Straight Stairlift

Bestseller

The workhorse of Pittsburgh's post-war brick neighborhoods — Brookline, Beechview, Greenfield. Roughly 60% of the stairlifts we install in Pittsburgh are straight rails. The rail bolts directly into the stair treads — never into the plaster walls common in 1920s Squirrel Hill Tudors, never into the original Lawrenceville row-house millwork — and every Pittsburgh unit ships with a cold-pack battery rated to -10°F as a baseline spec for the polar-vortex stretches that hit the city every couple of Januaries. Most straight-rail installs wrap in 3 to 4 hours.

Stairlift Service Across Allegheny County

Allegheny County, PA

Pittsburgh's stairlift geography splits between interior stairs and exterior hillside approaches. The South Side Slopes has 40- to 80-step public stair runs climbing from the street to front doors — we mount outdoor hillside rails there that few other installers even quote. Mount Washington's cliff-top homes average 15 to 30 exterior steps with full west-afternoon sun exposure requiring UV-stabilized upholstery. Squirrel Hill's 1920s Tudor Revivals and Shadyside's 1880s Queen Anne Victorians demand curved rails threaded past original oak and walnut banisters. Lawrenceville's narrow steelworker row houses need slim-profile straight rails in 14-foot-wide stairwells. Brookline, Beechview, and Greenfield — post-war brick tracts — handle straight rails in 3 to 4 hours. The Mexican War Streets' Italianate rowhouses carry Pittsburgh History & Landmarks Foundation easements requiring Historic Review Commission approval for exterior work. Every outdoor install ships with drainage channels and cold-pack batteries rated to -10°F for Pittsburgh's 68 annual freeze-thaw days.

Brookline brick Tudor — straight rail on original dark oak treads

Brookline, PA Installed March 2026

A 1948 brick Tudor Revival on Pioneer Avenue in Brookline with 14 dark-stained oak treads on an open-tread staircase. The Feinbergs wanted the rail to disappear against the warm wood tones. We anchored a straight rail directly into the hardwood treads on the right side, matched the rail finish to the original oak stain, and parked the beige seat at the bottom landing. Mrs. Feinberg tested it three times before we finished paperwork. Cold-pack battery bench-tested to -10°F before we left.

Squirrel Hill Tudor Revival — curved rail around a half-wall landing turn

Squirrel Hill, PA Installed February 2026

A 1924 Tudor Revival on Beacon Street with a 90-degree landing turn at the upper floor and an original quarter-sawn oak balustrade the family would not let us touch. We laser-scanned the staircase, fabricated a curved rail that bends around the half-wall at the top landing, and installed in a single afternoon. The brown-upholstered seat parks at the upper hallway so Mrs. Abramowitz steps directly onto the second floor. The chandelier above the landing and the framed family photos stayed exactly where they were.

Lawrenceville row house — compact straight rail next to a wooden sideboard

Lawrenceville, PA Installed January 2026

A 14-foot-wide 1895 brick row house on 42nd Street in Central Lawrenceville with stone-capped treads and a traditional cottage feel. The stair sits next to a wooden sideboard with a potted plant the family refused to move. We mounted a slim-profile straight rail in the compact space, threading past the furniture without shifting anything. The brown-upholstered seat parks at the bottom tread. Mrs. O'Donnell — 82, born in the house — rides from the first floor to her second-floor bedroom every night.

Outdoor

Mount Washington — outdoor porch-entry rail on rough stone paving

Mount Washington, PA Installed December 2025

A 1952 brick bungalow one block off Grandview Avenue with a raised front porch and rough natural stone paving at the entry. Dr. Pellegrino had taken a fall on the stone steps in December 2024. We anchored an outdoor rail into the stone-paved entry with stainless wedge anchors, mounted a weather-resistant cream seat, and sealed every component for Pittsburgh's freeze-thaw cycling. The carpeted outdoor tread at the bottom landing keeps footing secure in wet weather. He rides from the street to his front door in 40 seconds.

Beechview Colonial — straight rail on carpeted stairs with matching upholstery

Beechview, PA Installed November 2025

A 1955 Colonial Revival on Broadway Avenue in Beechview with 13 carpeted treads running from a tiled foyer up to the second-floor landing. The brown wall-to-wall carpet had been there since the 1990s renovation, and the Donaldsons chose a brown-upholstered seat that blends with the carpet tones. The rail anchors through the carpet into the treads beneath. Light switches on the landing wall stayed accessible. Mrs. Donaldson rides from the tiled entry to her upstairs bedroom every evening.

