About Washington County

County-wide stairlift service from Machias to the Bay of Fundy coast

Washington County is Maine's easternmost county — the Sunrise County — spread along a deeply indented Atlantic and Bay of Fundy shoreline from the blueberry barrens around Cherryfield out to the headlands of Lubec and Eastport. The county seat is Machias, home to the courthouse and the University of Maine at Machias. Salt air, hard nor'easters and long winters are tough on older coastal homes, and many here are two-story farmhouses and capes with steep stairs. A single county-wide installer means rural Down East families don't have to wait on a crew from Bangor.

We carry stairlifts to every town on the map, from the Passamaquoddy communities at Pleasant Point and Indian Township to the fishing harbors of Jonesport and Cutler. There are no travel fees for our remote-rural addresses. We work with seniors aging in place and with veterans, and we treat each home — coastal, inland or tribal trust land — the same.

Frequently Asked

Washington County stairlift questions answered

Straight answers from a crew that installs across Washington County every week.

How much does a stairlift cost in Washington County?
A new straight stairlift starts at $2,800 installed. A curved lift, custom-built for homes with turns or landings, runs about $9,000. An outdoor lift for porches and dock steps is around $4,000, and a heavy-duty model is about $5,050. The quote covers the lift, the rail cut to your staircase, and full installation — there are no county-wide travel fees, even for the most remote Down East addresses. Financing is available from $79 per month.
Do you really serve the small towns, not just Machias and Calais?
Yes. We install across all of Washington County — from Eastport, Lubec and the Passamaquoddy communities at Pleasant Point and Indian Township to inland towns like Topsfield, Danforth and Alexander on the Airline. Coastal harbor, blueberry-barren farmhouse or lakeside camp, we come to you. No address in the county is too far, and there is no extra charge for distance.
What funding helps pay for a stairlift here?
Several programs apply. MaineCare's Section 19 HCBS waiver can cover home modifications including stairlifts for members at nursing-facility level of care. Veterans may qualify for the VA HISA grant of up to $6,800 through the Machias field office. The USDA Section 504 program offers up to a $10,000 grant for income-qualified homeowners 62 and older — and nearly all of Washington County counts as rural. The Eastern Area Agency on Aging can help you find the right fit before you buy.
Is there a travel fee for rural or island addresses?
No. We charge flat county-wide coverage with no travel fees, whether you're on the mainland in Cherryfield or out on Beals Island across Moosabec Reach. Down East distances are real, but they don't change your price. The quote you get is the price you pay.
How fast can you install, and do lifts hold up to coastal weather?
Most straight stairlifts are installed within 48 hours of your assessment. Curved lifts are built to your staircase and take a little longer. For homes along the Atlantic and Bay of Fundy, our outdoor lifts are sealed and weather-rated to handle salt air, fog and nor'easters, with covers to protect them between uses.
How do we get started?
Call (800) 965-0350 to book a free in-home assessment anywhere in Washington County. A specialist measures your staircase, talks through straight, curved or outdoor options, and gives you a firm quote with no obligation. If a stairlift is right for your home, most straight installs are done within about two days.
