does insurance ever cover a stairlift in Minnesota?

Traditional Medicare does not cover stairlifts. Minnesota Medicaid through the Elderly Waiver does — see the funding tab. Some Medicare Advantage plans offered through Blue Cross Blue Shield of Minnesota, HealthPartners, and UCare now include home modification benefits. If your parent has a long-term care policy, check for 'home modification' or 'durable medical equipment' coverage. We provide the documentation format most Alexandria insurers require, including the discharge note from Alomere Health on 17th Avenue East when relevant.

A word from Luis

Alexandria is a lake town that doubles as a retirement destination — people work thirty years in the Twin Cities, then move up here for the water and the quiet. The homes around Lake Agnes and along Lake Carlos are beautiful, but they were built for young families, not for aging in place. Two-story lake homes with steep staircases, split-level ramblers with half-landings, seasonal cabins on Lake Le Homme Dieu that become year-round when the kids move away.

I drive to your house within 24 hours, measure once, and give you a written price honored for 30 days. If you qualify for the Minnesota Elderly Waiver or a VA HISA grant through the Max J. Beilke VA Clinic on 22nd Avenue, I bring the paperwork on the first visit.
