Where to Donate a Used Stairlift (Tax Deduction Guide)

Your stairlift served its purpose. Maybe the rider has passed, the family has moved to a single-story home, or a remodel made the lift unnecessary. The unit still works. Throwing it away feels wrong -- and it is wrong, because a functioning stairlift has genuine value to someone who cannot afford one new.

Here is how to donate it, who to call, and what tax benefit you can claim.

Organizations That Accept Used Stairlifts

Most ReStores offer free pickup for large items. Donations are tax-deductible (501c3). Call your local ReStore to confirm they accept stairlifts -- policies vary by location.

Equipment is loaned at no cost to ALS patients. ALS is progressive -- donated stairlifts go to families who need them urgently and often cannot afford them.

Programs in every state. Some affiliates accept stairlift donations through assistive technology programs. Contact your local affiliate.

Many AAAs maintain waiting lists of seniors who need stairlifts but cannot afford them. Find yours through the Eldercare Locator at 1-800-677-1116.

No formal equipment programs, but they have networks of people who need help. A call may connect your stairlift to a veteran or senior on a fixed income within your own community.

What Condition the Stairlift Needs to Be In

  • Powers on, rides full length, stops cleanly at both ends
  • All safety sensors function (seat-present, footrest, emergency stop)
  • Battery holds charge for at least 8-10 full cycles
  • Seat swivels, folds, and locks as designed
  • Rail is straight (not bent, cracked, or corroded)
  • Name-brand model (Bruno, Handicare, Stannah, Acorn, Harmar) with parts availability
Typically Not Acceptable

Units over 15 years old, generic imports with no US parts pipeline, batteries dead for 6+ months (sulfation = unrecoverable), custom curved rails (cannot be reused), or visible structural damage. A donated stairlift that does not work is a disposal problem, not a gift.

The Tax Deduction: How It Works

Donating to a 501(c)(3) is deductible at fair market value. You determine the value, not the charity. Over $5,000 requires independent appraisal.

Acorn 130$500-$800$175-$400$200-$500
"At a 22% marginal tax rate, a Bruno Elite valued at $1,500 saves you $330. At 32%, it saves $480. Keep the original purchase invoice, donation receipt, photos, and any appraisal documentation."

Option 2: You Hire Removal

Under 5 years old: selling typically nets more than the deduction. 5-10 years: donation often makes more sense. Over 10 years: resale value is minimal, donate to an org with a refurbishment program.

Frequently Asked Questions

Many do, but acceptance varies by location. Call before arranging. They typically offer free pickup and will not assign a dollar value -- that is your responsibility for the tax deduction.

The motor, seat, and carriage can potentially be reused. The rail itself cannot -- it is custom-fabricated to your specific staircase and will not fit any other home. Some organizations accept non-rail components.

Three options: the charity arranges it (often free), you hire an installer ($200-$500), or we remove it free when you purchase a replacement unit from us. Cannot be removed by homeowner alone -- combined weight is 150-250 lb.