Platform Lift

Highland Park Colonial — indoor wheelchair platform lift for a veteran in a power chair

Highland Park, PA Installed October 2025

A 1912 Colonial Revival near the park entrance where SFC Ferraro uses a power wheelchair full-time after a service-connected spinal injury. A seated stairlift was not an option — he cannot transfer out of the chair. We installed an inclined wheelchair platform lift on the indoor stairway: flat black anti-slip platform with yellow high-visibility safety edges, white safety handrail, and a DC motor rated for the full chair-plus-rider weight. The orange-toned hallway walls and window at the landing stayed untouched. HISA covered the full $6,800.

Common Questions

Everything Pittsburgh Homeowners Actually Ask

Straight answers about cost, installation, and funding — no sales fluff. Browse by topic or call us if you have a question that isn't here.

What does a stairlift actually cost in Pittsburgh right now?

Straight rails in a standard two-story Pittsburgh home — Brookline Tudors, Beechview Colonials, Squirrel Hill colonials with a clean single run — are $2,800 to $5,500 installed. Curved rails for Squirrel Hill Tudor Revivals, Shadyside Victorians, and Highland Park Colonial Revivals with landing turns are $9,000 to $16,000 because the rail is manufactured to your exact stair geometry off a laser scan. Outdoor stoop and porch rails run $4,000 to $7,500. Outdoor hillside rails for South Side Slopes public-step approaches and Mount Washington cliff-top runs are quoted per project — the 58-step Slopes install in our gallery ran $12,400. Every Pittsburgh quote is written, honored for 30 days, and includes rail, seat, cold-pack battery, install labor, and the first service visit.

My Squirrel Hill Tudor has the original 1920s oak banister. Do you have to touch it?

No. Modern stairlifts bolt into the stair treads themselves, not the wall and not the banister. The rail is self-supporting. In Squirrel Hill, Shadyside, Highland Park, and Point Breeze we've installed dozens of lifts in pre-war Pittsburgh homes without touching a single original spindle, newel post, or carved detail. We bring stain samples on the first visit and match the rail finish to your existing 1920s oak or walnut. When the lift eventually comes out, you're left with a handful of small anchor holes in the tread wood — nothing else.

Why does a South Side Slopes hillside rail cost more than a standard indoor Pittsburgh install?

Three factors drive the cost on Slopes and Mount Washington outdoor hillside installs. First, rail length: public-step approaches on Pius, Josephine, and Mission commonly run 40 to 80 steps — three to six times longer than a typical Pittsburgh interior stair. Second, anchor complexity: the rail bolts into century-old brick or concrete step risers with stainless wedge anchors drilled into masonry, requiring a rotary hammer, core sampling, and more labor time than a wood-frame tread. Third, weather engineering: IP54 sealed motor housing, drainage channels on the rail base for Pittsburgh's 68 annual freeze-thaw cycles, UV-stabilized upholstery, and cold-pack batteries rated to -10°F are all spec'd from the start. The 58-step Slopes install in our gallery ran $12,400 total.

Are there lower-cost stairlift options for Pittsburgh homeowners who can't pay out of pocket?

Yes. Certified pre-owned straight-rail units from our refurbished fleet carry a 2-year warranty and typically run $500 to $1,500 below new pricing — same safety spec, same Pittsburgh install. HSA and FSA accounts cover stairlifts as IRS-eligible medical expenses. We offer 12-month same-as-cash financing through approved credit. And for Pittsburgh-area residents 60+ who earn too much for Medicaid, the PA OPTIONS Program (Allegheny County Area Agency on Aging SeniorLine at 412-350-5460) funds home modifications on a sliding-scale income basis — we handle the OPTIONS paperwork at no charge.

A word from Luis

Pittsburgh is the only city I work where the stairs outside the house are a bigger project than the stairs inside it. A South Side Slopes call usually starts with 40 to 60 public steps climbing the hill from the street to the front door — before you've even looked at the interior run. On Mount Washington, the cliff-side houses get a 15 to 30 step outdoor rail with UV-stabilized upholstery because those west-facing skyline views sit in full afternoon sun eight months a year. In Squirrel Hill and Shadyside it's the opposite problem: 1910s Tudor Revivals with original quarter-sawn oak banisters the family will not let anyone touch.

My promise: on-site within 24 hours across Allegheny County and the Mon Valley, a written quote honored for 30 days, PA HIC registration on every contract, cold-pack batteries rated to -10°F on every install, and drainage channels on every outdoor rail so meltwater doesn't ice over the base in January. Hablo español — Brookline, Beechview, and the growing Spanish-speaking families in the South Hills are a real part of my book.

— Luis Ramírez, Pittsburgh
