Stairlift Service Across Cumberland County

Cumberland County, ME

From the Federal-period rowhouses of the Old Port and Congress Street—where narrow, steep stairs and original plaster walls make every inch of clearance matter—to the Italianate Victorians of the West End, where curved banisters require custom fabrication, our team has mapped every staircase pattern in Portland. We know which Munjoy Hill triple-deckers have the tight 24-inch back staircase requiring the compact rail, which Deering Center colonials have the mid-landing turn that makes straight rails impossible, and which Woodfords Corner postwar Capes have steep attic-conversion stairs. Bayside’s mixed-use buildings often need ADA-compliant platform lifts. Historic district exterior work requires Historic Preservation Commission review—we prepare the application at no charge.

Straight

West End Victorian — straight rail color-matched to the original pine on hardwood treads

West End, ME Installed March 2026

An 1872 Italianate in Portland’s West End with an original pine banister and plaster walls preserved through three generations. Mrs. Callahan’s daughter called from Boston after her mother slipped on the fourth step. Rail color-matched to the original pine, bolted into the hardwood treads without touching a single spindle. The folding seat leaves 27 inches of stair width for the cat to pass — her mother’s primary concern. Installed Tuesday through Friday, riding by the weekend.

Deering Center colonial — curved rail with 90° turn past original oak newel at upper landing

Deering Center, ME Installed February 2026

A 1928 colonial in Deering Center with a 90° turn at the upper landing and an original oak newel post the Bergerons refused to alter. Digitally scanned the staircase during the first visit, fabricated a curved rail that threads past the newel post with one inch of clearance. Chair parks flush at the upper landing and swivels 90° so Mrs. Bergeron steps off onto the hallway floor, not the top tread. Single afternoon installation after 10 days of rail fabrication.

Straight

Munjoy Hill triple-decker — compact straight rail in a 28-inch stairway

Munjoy Hill, ME Installed January 2026

A 1905 triple-decker on Munjoy Hill where the back staircase measures just 28 inches wide — built for longshoremen, not for Mrs. Doiron at 79. Fitted the slimmest rail in our catalog with a folding footrest so the lift tucks flat when parked. Verified that her neighbor on the second floor can still pass when the seat is folded. Three residents, one narrow staircase, zero complaints from anyone. Traditional compact installation completed in three hours.

Outdoor

Bayside raised entry — weather-sealed outdoor lift on ice-covered front porch steps

Bayside, ME Installed December 2025

A raised entry with six concrete porch steps in Bayside — ice-covered from November through March and the reason Mr. Thibodeau hadn’t left his house since Thanksgiving. His son, a Marine veteran, applied for the VA HISA grant through the Portland CBOC. Prefilled the form, the Togus prescription came back in seven weeks. Cream-colored weather-sealed seat mounted on marine-grade stainless rail, motor housing sealed against Portland’s coastal humidity. The -30°F battery has run through two nor’easters without a service call.

Straight

Woodfords Corner Cape — straight rail on carpeted stairs with swivel-exit at top landing

Woodfords Corner, ME Installed November 2025

A 1948 Cape Cod in Woodfords Corner with 13 carpeted treads and a steep attic conversion that added a second floor in the 1970s. Mrs. Pelletier’s biggest worry was stepping off at the top — the landing is barely 30 inches deep. Rail bolted through the carpet into subfloor treads, seat upholstery blending with warm carpet tones. Swivel-exit seat rotates 90° at the upper landing so she stands on the hallway floor instead of the top step. One adjustment, one fall prevented.

Platform Lift

Old Port mixed-use building — indoor wheelchair platform lift for power wheelchair user

Old Port, ME Installed October 2025

Mr. Bouchard uses a power wheelchair and lives on the second floor of a 1920s mixed-use building in the Old Port. The building has no elevator and the landlord had been told it would cost $80,000 to add one. Installed an inclined wheelchair platform lift on the interior staircase with a flat black anti-slip surface and yellow high-visibility safety edges, fold-up deck when not in use, and a keyed call station at the ground floor entry. Cleared ADA accommodation requirements; landlord covered half the cost under a Fair Housing reasonable accommodation agreement.

Common Questions

Everything Portland Homeowners Actually Ask

Straight answers about cost, installation, and funding — no sales fluff. Browse by topic or call us if you have a question that isn't here.

What does a stairlift actually cost in Cumberland County right now?

Straight rails in standard Portland homes — the Munjoy Hill triple-deckers, the Deering Center colonials, the Woodfords Corner Capes — run $2,800 to $5,500 installed. Curved rails, which you’ll need for West End Victorians with mid-landing turns, run $9,000 to $15,000 because the rail is manufactured to your exact geometry. Outdoor models for raised porches and entry stairs run $4,000 to $7,500. Every quote is written, honored for 30 days, and includes installation, rail, seat, cold-weather battery backup, and the first service visit.

Are prices different in Portland than other Maine cities?

Equipment prices are the same across Maine — we don’t inflate quotes for West End addresses. What varies slightly is install labor for unusual conditions: preserving original banisters in Victorian-era homes, fitting the tight back stairs of Munjoy Hill triple-deckers, and the occasional electrical upgrade in a pre-1920 building that still runs a 60-amp panel. We tell you the line items upfront. No surprise surcharges.

Is a used or refurbished stairlift worth considering in this climate?

For straight staircases, a certified refurbished unit can save 30-40% off a new install — we carry factory-reconditioned straight rails with new upholstery, new batteries, and a 2-year warranty. Critical caveat for Maine: we replace the factory battery with our cold-rated LiFePO4 battery on every refurbished unit. For curved rails, refurbished is almost never an option because the rail is custom-manufactured to a specific staircase. Ask about refurbished inventory during the assessment.

Any hidden fees for homes in Portland's historic districts?

Our quote covers everything: the rail, the seat, installation labor, cold-weather battery backup, and the first service visit. If your home falls within the West End or Munjoy Hill historic districts and you need an exterior-visible outdoor rail, the Certificate of Appropriateness application through Portland’s Historic Preservation Commission adds review time (typically 2–4 weeks) but no extra cost from us — we prepare the submission at no charge. Interior installs in historic districts require no review.

A word from Luis

Most Portland families call after a bad winter—a slip on icy Munjoy Hill steps, a parent who hasn’t come down from the third floor of a triple-decker since Thanksgiving, a daughter calling from Boston worried about her father alone in a West End Victorian with steep original stairs.

My job is simple: get to your house within 24 hours, measure once, and give you a price that’s honored for 30 days. No pressure. No upsells. En español si lo prefiere.
