The community covers 21.15 square miles of entirely dry land in northern Citrus County at 98 feet elevation, with the 46-mile Withlacoochee State Trail and former phosphate-mine land (now the El Diablo golf course) running through it.
Source ↗Expert Stairlift Installation in Citrus Springs, FL
Citrus Springs was platted by the Mackle Brothers as a single planned subdivision of more than 34,000 homesites, laid out across a wide grid of streets built for single-family ranch homes rather than city blocks. With 86.3% of residents owning their homes and 22.2% already 65 or older, a lot of these houses were bought to retire in, not to flip in five years. When the stairs become the reason someone starts avoiding the second floor, a stairlift is usually the smaller move compared to leaving a paid-off house behind.

The kinds of staircases and installs we see across Citrus Springs's older and newer homes alike. Drag to scroll, or use the arrows and dots below.
We live in one of the original Mackle Brothers homes off North Citrus Springs Boulevard. The stairs to the bonus room are steep and narrow. Two other companies said it would not work. All American measured, installed a slim-profile rail in three hours, and my wife rides it every morning. The seat folds flat and the grandkids walk right past it on the way to the guest room.
I served 24 years in the Navy and both knees are bone on bone. The Lecanto VA Clinic at 2804 West Marc Knighton Court wrote the HISA prescription and All American prefilled every form. The grant covered $6,800 and I was riding the lift four weeks after my first call. No runaround, no paperwork maze.
Our two-story near the old El Diablo course has a staircase with a 90-degree turn at the upper landing. Two companies wanted two separate straight lifts. All American scanned the whole run and fabricated one curved rail. My husband rides from the foyer to the master bedroom without stopping. Five months now with zero issues.
Dad is 91 and stubborn about staying in the house he built in 1987. The split-level entry has five steps he was scooting down on his backside every morning to get the mail. Luis measured on Wednesday, crew installed Thursday, and Dad walked to the mailbox standing up on Friday. He calls it his elevator.
Hurricane season knocked out power for 36 hours last September. The battery backup kept the lift running the entire time. My mother never missed a trip between floors. That alone was worth every dollar. We had a generator for the fridge but the lift did not even need it.
I use a power wheelchair full-time after a spinal cord injury. A regular stairlift was not an option. All American installed a platform lift along the indoor stairway with yellow safety edges and a keyed lockout. The HISA grant and SMMC-LTC waiver together covered the full cost. I roll between floors without leaving my chair.

From the original Mackle Brothers subdivision lots along North Citrus Springs Boulevard and West Citrus Springs Boulevard — concrete-block ranches and split-levels on half-acre wooded parcels platted in 1969 — to the newer builds along North Lecanto Highway near the Withlacoochee State Trail, our crew has measured staircases on every street in the grid. Homes along North Elkcam Boulevard (Mackle spelled backwards) and West Hampshire Boulevard tend toward single-story ranch plans with interior stairs to converted bonus rooms. The streets near the former El Diablo Golf Course on North Sherman Drive feature larger two-story stucco homes with curved-rail-friendly geometry. Parcels along West Citrus Hills Boulevard bordering Pine Ridge often have split-level entries with four to six steps.

Everything Citrus Springs Homeowners Actually Ask
Straight answers about cost, installation, and funding, no sales fluff. Browse by topic or call us if you have a question that isn't here.
How much does a stairlift typically cost for a home in Citrus Springs?
Because the original Mackle Brothers plat put most of Citrus Springs into single-story ranch homes with a short, straight interior stairway — where there's an interior stairway at all — a good share of the quotes I write here are for straight-rail units, the least expensive configuration. Two-story homes with a landing partway up need a curved rail custom-bent to that turn, which costs more and takes longer to fabricate. I won't give you a real number without measuring the actual stairs first.
With 86.3% homeownership here, does that change what people expect to pay?
It changes how people think about it more than what they actually pay. Most of Citrus Springs is owner-occupied, often by people in their retirement home rather than a starter property, so the cost of a stairlift tends to get weighed against the cost of moving or the cost of a fall, not against a landlord's budget. The affordability band here runs mid-range for this kind of work, and the FAAST New Horizon Loan Program — roughly $3,000 to $30,000, low-interest — is the option I mention most to people who'd rather spread the cost out than pay in full up front.
How long does installation take on a typical Citrus Springs ranch?
A straight rail on one flight — the layout you'll find in most of the original 34,000-homesite subdivision — is usually finished in a few hours, same day. If your home has a landing or a turn instead, plan on a longer timeline, because that section of rail has to be custom-bent to your staircase before it ever reaches the house.
Does the flat, dry terrain out here make installation any easier?
The lot itself doesn't really factor in. Citrus Springs sits at 98 feet of elevation on entirely dry land, so it doesn't have the drainage or grading headaches some Florida sites do — but that's a site-prep question, not a stairlift one. What actually matters is the staircase inside: its width, whether there's a landing, and what it's anchored to. We check that in person before we quote anything.
Does Florida Medicaid cover a stairlift for someone in Citrus Springs?
Through the Statewide Medicaid Managed Care Long-Term Care (SMMC LTC) program, a stairlift can be approved as a home accessibility adaptation under an approved plan of care — there's no fixed dollar cap, but it isn't automatic, since AHCA's own consumer materials don't name stairlifts by name. Call 1-800-963-5337 and ask your care coordinator directly whether a stairlift fits your plan of care.
What about VA benefits — will HISA pay for the lift itself?
Not for the unit. The VA's Home Improvements and Structural Alterations (HISA) grant — up to $6,800 for a service-connected condition, $2,000 if not — explicitly excludes stair glides and stairlifts as "removable equipment." A stairlift prescribed through VA Prosthetics is the path that actually covers the equipment, and it has no set dollar ceiling; it's approved against medical need instead. Either way, start with 1-800-827-1000.
Is there local help in Citrus County beyond Medicaid and the VA?
Elder Options, the Area Agency on Aging for the North Central Florida region, has a location in Lecanto that serves Citrus County residents directly — reach them at 1-800-262-2243. They're a referral and case-management agency rather than a direct funder, so their real value is pointing you toward whichever program actually fits: Medicaid, VA, a loan like FAAST, or Florida's Homestead and Senior Additional Homestead Exemption, which won't hand you cash but can shrink your taxable home value by up to $100,000 combined and free up money for the project instead.

Most of the houses I get called to out here are single-story ranches from that original Mackle Brothers plat, and that's good news for install day — a straight interior run with no landing is about the simplest rail there is to fit. What catches new clients off guard is how spread out Citrus Springs actually is: 21 square miles of subdivision streets, with the Withlacoochee State Trail cutting through on one side and the old phosphate-mine land, now the El Diablo golf course, on the other. I tell people here the same thing I'd tell my own parents — don't wait for a stumble on those front steps before you make the call.
