Stairlift Service Across Polk County

Polk County, IA

Sherman Hill’s 1870s–1900s Victorians between 15th and 19th Streets have steep stairwells and deep landing turns that require curved rails — the Sherman Hill Association reviews exterior modifications on contributing structures. Beaverdale’s 1920s–1940s bungalows run straight: 13–14 carpeted treads, tight newel post at the bottom, standard slim-profile install. Drake and Capitol Hill duplexes need compact-profile rails for shared stairwells. South of Grand foursquares and Arts and Crafts homes have wider stairs with landing turns. Merle Hay and Waterbury bring 1950s–1960s ranch and split-level layouts — lower ceilings and fast installs. We staff dedicated specialists for Urbandale, West Des Moines, Ankeny, Johnston, and Norwalk.

1918 South of Grand foursquare — straight rail on quarter-sawn oak treads, matched finish

South of Grand, IA Installed December 2025

A 1918 foursquare in the South of Grand district with original quarter-sawn oak treads and craftsman-era woodwork that the family had spent 20 years preserving. Mrs. Nakamura was clear the lift could not make the house look like a care facility. We brought color samples to the first visit, matched the rail finish to the existing oak, and bolted the track into the treads only — wall, banister, and plaster untouched. The cold-weather LiFePO4 battery is the Iowa default. Mrs. Nakamura’s book club met two weeks later — four women sat on the stairs for 20 minutes without mentioning the lift.

1889 Sherman Hill Victorian — curved rail past a 90-degree turn at the upper landing

Sherman Hill, IA Installed February 2026

An 1889 Queen Anne in Sherman Hill with an original oak banister, a carved walnut newel post, and a 90° turn at the upper landing. The Lindquists moved here in 1978 and had been told by a national chain that the banister would need to be cut. We digitally scanned the staircase, fabricated a curved rail that threads past every spindle and around the newel post without touching either, and bolted the track into the existing treads only. Mr. Lindquist’s first ride was the first time he’d been to the second floor since October. The seat parks at the upper hallway — he steps off onto the landing floor, not the top tread.

1940s Waterbury cottage — straight rail on original stone-tile treads in a compact stairwell

Waterbury, IA Installed October 2025

A 1940s cottage in the Waterbury neighborhood with narrow stone-capped treads, a wooden sideboard crowding the bottom landing, and a stairwell barely 30 inches wide. Mrs. Olson had lived here since 1969 and the house felt smaller every year — but she wasn’t leaving. We specified the slim-profile rail that parks flush against the wall, folding seat and footrest tucked flat beside her sideboard and potted fern. The track bolted into the stone treads with masonry anchors, no wall contact. Compact space, traditional home, three-hour install, and she was upstairs by lunch.

Capitol Hill raised porch — outdoor lift on stone-paved entry with de-icing rail coating

Capitol Hill, IA Installed October 2025

A raised front porch on Capitol Hill with seven exterior stone-paved steps that become an ice sheet from November through March. Mr. Morales is a veteran who qualified for a $6,800 HISA grant through the VA Central Iowa Health Care System at 3600 30th Street. The cream-colored weather-sealed seat sits at the porch entry, mounted on a de-icing epoxy-coated rail with stainless fasteners rated for road-salt exposure. The IP55-sealed motor housing and cold-weather battery rated to -20°F carried him through the entire 2025–2026 winter without a single service call. Luis conducted the entire assessment in Spanish at the family’s request.

Drake duplex — slim-profile rail on carpeted treads in a shared stairwell

Drake, IA Installed September 2025

A 1925 duplex in the Drake neighborhood with a shared stairwell and 14 carpeted treads. Mrs. Henderson owns the building and lives upstairs; her long-term tenant occupies the ground floor. The carpet runs wall to wall on every tread — the seat upholstery in warm brown tones blends with the carpet color so naturally that the downstairs tenant walked past it three times before noticing. The rail bolts through the carpet into the subfloor, folding seat and footrest tuck flat at the bottom landing near the tiled entryway. The cold-weather battery with 72-hour backup ran through the derecho anniversary storm without a hiccup.

Platform Lift

Merle Hay split-level — indoor wheelchair platform lift for a veteran who cannot transfer

Merle Hay, IA Installed January 2026

A 1958 ranch in the Merle Hay corridor where Mr. Washington, a wheelchair user since a spinal injury in 2019, had been confined to the main floor for over six years. A seated stairlift was not an option — he cannot transfer out of the chair. We installed an inclined wheelchair platform lift on the indoor stairway between the entry and the sunken den: a flat black anti-slip platform with high-visibility yellow safety edges, white safety handrails on both sides, and a gate that locks automatically during travel. The orange-toned walls and natural window light make the installation blend with the home’s midcentury character. His grandchildren barrel past the folded platform on their way to movie night.

Common Questions

Everything Des Moines Homeowners Actually Ask

Straight answers about cost, installation, and funding — no sales fluff. Browse by topic or call us if you have a question that isn't here.

What does a stairlift actually cost in Des Moines right now?

Straight rails in standard Des Moines homes — the Beaverdale bungalows, the Merle Hay ranches, the Drake two-stories — run $2,800 to $5,500 installed. Curved rails, which you’ll need for most Sherman Hill Victorians with landing turns and South of Grand foursquares with deep mid-landings, run $9,000 to $15,000 because the rail is manufactured to your exact staircase geometry. Outdoor weather-sealed models for raised porches and exterior steps run $4,000 to $7,500. Every quote is written, honored for 30 days, and includes installation, rail, seat, cold-weather battery backup with 72-hour extended capacity, and the first service visit.

Are prices different in Des Moines than in other Iowa cities?

Equipment prices are the same across Iowa — we don’t inflate quotes for South of Grand addresses or discount for Highland Park. What varies slightly is install labor for unusual conditions: preserving original woodwork in Sherman Hill Victorians, threading curved rails through 1920s bungalow landings, and the cold-weather battery and 72-hour backup upgrades that are standard on every central Iowa install. We tell you the line items upfront. No surprise surcharges.

Do you charge extra for Spanish-language service?

No. Every Des Moines assessment can be conducted in Spanish at your request — Luis is bilingual and has walked dozens of central Iowa families through every line of the paperwork in their preferred language. Every printed quote, consent form, and operating manual is also available in Spanish. Zero surcharge.

Does the cold-weather battery upgrade cost extra?

No — the LiFePO4 battery certified to -20°F and the 72-hour extended backup capacity are standard on every central Iowa install, included in the quoted price. Iowa families have lived through three multi-day outages in the past five years — the 2020 derecho, the 2019 polar vortex, and severe thunderstorm events that knock out residential power for days. A standard lithium battery that quits at 15°F is not an option in this market.

A word from Luis

Most Des Moines families call me after a winter that proved the stairs are no longer safe — a parent who slipped on the carpeted treads in a Beaverdale bungalow during a polar vortex power outage, a father who hasn’t been upstairs since his knee surgery at Iowa Methodist, a daughter in Chicago worried about her mother alone in a Sherman Hill Victorian with temperatures at -15°F outside.

My job is simple: get to your house within 24 hours, measure once, and give you a price that’s honored for 30 days. No pressure. No upsells. En español si lo prefiere.
