The 20-square-mile township is crossed by U.S. Route 30 (Lincoln Highway) for about 8.5 miles, with a heavily congested 2.5-mile commercial stretch bordering the city of Lancaster while the remainder of the township stays predominantly rural and agricultural.

Past the Route 30 outlets, East Lampeter's older farmhouses, some near Witmer's Tavern and Bird-in-Hand, have narrower, steeper stairways than anything built new, which is usually what decides straight rail versus custom curved. We fit both, and the first thing we ask a new customer is whether they're on a working farm property; that changes how we route power and get equipment to the house.

What makes East Lampeter different
Why a stairlift installed in East Lampeter, PA is planned around the way this specific community lives, not stamped out from a one-size-fits-all template.
East Lampeter Township contains multiple National Register-listed historic structures, including the Bird-in-Hand Hotel and Witmer's Tavern, and remains home to a large Amish and Mennonite population that maintains traditional farmhouses across the township.

Stairlift Service Across Lancaster County
East Lampeter is a patchwork of historic hamlets along US 30 and PA 340. Smoketown, the village centered on the old airport, has 1950s-70s ranches with manageable 12-foot straight runs. Bird-in-Hand (founded 1734) mixes Amish farmhouse stock with newer lodging — steep stairs, narrow treads, lots of curved-rail jobs. Witmer, Soudersburg, and Zooks Corner are working farms and limestone farmhouses where we often fit curved rails around tight landings. Newer subdivisions like Eastland Hills and Holland Heights follow a 1970s-90s split-level pattern that suits straight rails over a single flight. The 17601/17602 stock is older than most of eastern Pennsylvania — expect 8-inch risers, narrow widths, and original hardwood.

Luis measured our 1810 Witmer farmhouse on a Tuesday and had a custom curved rail fitted around our narrow landing three weeks later. My grandmother is 94 and rides it without assistance. Incredibly patient, clean work, no sawdust left behind.
Straight rail on our Smoketown ranch — 13 feet, in and out in three hours. Luis showed me how to fold the seat out of the way when my Plain community relatives come over. Thoughtful touch, honest price.
Our 1995 Eastland Hills split-level needed a heavy-duty lift — I am 310 pounds. Luis installed the 600-lb model and it handles me with no strain or sag. Quiet enough that my wife sleeps through the night ride.
Outdoor rail from our back porch down to the driveway in Soudersburg. Survived two ice storms and the January freeze-thaw cycle. The IP55-sealed drive has no corrosion and still rides smooth six months in.
Lancaster County VA Clinic at Willow Valley Lakes Drive approved our HISA grant and Luis credited $6,800 toward the curved install in our Bird-in-Hand farmhouse. Walked us through the paperwork at the kitchen table. Treated us with real respect.
Indoor wheelchair platform in our Holland Heights home for my wife's MS. Flat deck, yellow safety edges, rides straight up the foyer stairs. Luis took the time to get the transfer height exactly right. Game changer.

Everything East Lampeter Homeowners Actually Ask
Straight answers about cost, installation, and funding, no sales fluff. Browse by topic or call us if you have a question that isn't here.
What does a stairlift cost for a home in East Lampeter Township?
Depends heavily on which part of the township you're in. Closer to the Route 30 corridor, homes tend to be newer with straight stair runs, which costs less to fit. Farther out on the farm properties, older houses often have a turn or a landing partway up, which means a custom curved rail and a higher price. Either way, the PA Assistive Technology Foundation has a Mini-Loan up to $7,000 at 0% interest, or a Low-Interest Loan above that up to $60,000 total at 3.75%, and there's no income limit to qualify.
Is there a lower-cost option if the need is temporary?
Yes — a rental unit makes more sense than a purchase for a shorter recovery, say after a hip surgery or a fall. It's a fraction of the buy price and it comes back out once the person's steadier on their feet. Most of the East Lampeter households I see going this route are dealing with a straight staircase near the commercial corridor rather than one of the older farmhouse layouts.
How long does a stairlift install take on an older farmhouse?
A straight rail, common in the newer homes near East Town Mall, usually goes in within a few hours. The older farmhouses out toward Bird-in-Hand and Witmer's Tavern more often need a curved rail, and those are custom-built to the exact shape of that specific staircase, so there's a lead time between measuring and installing — it's not an off-the-shelf part.
Can you install on a working farm property outside the Route 30 corridor?
Yes, and it's a routine call for us given how much of East Lampeter stays agricultural once you're off that 2.5-mile commercial strip. The main thing we check first is the power source at the base of the stairs — some of the older farmhouses weren't wired with a lot of extra outlets, so occasionally an electrician needs to add one before the lift goes in.
Does Medicaid cover a stairlift in Lancaster County?
Through the Community HealthChoices (CHC) Waiver, yes — home adaptations, including stairlifts, get authorized case-by-case as part of your individualized service plan through your CHC managed care organization. There's no published flat dollar cap; it's based on what your care coordinator approves. Reach the PA Office of Long-Term Living at 1-800-757-5042, or enroll through the Independent Enrollment Broker at 1-844-824-3655.
What if I don't qualify for Medicaid — is there another state program?
Look at the OPTIONS Program through the Lancaster County Office of Aging. There's no income cutoff, just a sliding co-payment scale based on what you earn, and home safety and accessibility work is a covered service category. Call the county office at 717-299-7979 or 800-801-3070. The Family Caregiver Support Program, run through the same office, can also reimburse a caregiver for home modification costs.
Are there veteran or nonprofit options in East Lampeter?
A service-connected veteran can potentially get a stairlift covered as part of a VA Specially Adapted Housing grant, up to $126,526 for FY2026, or a Special Home Adaptation grant, up to $25,350 — the HISA grant on its own generally won't cover a stair glide. The Disability Empowerment Center, the Center for Independent Living covering Lancaster County, doesn't fund stairlifts directly but can help you sort out which program to apply to first; reach them at 717-394-1890.

I've put lifts in on both sides of this township — old farmhouses tucked back off Route 30 where a family's worked the same land for three or four generations, and newer places closer in toward the mall and the outlets. Get out past that busy commercial stretch and it's a different world: winder staircases, narrow hallways, houses built long before anyone thought about wheelchair clearance. Near Witmer's Tavern and some of the older places by Bird-in-Hand, I'm almost always quoting a curved rail because the stairs just don't run straight. First thing I ask a new East Lampeter customer is whether they're on a working farm property, because that changes where the electrical runs and how we get equipment to the house.
Ready to get started? It's simple.
East Lampeter homeowners often stay in one farmhouse or split-level for 30+ years. A stairlift is the single cheapest way to keep those stairs usable after a knee replacement, a stroke, or simply an 80th birthday — $3,000 to $13,000 against the alternative of selling a family property.
We install in East Lampeter three to four days a week out of our Lancaster truck. Call Luis direct — same-week measurement, 3-4 hour install for straight rails, 10-14 day fabrication for curved.
