Straight Stairlift — Reston, VA

Straight Stairlift

The standard for Reston's colonials, cluster townhomes, and three-level South Lakes layouts.

Over 70% of the stairlifts we install in Reston are straight rails — Hunters Woods colonials, South Lakes townhomes, and Tall Oaks two-stories with the standard 13-to-14-tread runs. The rail bolts to your stair treads (never the wall), the seat and footrest fold flat, and the battery backup keeps you moving through winter ice events and summer storm outages. Every Reston install ships with the freeze-thaw gasket kit standard for Northern Virginia's climate cycling. Most installs wrap in under four hours.

Starting at $3,200 installed

What's Included

  • Battery backup for power outages
  • Swivel seat with safety lock
  • Two wireless remote controls
  • Soft start and soft stop motion
  • Fold-up seat, arms, and footrest
  • 10-year motor & gearbox warranty

Compared to Alternatives

vs Curved: 3x less expensive and installed in one visit. vs Home elevator: 10-15x less cost and no construction. vs Moving bedroom downstairs: Keeps your home exactly as it is.

Dark hardwood stairs in a Hunters Woods colonial — beige seat, original banister preserved

Hunters Woods, VA Installed March 2026

A 1978 Hunters Woods colonial with dark oak treads, turned spindles, and a homeowner who spent 37 years at the State Department and was not about to let anyone damage the woodwork he refinished himself in retirement. We mounted the beige seat on a straight rail bolted into the treads, parked the chair at the bottom landing where it folds flat against the wall, and left the original banister completely untouched. Mr. Whitfield's wife said it's less visible than the coat closet. Their neighbor across the cul-de-sac called us the following week.

90-degree curved rail in a Lake Anne village townhome — brown seat at the upper landing

Lake Anne, VA Installed February 2026

A 1970s Lake Anne village townhome with a staircase that turns 90 degrees at the upper landing — the kind of geometry that was standard in the early village construction but impossible for an off-the-shelf straight rail. Mr. Lindberg retired from the CIA after 30 years and qualified for the HISA grant through the DC VA Medical Center. We digitally scanned the staircase, fabricated a curved rail that threads the turn and deposits the brown-upholstered seat flush at the upper hallway, and mounted a swivel-exit so he steps onto the hallway floor instead of the top tread. The cluster association approved in eight days using our Fair Housing documentation.

Slate-tread stairs in a Tall Oaks cottage — brown seat beside the entry bookcase

Tall Oaks, VA Installed January 2026

A renovated 1975 Tall Oaks home with slate tile treads and a wooden bookcase at the base of the stairs that Mrs. Nakamura has had since her years teaching at the Japanese Language School in Northern Virginia. We mounted the brown-upholstered seat on the compact-profile rail, positioned the lower park so the folded chair clears the bookcase by two inches, and drilled into the slate with masonry anchors. The tile is unmarked. Her daughter in Herndon drove over the following Saturday and said the rail looked like it had been part of the house since the renovation.

Outdoor rail on stone paving at a North Point raised entry

North Point, VA Installed December 2025

The Kaplans' North Point home has a raised front entry with stone paving and five exterior steps that ice over every January. We installed the cream-colored outdoor seat on a hot-dip galvanized rail anchored into the stone, fitted the freeze-thaw gasket kit, and added a weather hood over the joystick. Mr. Kaplan — a retired Army colonel — has ridden it through the entire 2025-2026 winter including the January ice event that shut down half of Northern Virginia. The rail de-iced and started on the first press every morning.

Carpeted stairs in a South Lakes townhome — swivel seat at the landing

South Lakes, VA Installed November 2025

A 1982 South Lakes three-level townhome with 12 carpeted treads on the main-to-bedroom flight and a residential landing at the top. Mrs. Hensley is a retired Fairfax County schoolteacher who has lived in the unit since 1984. We installed the brown-upholstered seat with the swivel-exit feature so the chair rotates 90 degrees at the upper landing, letting her step onto the hallway carpet instead of the top tread. The cluster association approved in five days using our standard Fair Housing documentation packet. She uses it every night and every morning without a single issue.

Platform Lift

Indoor wheelchair platform lift with yellow safety edges in a Hickory Cluster townhome

Hickory Cluster, VA Installed October 2025

Mr. Abrams is a disabled veteran who uses a power wheelchair and needed access between the main floor and the upstairs bedrooms of his Hickory Cluster townhome — one of the original 1965 Charles Goodman designs. The narrow stairwell made a seated stairlift impractical for wheelchair access, so we installed an inclined platform lift with a flat deck and yellow high-visibility safety edges on all sides. The platform folds against the wall when not in use so the stairs stay passable for his wife. The DC VA processed his HISA grant in six weeks. He has been upstairs every night since.

Common Questions

Everything Reston Homeowners Actually Ask

Straight answers about cost, installation, and funding — no sales fluff. Browse by topic or call us if you have a question that isn't here.

What does a stairlift actually cost in Reston right now?

Straight rails in standard Reston homes — Hunters Woods colonials, South Lakes townhomes, North Point two-stories — run $2,800 to $5,500 installed. Curved rails, which you'll need for Hickory Cluster narrow-turn stairwells, Tall Oaks split-level landings, and the upper-landing turns common in 1970s Lake Anne village townhomes, run $9,000 to $15,000 because the rail is manufactured to your exact staircase geometry from a laser scan. Outdoor models with freeze-thaw-rated hardware run $4,000 to $7,500. Every quote is written, honored for 30 days, and includes installation, rail, seat, battery backup, and the first service visit.

Are prices different for cluster townhomes versus single-family colonials?

Equipment and install pricing are identical. What occasionally differs is the rail profile — original 1960s cluster townhomes like Hickory Cluster, Waterview, and some Lake Anne units have narrower stairwells that require the compact-profile rail to preserve passable width. The compact-profile rail costs the same as the standard. What can add time (not cost) is the cluster association approval process. We handle the documentation at no charge.

Do you charge extra for the freeze-thaw hardware on outdoor installs?

No. Every outdoor install in Reston ships with hot-dip galvanized bracket hardware, sealed neoprene washers, freeze-thaw gasket kit, and stainless-steel fasteners as the Northern Virginia default. The DC metro's 50+ annual freeze-thaw cycles crack standard powder-coated hardware within a few winters. Our spec is the baseline — not an upgrade.

Is there a premium for homes that need two stairlifts?

South Lakes three-level townhomes often need a rail on both stair flights. We quote each rail separately and offer a bundled price when both install on the same day. Two straight rails in a three-level townhome typically run $5,200 to $9,800 total installed — less than the cost of a single curved rail. We walk you through the math during the free assessment.

A word from Luis

Reston calls follow a pattern I've seen hundreds of times. The family bought a cluster townhome or a Hunters Woods colonial in the 1970s or 1980s when Robert Simon's planned community was the future of Northern Virginia. The kids grew up, moved out, and the parents stayed because they love the trails, the village centers, the neighbors. Now the stairs are the only thing between them and the house they've lived in for 40 years.

My job is simple: get to your home within 24 hours, measure once, and hand you a written quote honored for 30 days. I carry the Reston Association cluster-HOA accommodation paperwork on every call. No pressure. No upsells.
